Invitation Anatomy: The Heart

November 11th, 2010 @ 4:44 pm by Ms. Stripes

Sure, it may have taken me a few months post-wedding, but I finally made myself sit down and write this post so I could share the last (and my favorite!) installment of our invitation saga: The Heart. It’s been a while though, so I understand if you need a quick refresher! Go check out the skin, bones, and guts of our glorious invites and then come right back, mkay?

I’m a big fan of printmaking and I specifically chose to create a lino print because it’s easy and cheap to do at home. I’m really happy with the way they turned out, and I absolutely love that we were able to include an original piece of artwork with our invitations.

Here’s what I did:

Fun Fact: I used my brooch bouquet as the inspiration for the individual flowers that make up the heart.

Transfer your image onto a linoleum block using pencil, carbon paper, or a blender pen.

Invitation Anatomy: The Heart : wedding crafts diy invitations los angeles stationery tutorial 5 5

Carve away the light grey linoleum. This is best done in multiple sessions, as your hand will get tired and/or shaky.

Invitation Anatomy: The Heart : wedding crafts diy invitations los angeles stationery tutorial 6 6

Tear your paper with a tear bar in order to show off its fantastic deckle. I tore 5 3/4 x 5 3/4 squares.

Line ‘em up and let ‘em dry! Oil based relief inks can take a few weeks to dry, so start early!

Make sure you save a few to frame and hang—it’s super fun to see wedding reminders around the house!

Any other print makers out there? What are you printing for your wedding?

@Mrs. French Bulldog: You should totally come over for a printing party Frenchie!
@Heidi: Yup, like Historienne said, you can totally pull lino prints by hand- no press required! I used a bamboo baren (like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.html/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/192-5255505-5358362?a=B0018A66SQ) and some elbow grease!
Thanks all! Glad to see everyone likes the print- probably going to do a much simpler one for our thank you cards!

Printmaking for invites - I love that you did this!

I would do this in a heartbeat but don’t have access to presses. Wondering if it’s sane to attempt DIY silkscreening for the paper suite…
