Invitation Excitation, Part I

November 10th, 2010 @ 2:19 pm by Ms. Sloth

So the save the dates are printed and once I buy some stamps, they’ll be out the door. The next step is the invitations themselves.

And, you guys? I couldn’t be more stoked about them.

Months and months ago, I entered a contest with A Printable Press, where people could submit a new invitation idea. The person with the winning idea won a free invitation design. The idea I’d submitted was an invitation that looked like an old-timey band poster. Or gig poster. Or hatch poster. Or whatever you want to call it. At any rate, I was inspired by images like these:

Photos: 1, 2, 3, 4

And guess what? I won! And A Printable Press used my idea for a design.

When they revealed the design, it was beyond my wildest dreams. Simply amazeballs:

Obviously, these are not our names and details. This is just a mock-up. But they’re going to personalize the invites with our info and even our colors!

I’m so thrilled with the way they turned out. Before I won the contest, I was all ready to design the invites myself. But there’s no way they’d have turned out half as awesome as these. And since they were based on my idea, the invites still feel personal and special to me. I love that they’re unique, bold, colorful, and quirky.

But this is only the beginning. After the design is finalized, we need to print these suckers and send ’em out!

How did you select your wedding invitations? Did you want something traditional, or something more offbeat?

Those rock!!! Congratulations! :D

I don’t know what mine will look like yet, but I’m excited anyway. A dear friend who just got her MFA in printmaking offered to design and print them as a wedding gift! I’ve always loved her style, so I know they’re going to be amazing.

I really feel lucky, because we just didn’t have room for nice paper products in our budget. I was going to go with something fairly low-end that still cost more than $100, but instead I’m going to get something unique and beautiful for just the cost of supplies!

I swear - between the friend designing/making my dress, the one doing the invites, another one who just offered to make my jewelry, the one who is making us some hand-thrown pottery dishes, and the family friend who’s doing our photography, I feel like I won the friend lottery.

We went with something totally offbeat…bright yellow and dark purple with a birds on a wire theme. We also were inspired by old concert posters, and modeled the design after that. We designed them ourselves, and our printer (an old friend) charged us $60 for 150 invitations plus 150 rsvp cards on heavy cream-colored cardstock, pre-cut. The envelopes cost us $82 shipped, so our final per invation cost was less than $1…and they came out so great, and much more expensive looking!

Those are amazing!! We have been talking to a concert poster designer in Portland but think he might be out of our price range for invites. These would be fabulous to use (our ceremony is at a small music venue). Congrats on your winning design. They are beautiful.
