We love anything having to do with movies, books, video games or technology and we hold a special place in our hearts for our two very spoiled shih-tzus, Wicket and Bravo. We also LOVE to travel. We love it so much it only took us 12 hours after we got engaged to decide to have a destination wedding. We are working our little Meerkat tails off planning a rustic-chic, travel themed destination wedding in the Riviera Maya with a semi-formal, vintage-turned-modern, outdoor at home reception back here in Michigan.

Engagement Announcements: A How-To

November 12th, 2010 @ 11:20 am by Mrs. Meerkat

Emily Post is probably rolling over in her grave right now as I write my own engagement announcement. Traditionally, the mother of the brides writes the engagement announcement, but Mama Meerkat has enough going that on she doesn’t need to have one more thing on her plate. So, I wrote ours:

Engagement Announcements: A How-To : wedding resources riviera maya Scan000 scan000

I really had no idea what I was doing when I started, but after a bit of research I found out there were four main parts.

1. Introduction

This part is very similar to the start of a wedding invitation. There are a few different ways to do this. The bride’s parents can announce, groom’s parents can announce, the bride and groom can announce, or a family member of bride or groom can announce.

2. About the bride

Typically you list your educational background but this can be omitted if you have been out of school for a long time. List your occupation and/or employer. You can include any other information that is relative about you.

3. About the groom

Same as #2, but about the groom.

4. Wedding Information

Most of the time just a date is listed. You can list the location and time too, but just remember that you might have some unexpected guests show up.

Not all papers will have you write your own announcements. We submitted a total of three and only one of the papers had us write it. The other papers just collected the information above on a form so they could write it.

If you submitted engagement announcements, did you have to write your own?

As someone who loves Emily Post books, I have to say, she would not have a problem with this. It’s a lovely announcement and that picture of the two of you is so sweet!

I wrote my own engagement announcements, so no worries! I’m sure many brides do the same. :) I thought it was fun!

Great picture!!!

Just a note and I don’t want to be a debbie downer but I’ve always heard to not put the actual date in your announcement but just the month. The thinking is that certain seedy people could be reading these thinking that you probably have a lot of new stuff lying around the house from shower and wedding gifts and you’re not going to be home on this date. Sadly, it’s pretty easy to google one of your names to find your address.

The newspaper that my announcement was in provided a form to fill out. I have never heard of having the mother of the bride do it. Oh silly wedding “rules.”

I just provided the date and the city for the wedding details, not a specific location. Although pretty unlikely, I didn’t want anybody just showing up either.

@MUI831: I thought of that but wasn’t too worried since we have a friend house sitting for us. :D

Thanks for posting! I’ve been wondering how to write ours, and my future mother-in-law is so anxious to get it in the paper; it’s all she’s talked about since our engagement! :)

Oh, and I didn’t even notice that you went to Michigan Lutheran HS! I know a couple people who went there, as well. Small world!

@Blue Daisy: Totally small world! You are one of the few who would even know where my old high school is. :D

That’s lovely! I wish we would’ve done something like this, what a nice memento to have of your engagement!

Great tips! We didn’t do a public announcement, but our parents did put a “We’re Engaged” card/picture in the Christmas cards they sent out because we got engaged in December.
