Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New Zealand Age and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography Student Engagement Date: February 14, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Gardens of the World About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
About Mrs. Earrings

Like Miss Cardigan, I hate asking for help. I pride myself on being quite an independent person, the kind of person that as a little kid would refuse to let anyone help her, saying that “I can do it all by myself.”

Swallowing My Pride and Learning to Delegate : wedding emotional new zealand 4rainy 4Rainy

Me. Age 6ish…wearing my trademark stubborn look. Pic taken by my mother

Well folks, the time has come to admit that I can’t do this wedding all by myself. It just isn’t going to happen if I stay on my high horse and refuse to admit that I just might possibly need some others to give me a hand. Or thirty hands…

I reached this realisation last week after I had a mini (OK, not so mini) meltdown about how everything was going to get done in time for the wedding, and how the whole wedding is going come together in a functional way. Mr E sat me down, let me cry, and then said, “We need help.” *sigh* Sometimes I wish he wasn’t always right…it gets infuriating.

Anyway, after I calmed down, we made a plan of action that details what wedding things we can handle ourselves, what we need to BIY, and what things we need to call in the troops for. Then we made a few calls, wrote a few emails, and sent some Facebook messages. And the offers of help came rolling in, much to my shock. At first I felt bad about asking people for help at all, but it has turned out that not only are people willing to help but they are to be involved in our wedding in this way. Who would have thunk it?

What are the results of me swallowing my pride? Well, one good friend has taken the task of being our day-of-coordinator. She has been involved in multiple weddings (in fact, she is maid of honour at another friend’s wedding a week before ours) and has taken to the job like peanut butter to chocolate. Knowing that our set-up will be in such good hands, and that I won’t have to stress about things running smoothly on the day, is priceless. At the beginning of this planning process I would have said that we could manage that sort of stuff ourselves. But now, I know that having someone else do the job will be invaluable. Plus, two of my mother’s friends said they are itching to help take care of our cupcake hour and dessert service for us. And remember my dad’s boss who is also our ceremony musician? Well, he has offered to provide music for the tea & cupcake hour as well, and is even lending us his fancy-pants sound system free of charge.

Those are just the beginning of the offers of help we have received, and now I’m wondering why I didn’t learn to delegate sooner! Needless to say, we are feeling very blessed and more confident about pulling this wedding off thanks to these lovely people. As more people become involved in this wedding, it is feeling like it is less an individual effort and more like a community effort. I like the idea of that.

What about you? Did delegating wedding-related tasks come easily for you? How have you been blessed by those involved in your wedding?

I feel just like you (that I can do it), but I know that I’ll need to actually take up the offers of help from my friends and family to get everything done once the holidays are over.

Oh my goodness. I feel like I just wrote this. I just went out to dinner with my parents and they were basicall like “Look - you need to chill out and delegate.” I literally just laughed at them and was like “Why would I do that?! I love planning….” and then went on to list all the trillion things I …. “I”…. had to do in the next 6 months. By the end of the conversation, I have handed over some duties to other people involved in the wedding and I already feel a *bit* better. But, I have to admit it is making me a little nervous.

I think I have found my stubbon-personality-twin :o) Glad to know I’m not alone.

Seriously, I truly believe it takes a village to put on a wedding! It sounds like you’ve got amazing support!

I find delegating hard, but I know that I’m going to have to, to make this wedding happy and stress-free. :)

I asked a very good friend of mine to be the DOC. She’s the one person I know who would respect my wishes and is as particular about tasks as I am. A month before our wedding she had an awful experience as a MOH and I told her I would understand if she wanted to back out, although I would not turn bridezilla on her like that. But I’m so glad she didn’t.

I was at such ease when it came to our ceremony, I knew she would be standing right there to take care of EVERYTHING and I had no worries in the world. She even came to the rehearsal just to meet everyone and make sure she had some extra time to prepare. We thanked her with a beautiful card and a little compensation and she cried. Not only was my day perfect because of her, but I think it strengthened our friendship even more.
