Invitation Excitation, Part II

November 12th, 2010 @ 2:58 pm by Ms. Sloth

Now that we had our invitation design all figured out, it was time to figure out what to do with them.

For the sake of being green, I’d originally wanted to have nothing else in the envelope except for the invitation itself. I was planning on asking Printable Press to put a small line at the bottom of the invitation that said something like “For additional details and to RSVP, please visit our website” with a link.

But then, I started second guessing myself. The first reason was a practical one: people just don’t read the small print. Period. I don’t want fifty phone calls from guests who were wondering how to RSVP. I also felt that, without a card, our guests wouldn’t have the reminder to RSVP. They’d just stick the invitation somewhere and never think of it again.

The second reason wasn’t practical at all. This reason was inspired by photos of beautifully put together invitation suites. Like these amazing mix tape invitations:

Or Miss Thimble’s stunning letterpress suite:

Or this adorable roaring ’20s suite:

I don’t need over-the-top extravagance. But I want our invitations to look pretty.

And so I came up with a compromise between environmental friendliness and beauty: each envelope will contain one invitation and one RSVP card. There will be no inner envelope, and the RSVP card will be a postcard, so there’s no envelope required for that, either. I’ll probably tie them together with twine or ribbon, and I’m going to steal (ahem…I mean borrow) Mrs. Thimble’s idea of getting teeny little cards to direct our guests to the website.

As far as envelopes go, I considered pocketfolds, but there are so many different kinds! That was too much of a decision for this sloth, so I’m going with plain old envelopes.

Did you have to compromise between green and pretty for your invitations?

I’m totally stealing the Moo card idea, too!
I can’t wait to see your invitations. :)

We went through the same thing! How do you balance eco-friendly vs. pretty paper vs. expense vs. getting info out there… ack! And, we came to pretty much the same conclusion as you- 1 invite & 1 rsvp (though we’re still doing a card/envelope for that since I feel weird broadcasting my wedding response list across the USPS.)
I also loved the idea of doing a moo-card with it for website info, but wonder if it would be overkill to list it there AND on the invite, as our original plan had been…? Does it become overkill to have it both places or does it just stress that we really want people going there for info?

Oh yay! I’m glad I could be inspiring ;) Passed down from many-a-moo card-using Bee to be sure. I struggled with pretty paper versus green too. The paper was cotton, the envelopes were recycled paper… at least.
@missbiscuit: I don’t think it would be overkill. Our guests loved our moo cards, but they really didn’t notice the website printed on our save the dates. I’d go for both if that’s what you want to do.

Ours were green. I knew no one would appreciate fancy the way that I would, so I just K.I.S.S. :)

At first I only wanted postcard RSVPs, but there are so many pretty ones that aren’t condusive to postcards…

Great idea! I knew we were going to have a lot of paper, so I opted for plantable, which, even though I know our guests are going to their invites forever (ahem) if they didn’t, they are at least totally biodegradable!

I showed Mr. the moo cards, and he loved them, so we are using those, too.
I can’t wait to see your invites!

We skipped all the extra envelope, cards, cards for directions etc. bullocks too. We’re both just so damn practical :D

We went through the same dilemma and did exactly what you’re doing- just 2 cards in an envelope- a double sided invitation and an RSVP postcard. I was going to tie them together with twine, but in the end, they were fine without the extra step. I can’t wait to see your invites!
