Mrs. Panther's Picture
Mrs. Panther, Atlanta GA/Westport CT Age and Occupation: 24, Web Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Music Recording Engineer Engagement Date: March 13, 2010 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: The Inn at Longshore About Me: I'm a total goofball who goes through life at a breakneck pace, trying not to knock anything over. I tend to fall in love with everything I encounter, but more than anything, I love my two little kitties, Bela and Josie, and my big kitty, Mr. Panther! As a wannabe crafter, I'm still waiting for my artistic talents to emerge. (Any day now, really.) In the meantime, I spend my days eating anything put in front of me, buying every pair of shoes I see and absorbing wedding inspiration from every inch of my surroundings. Mr. Panther and I are hardcore New Englanders planning Connecticut nuptials from our new home in the Dirty South, and can't wait to mix our newfound love of classic Southern charm with some modern city touches.
About Mrs. Panther

Recently, there have been some setbacks in the Save the Date process.

I’m trying my best to stay calm about this, but I’m kind of starting to lose my shit. OK, so this is my first big project, and it’s inevitable that things will go wrong. I learn from it and move on, right? Maybe I will—I’m sure I’ll feel much better when I reach the actual point where I can move on, but right now, I’m still looking at days of more work, and those are days I don’t have. I’m trying to step things up at work because I’ve been distracted all summer and fall and I think people are starting to notice, and I’m supposed to be participating in this crazy fitness challenge. What the ham sandwich was I thinking taking on all these things at once?!

Anyway. The setbacks.

First, I accidentally ordered 350 accommodations cards instead of 175. I had them printed two-to-a-page because the 9″x6″ was cheaper than a 4.5″x6″ piece, but I FORGOT I had them printed two-to-a-page, so I ordered twice as many as I needed. So much for saving money. Unfortunately, this was one of the portions that Mr. Panther paid for. He was not thrilled, but at least this didn’t hurt us time-wise—just cash-wise.

Then, this happened:

(Personal photo)

Out of the 175 copies I ordered of the main card, 25 of them have edges like that. I ordered a lot of extras, and have done a fairly good job cutting them out so far, so this ALMOST might have been a non-issue. Unfortunately, I need 155, and my Cricut ate one, so I’m SIX short. Six. Because of that, I can’t check the “Cut out Save the Date cards” item off my To Do list, which kills me, and I’ll be waiting until my free replacements arrive before I can put the damn Cricut away.

But as it turns out, I wouldn’t have been able to put the damn Cricut away, anyway. On Sunday and Monday nights, I spent hours upon hours cutting out photo borders.

(Personal photo. Please pardon the shitty photo quality—Mr. Panther brought his fancycam into work, so I’ve been using my iPhone’s shittycam. Unacceptable, I know.)

Aren’t they cute? Yeah, I think so, too. Here’s the problem. I ordered 100 sheets of Stardream cardstock in “Sapphire” from Envelope Mall. I based this choice off a color swatch deck I have from Cards & Pockets. Stardream is a paper brand, and they only make one shade of “sapphire.” Cards & Pockets calls it “sparkling sapphire,” but I figured it had to be the same. Right? Wrong.

This is what color they were supposed to be—remember this?

Save the Dates Are Cray-Cray (And So Am I) : wedding diy save the dates westport 3 3

(Personal photo)

Yeah … when you look at Envelope Mall’s “sapphire” by itself, it looks like that might be what it is. It’s blue. It’s sparkly. But as I was cutting it, I’d been thinking to myself, “Man, this color looks kind of dull. But it’s probably just the bad lighting over here.”

It wasn’t. The second I moved my pile of 160 completed photo frames into the box where the envelopes are residing, I noticed something. They weren’t the same color. Not at all. While the Envelope Mall “sapphire” looked sparkly bluish by itself, next to the REAL sparkling sapphire, it looks almost gray. It’s hideous. HIDEOUS.

I think it goes without saying that this isn’t going to fly. Yes, I spent $30something and sevenish hours on this paper already. No, I cannot return it. But I didn’t put all this time into picking the PERFECT blue just to send off a Save the Date with a bluish motherfrigging cadet gray bull crap lkasjdflknvaefjlkasdf ugliness. So, I ordered the RIGHT paper from Cards & Pockets (I had ordered from Envelope Mall originally because it was about $2 cheaper), shelled out for two-day shipping, and added a few more days onto this already RIDICULOUS process.

So now, perhaps you see why I am losing my shit a little bit. I can’t blame this on anybody but myself. I’m in a time crunch because I underestimated the amount of work my complicated design would take to assemble, and that’s my fault. Mr. Panther has been helping as much as he can. See?:

(Personal photo)

He’s so proud of all the stickers he made! He’s been working 14-hour days, so he can only do so much, but I’m fully aware that most men would refuse to give up their limited free time for an insane design their nutty fiancé dreamed up. Clearly, the situation could be worse.

