Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).
About Mrs. Hippo

After spending way too long on our STDs, I decided I needed to start early on our invitations. I won’t be mailing them until January, but doing a little bit at a time has helped me not mentally freak out about it. Now, I know there are a ton of bees with crafting contraptions like the Cricut, Gocco, Yudu, Cuttlebug…I’m sure the list goes on and on. I own none of these, and to be honest with you, I’m not 100% sure what these machines do, and frankly, I don’t think I want to know. If I did know, I’m sure I would have to have one or more of them, so it’s best for me to just stay in the dark. However, during a recent trip to Michaels for yet another double-sided tape dispenser thingy, I came across this lovely lady in the adhesive aisle and figured it was worth a shot.

My Xyron 5″ Creative Station

Oh yes, I am the proud owner of a Xyron Creative Station. For those of you who are as clueless about crafting contraptions as I was am, the Xyron Creative Station basically turns anything into a sticker. This is huge, particularly when it comes to assembling layered invitations like the ones we’re working on. So here’s how it works…

You insert whatever you want to have an adhesive back into the machine and crank the handle.

The paper goes through the machine, and comes out wrapped in plastic, like so….

Then you remove the clear plastic top and remove the paper from the backing. Your paper is sticky. Super sticky. Like a sticker, sticky.

For real, it is that simple. The Xyron Creative Station comes in several widths, but I went with the 5″ since it would fit the width of the backing for our pocketfold invitations perfectly. At $50, I wasn’t sure if it was worth it, but with a 50% off Michaels coupon, my perspective totally changed! Now, the adhesive refills aren’t cheap, but neither are those regular, smaller Xyron adhesive roller thingies, so for me the convenience and speed was totally worth the price.

What crafting contraptions have made your life easier?

I wanted to get one of those but I already got a Cricut so FI would not approve the extra expense :( But I think that would been the better choice than the cricut. I spent forever cutting tape to tape each piece of my invite.

That’s awesome! I only have the small one, but I noticed if you get the refills at Walmart, they’re way cheaper! I’m not sure if they sell the size you bought, but the small refills go for $13.00 at my local AC Moore, and $5.00 at Walmart! Definitely worth a look :)

I love my Xyron–it made the wrap labels happen on my STDs. I used the 50% off coupons to buy it, and then proceeded to buy the refills every time I got a 40% off coupon. So it wasn’t that bad at all!

Ms. Hippo!! You are my new best friend because I am so borrowing that when you are done with it. Now, if only you could go buy a cricut, then we will be BFF’s for life :)

Finally! A bee who is afraid of all those machines as I am! I don’t even know what I would do with them if I had one, but this sticker maker contraption looks very enticing. . . .

We got one of those! I used it for most of my mock ups, but ended up going with 3m spray adhesive for the invites because like you said those refills aren’t cheap. I will probably break it back out for the wrap around labels and belly bands!

Um, WHOA. Did not know that’s what a Xyron did, that totally would’ve made my life a hell of a lot easier during my planning, dangit!

I love my Xyron 510, too! Unfortunately, I got so spoiled by it that when we decided to go with 6″ square Save the Dates, I absolutely had to buy the 900, too. I’ll probably end up with the 250 at some point, too. IT’S SO ADDICTING.

I used to have one of those back in the day, but got rid of it. I am kicking myself now, but I can’t rationalize buying another one.
