Mrs. Cola's Picture
Mrs. Cola, Mountain View, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Product Communications and Promotions Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Managing Partner and Senior Designer Engagement Date: March 5, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Mountain Terrace, Woodside, CA About Me: I’m a Washington State native, enjoying life in Silicon Valley California with my fiancé, our three kitties and one leopard gecko. I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.
About Mrs. Cola

After the scheduled bouquet and garter tosses were over, and the cupcakes had been served, we were free the rest of the evening to just enjoy our reception.

Our reception resembled more of a cocktail party than a crazy dance party, and was just what we wanted: time to kick back with our friends and family and enjoy everyone’s company over some yummy alcoholic beverages.

The above three photos are guest photos

I know most of these photos won’t mean as much to everyone else as they do to us, but I love looking back at everyone just hanging out and enjoying themselves!

That’s because during our planning time, I sort of felt like there was a lot of pressure to make our reception “conform” and fit the more typical format of having lots and lots of dancing. But that just wasn’t us. So we didn’t do it! Sure, a dance or two mixed in would have been fun, but overall, I’m happy that we ended up having a “let’s hang out, drink and catch up” type of reception. It’s definitely true that you can have a wedding reception without a lot of dancing that is still a blast—it’s up to you to set the tone of the reception that you want.

Of course, we did more than just stand around talking and drinking. Our fauxtobooth was still going strong:

And our wedding wasn’t completely devoid of dancing. Some people were breaking it down on the dance floor, especially after the open bar had been busy all night! :)

Also, because our reception was more like a cocktail party, we got a ton of great group shots and posed photos of our guests.

That about sums up the later part of our reception. Again, it’s up to the bride and groom to set the tone of their reception, and if what you want to do resembles a cocktail party or nice dinner party, just go for it! Enjoying yourself and making your reception a reflection of who you  are is what is important. Your guests will grab a drink, put on a silly hat from the fauxtobooth, and follow suit!

What type of tone are you hoping to set at your wedding reception?

I really wish we had done this sort of reception - I think I was so concerned about dancing and having everyone else dancing that I didnt get to enjoy peoples company as much! Thats why I really enjoyed our rehearsal dinner - because we just hung out, ate, drank and had a good time!

OMG! We had the exact same type of reception! And I agree it is so much fun and way chiller than having a dance party. I have a lot if similar guest pictures too. You get to show off your dress some more in these :)

Sounds like you all had sooooo much fun! We had dancing at ours, but it wasn’t over the top and crazy. I didn’t get to do too much dancing either way because I had such a hard time busting a move in my dress.

Some of my fave photos were the guests enjoying themselves at our reception, they were so relaxed and happy. It was just as I pictured it.

It certainly looks like your guests had a great time! :D

I like the idea of a “cocktail party” tone at the reception - when you think about it, getting that many people together in the same place at the same time is very rare, so being able to converse is a great idea!