I will survive this. For real. Hopefully, in less than a month, I’ll have completely forgotten the feeling of desperation I’m experiencing right now, and I’ll just be happy I sucked it up and did the best I could. But until then… MAN. Talk me off the ledge, people.

Anyone else get a little overwhelmed by your first big project?

Save the dates. I finally completed the design and placed the order from Catprint yesterday and the lady calls me this morning and is telling me something which I wasn’t understanding because it is all paperty-gobble-d-gook (and my math-engineer brain doesn’t know what no-bleed means) and she ends the conversation with u ordered a hard copy proof we can fix it after you get that. So I look up what shes talking about afterwards and yea my proof is going to come in 1/4″ cutoff which is ok and fine we’ll just correct before we order 100 copies, except these should have been out a month ago and november is quickly disappearing. Argh first big project!

Oh man, J. I am in the same boat as you. These Save the Dates are taking a few years off my life. Luckily, we’re not in the money-loosing boat, but we’re definitely in the time losing boat.

… And I haven’t even ordered envelopes yet. . .oops.

Hang in there; I know I am!

Oh! And also, I totally don’t blame you for shelling out the ash for super shipping and new paper. I totally would’ve done the same thing.

Such a bummer! Here’s the upside though: In a few weeks time, it won’t matter that you wanted to pull your hair out or that you thought you were going to lose your shit. Because the first time someone sees your completed work, all those frustrations will melt away and you will be able to see your craftsmanship- and those feelings stick around a lot longer than the frustrations!

Aw that sucks :( Im sure in the end they will look incredible though! I did our invites over 3 months while I was in Indonesia- it seriously sucked. Our printer printed crooked, I couldnt get replacement supplies, and the power went off all the time leaving us to swelter in semi-darkness while we tried to conquer the double-sided tape. Crazy! But in the end they came together and Im happy with them, so I hope that your save the dates come together for you soon as well!

Ughh that sucks about the paper…we had a similar issue too…only I order the wrong weight…apparently paper weight paper is different that cover paper weight. I now have a bunch of stardream opal in the wrong weight, but I’m sure I will find another place to use it.

I’m still working on my s-t-d’s and my wedding is in less than 6 months now…..so I feel your pain! I wanted to do this DIY project to help make my wedding more personal…but WOW did I ever underestimate how much time and effort it’d take. sigh! Hang in there!

@asunw: Yikes! Trying to understand all the paper mumbo-jumbo can be so confusing. I couldn’t help but crack up over my many customer service emails with Catprint, though, because I was working with a woman whose last name was “Anguish,” and I was always so anguished when I talked to her. You at least have to appreciate irony when it comes your way.
@Miss Giraffe: Here’s hoping we both don’t end up with gray hair over these things!
@Miss Earrings: Wow! Here I am complaining about the wrong color paper and you were over there making invitations with no power?! I tip my hat to you, lady.
@Mrs. Locket: Awww! I love Stardream opal, though! You’ll totally find a way to use it. :)
@smiles1979: It never eeeeeeends!

omg you poor thing but HAHHHAHAHAHAHAA!!! i am not laughing at you or your frustrations but at this ridiculously funny post!! you are quite the funny writer and seem to be taking all of this in stride :) i’m also laughing because man have i BEEN THERE! DIY projects can be a bitch, can’t they?? i designed and assembled my invitations all by myself because i didn’t have anyone around to help (my groom lived 2 hours away up until the wedding, and my bridesmaids all live out of town). it took me a solid week to assemble 100 of them! at least i started designing them like 10 months before the wedding so by the time i was ready to print i was ahead of schedule so that week didn’t set me back. this wasn’t because i don’t procrastinate (because i DO) but because i just couldn’t wait to work on them!

this may be a really stupid question.. but i’ve had a cricut for a while now and i still can’t figure out what cartridge everyone uses to make that shape that you used for the photo borders! help!

@Whimsical.Sprite: YIKES. I’d end up hanging myself with a tulle noose, I think!
@nmeyer01: This probably isn’t the answer you’re looking for, but I actually used Sure Cuts A Lot to cut out that shape. It’s from a Martha Stewart place card template. I can’t find the Martha link, but if you have SCAL and want the image, I can send it to you! It’s absolutely not a stupid question — I coveted that shape for months before I figured out how to get it! There’s probably something really similar on a cartridge, but I’m too cheap to buy cartridges, so I wouldn’t know. :)

Our STDs pissed me right off too. Just remember, everything gets better with a little wine! Seriously though, I think the paper projects have to be the biggest P.I.T.A!

@Miss Panther: @Miss Panther: @Miss Panther: I don’t have SCAL yet (keyword - yet) but I’m hoping that i will have fiancé approval as soon as I show it to him! What’s the easiest way to send? And I’m too cheap to buy cartridges too, I love friends who craft ;)
