About Ms Cheetah

DIY Beauty

November 8th, 2010 @ 6:25 pm by Ms Cheetah

I’m a Do It Yourself type of woman. And while I can swing a hammer and handle a glue gun, I’m talking about DIY Beauty. I prefer to be in control of my own makeup, manicures, eyebrows, etc.—everything except my hair, which I gladly leave up to the professionals. Since Mr. Cheetah and I got engaged and decided to have a wedding, there has been a constant debate going on in my head: DIY makeup or Pro Makeup Artist?

Normally I do my own makeup for formal events, but I’m not sure if I want to go the DIY makeup route for our wedding. Here I am in Bridesmaid Mrs. P’s wedding earlier this year, where I had my hair done but did my make up myself:

Doesn’t the bride look gorgeous? I adore her veil and vintage dress! Her makeup was professionally done, but it still looked natural.

I think I do a decent job with my makeup, but I don’t know if I apply the most photogenic or longest lasting looks.

Another concern is timing: if I’m doing my own makeup, I can see easily getting distracted/running late and not leaving enough time for makeup. Whereas if I hire a makeup artist (MUA), there will be a set time and place designated for makeup (which I know I could plan even if I went DIY, but it’s easy to overlook time when it’s all up to you). Plus I imagine my nerves will be all over the place on the wedding day, so it may make sense to trust someone else’s hand when it comes to my makeup—especially since I’ll likely want false lashes and I have not yet mastered the skill of applying them.

Yet, I’m still not sold on hiring a MUA…I have only had my makeup professionally done a few times; a couple of times it was fine and once it was a hot, hot mess (think 65-year old Caribbean Lady of the Night with a partial fake tan circa 1970. I wish I was kidding.). Even when the pro makeup looked fine I didn’t like it any better than how I do it myself.

Last week we had our engagement photos and at the last minute I decided I needed to try a professional MUA so I could get an idea about what pro makeup would look like in photos. I made an appointment at Makeup Mandy here in LA (and it was 20% off, bonus!). While this wasn’t a really a trial-run since the wedding is in Palm Springs, I thought it could help with my makeup decision.

Here is what I looked like at the end of the night, about 7 or 8 hours later (the lipstick is way gone):

The makeup didn’t feel heavy and that the foundation she used was very light. The lipstick is gone, but it was a soft pink/berry. I loved the dramatic false eyelashes (which are still on 3 days later), but my concern was the eyeliner. I thought it might be too much. Mr. Cheetah approved, but I am waiting until we get our e-pics back before I make my final judgment.

I’m having a real makeup trial in Palm Springs in a couple weeks which will hopefully help me finalize my wedding makeup decision. I just don’t want to end up looking like an Island Floozy again. Side note: doesn’t Island Floozy sound like a delicious frozen drink that should be served in a coconut?

Will you (or did you) do your own wedding makeup, or did you hire a pro?

O.k., first of all, your cheekbones are to die for.

Secondly, I think you could go either way! Your makeup looks awesome from the makeup artist, but you did an awesome job yourself from that other wedding picture!

I’m going to be doing my own, but I realized from my engagement pictures that I need to apply much more makeup than I thought in order for it to show up in pictures.

Love the side-swept bangs and lashes/shadow. Very sassy.

I’m calling in the pros! For our e-shoot at the end of October, I tried fake eyelashes. Kept them on for two days; wish I could wear them ALL the time. The make-up looked great but the foundation didn’t stay as well as my everyday MAC.

This is my biggeest concern right now, which makes no sense b/c I am a year and a half out. Ha! The professional makeup you got done looks great! As heavy as the eyeliner might seem in “real life” it will look less harsh in photos (I mean unless things got REAL crazy). I would say go for the professional makeup the day of your wedding. One less thing you have to stress over. I’m pretty sure I will go with a professional even though I HATE HATE HATE people touching my face.

Def keep the eyeliner - you’ll need it so your eyes don’t get lost in the pics! Esp since they’ll be open in all the pics. The camera dissolves the makeup!

I was tempted, but if you think about how much you’re blowing on pictures +/- video, it just makes sense to look your absolute best: falsies, full on flawless skin (airbrush even, if that’s what it takes), contouring (even with amazing cheekbones like yours); etc. Just got my pictures and video back and am so glad I went all out :D

I’m still torn… I also have the problem of a lot of makeup makes me itchy, and the stuff that doesn’t is the mineral makeup that some people say doesn’t photograph well. I also don’t know how to find a makeup artist that would only work with the mineral stuff.
Then I hear awesome stuff about the MAC counter, and wonder if I should bite the bullet and try there.

You look great! I’d say if you plan on doing the eyelashes get a MUA, those things are hard to get on right! I was planning on doing my make-up myself but since I can’t apply those eyelashes I will probably hire a MUA or enlist help from bridesmaids to save money. Either way you will look gorgeous!

I’m hiring a pro! When I do my own makeup, by the end of the day it doesn’t look like I’m wearing any!

Lucky for me, my SIL is great at make-up. All I did was go to a make-up counter to get the right colors and she did the rest. I DIYd my hair because all the beauty shops were closed on Sundays (and I’m pretty sure the fired-from-our-wedding Venue Coordinator called and told them not to work with me). It was disastrous. I’d say do what you feel comfortable doing and get someone else to do the rest.

I will probably do my on makeup but I did theater in both high school and college and we were responsible for our own makeup. I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of what I need to look good in pictures and still look okay in person. I do think I’m buying new makeup for the wedding though. I use mineral makeup and am worried that it just won’t be enough.

I do my make-up on a daily basis and also do it when I got to special events. I feel as though I do a great job, however, when I got married I wanted to be 100% sure it would stay and also understood that a professional would know better as to what would be more photogenic. So I hired someone.

Even if you think you can do it, like I did, there’s nothing better than being pampered on that day. I didn’t have this amazing support system to wait on me hand and foot that morning. In my world I’m always the Mom (even to my own motehr) so although it only took 20 minutes…it was sooooooo nice to get taken care of!

I love the fake eye lashes on you too!
I’m going with a pro too. I am using MAC and had my first make-up trial last night. They do amazing work!
Go for it!

Your makeup looks amazing. I love the natural look, yet slight drama with the lashes and liner. I say go for a pro artist, just make sure you love the trial look.
And… could you tell me how your trial in Palm Springs goes? I am getting married in PS also and will be looking for a mu artist as well!

Thanks for your advice everyone, I think I might be leaning towards a pro now.

@Miss Hippo: Thanks so much, Hippo!

@MsChaCha: Of course! I’ll likely blog about it, but please feel free to PM me with any other questions about PS vendors or anything. I’m so excited to see another Palm Springs bride in the hive!

I’ll have an Island Floozy…it sounds delicious! Seriously though, I went for a MUA. I can’t do makeup worth a damn, let alone makeup that has to last the whole day/night. My girl did an amazing job and everything stayed in place all day. Worth the money 100 times over.

I Think your eye liner looks very nice. You gotta remember pictures tend to make you make up seem very light so going a little heavier isn’t a bad idea. I to am toying with diy make up after a few frustrating trials. Good luck to you
