Project Self Improvement

November 11th, 2010 @ 11:07 am by Mrs. Meerkat

I am using our wedding as the motivation to do a little Meerkat self improvement.

I told you about how I learned to put on makeup (which I wrote about here and here). I did a little hair therapy to bring my hair back to its normally healthy self. I also started dieting and exercising, which, by the way, is going fabulously!

But for my biggest (and longest) self improvement project, I had to get some professional help:

Yep, I got me a set of braces. I knew from an early age that my teeth were too large for my jaw size and I would need braces. No matter how many times the dentist told my parents I needed braces, I refused to get them. There was no medical reason to have them done (just cosmetic reasons) and even as a kid I knew I wouldn’t feel right letting my family pay that much for something as superficial as a straight smile (read: no dental insurance).

Fast forward to a couple years ago when we got engaged.

I had pretty good insurance through work and the crowding of my teeth had become much worse with four impacted wisdom teeth, so I set up a consultation to see an orthodontist. BEST. DECISION. EVER.

Now, I am not going to lie and say that braces as an adult were all fun and games. But you know what? It wasn’t really all that bad. First I ended up having to have two oral surgeries to remove my wisdom teeth and four other teeth to make room in my mouth. In all honesty, the oral surgeries were a piece of cake. I never took a single painkiller except Tylenol.

Next I had the braces put on my teeth. This was the easiest part of the whole process. Every couple weeks they would replace the wire with a different size to “twist” any teeth that were currently twisted the wrong way. After that, they put these nifty rubber band chain things on to close any gaps (like where they removed teeth from) and also to pull in my overbite.

And that’s it! Really, it was that simple. It took 1.5 years and was worth every second. Did it ever hurt? Kind-of. The little pain I did have happened for about 24 hours after each appointment where they did an adjustment. My gums/teeth would be a bit sore but a couple Advil or Motrin took care of it.

Want to see the final result?

All the time and money was completely worth it to have a carefree smile on my wedding day.

Are there any other hive members that have had braces as adults? How was your experience?

I did invisalign but it was really hard for me to wear all the time, especially at work. My teeth were definitely straighter for our wedding though but now they have gone back - I plan to get braces in a few years because Im really self conscious of my buck teeth!

I have a small gap between my two front teeth, but my dentist never told me to get braces because he thought the rest of my teeth would push them together.. which didn’t happen. I’m debating doing Invisalign, but I still have a baby tooth where a canine should be that causes other issues. All things teeth irk me!

I had braces from 2nd grade until 8th grade and while those 6 years were not all that fun, I am so glad my parents did it. I just recently did Invisalign to get them back to perfection for my wedding! Your teeth look great, Miss Meerkat! PS - I will say it was a great way to get milkshakes for 24-48 hours after an adjustment!

Thats’s great! I have been thinking about doing braces before the wedding, I only have about a year or so, which may not be enough time, plus there is the expense. I have the same issue though, small mouth, teeth pushed together makes them crooked and a slight overbite. I want to be able to have a full smile in pictures on my wedding day so I think I may go through with it, hearing your story has definitely given me a push, so thank you!

I had to have all the same done to my mouth as you did and a couple extras. I still have a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth. I had it done in middle/ high school becasue my parents didn’t let me have any say, but I am very happy I had it done! I didn’t like the process so much, I found it to be a bit more painful than you but I guess the outcome is worth it :)

Good for you. I’ve had braces twice in my life, as a kid and an adult (prereq for a surgery). While it is not all peaches and cream, I agree, it is worth it. Congrats on the beautiful smile!

I did a little self-improvement before our wedding too! After having braces when I was younger, one of my gums on my front teeth never really grew back to where it should be, it sort of hung lower then the rest of my gums giving me an uneven smile. I had the gum cut several times while I was in high school but it always grew back. So, I decided I didn’t want to just take pictures from my “good side” on our wedding day. I went and had the gum cut in a way that my Doctor guaranteed it would never grow back. I’m so happy with all my wedding pictures, and seeing that even smile all the way across was the icing on the cake!

I am currently doing Invisalign and wish I had done it before my wedding. I wouldn’t have had time beforehand, but it would have been nice.

Way to be brave with real braces. They terrify me for some reason!

@speechie: Good luck! If they ask if you want to be knocked out, say YES! :D

@Meg: Don’t let the time frame stop you. Find an ortho who does free consultations so you have a better idea what you need to have done.

If they are not off by your wedding they told me I could have them removed for a short timeframe and they would do something called a press over (looks like invisalign) that I could wear until I could get back in the office.

@mjchexum: It isn’t bad at all. And Miss_Cannoli is totally right about it being a great excuse to a milkshake. :D

I’ve never had to have braces - but a good friend of mine, who just got married for the 2nd time (she’s 37) - opted for a retainer about 2 years ago to make sure that a gap she had in her teeth, that she never liked, would be gone by her wedding. Like it was for you, for her it was the best decision she said she made!

I had braces as an adult too, although for a lot longer than a year. (As in just about 4 full years). It’s totally worth it in the end. Actually this month is my 2nd year anniversary of having them off. Hooray! I was so excited for our e-pics.

I did Invisalign before the wedding and I’m so glad I did. I also had braces for 4 years when I was younger but my teeth reverted back. I knew it would be the only thing I was looking at in the pictures.

Totally worth it! Your teeth look great!

I had braces when I got engaged! Haha. I was 29 years old. The kids with autism whom I work with were mesmerized by my teeth. I heard “shiny” and “metal” a lot. But it was alllllllllllll worth it, bc, as my orthodontist/friend said “[My] teeth were really jacked up.”

I have braces! Well, kind of–I have invisalign and I got them once we got engaged. I figured, it’s now or never.

I had braces in junior high, got them off early high school. I still wear my retainer a few nights a week to keep my teeth straight. Want to make sure my parent’s investment pays off :)

i got braces when i was 18–my teeth were BAD, we just couldnt afford them when i was younger. i had them for 2.5 years..UGH. im so happy that i got them (um, they were $6k if that tells how you bad my teeth were), and i was able to get clear ones. HOWEVER, during the time i hated them. HATED THEM. i lost a ton of weight because i had a hard time eating almost the entire time i had them on. still wear my retainers because i never want to go through it again (but it was still worth it haha)
