About Mrs. Prairie Dog

The Bee-Yourself Bride

November 12th, 2010 @ 9:18 am by Mrs. Prairie Dog

I consume a fair amount of low-brow media, so it doesn’t take me long to see a fashion trend fives times. Say, boyfriend jeans or oxfords. This is how my reactions to these trends go:

  1. Ew. Weird.
  2. Hmm. Interesting.
  3. Ah. Maybe it works, there.
  4. That’s pretty cute.
  5. I have already purchased it, and I’m wearing it like I invented it.

Style lemming. Or at least: easily confused by trends.

I really want my wedding to feel like me and Mr. PD, so I don’t look back and realize I did something because other brides were doing it. But how do you know what’s really you and what is a trend you’ve seen one too many times?

My solution has been to look at what things are already a part of my life—things that I’ve loved enough to spend time or money or both on. I looked for elements in my own home that can be built on for a wedding. I’m chronicling this now because I’m going to try to refer back to this post as our wedding decor evolves.

What I found was pastels, birds, monograms, trees, and more…

OK, now that you are screaming UNCLE for the house pics, this is what I learned:

1. I bleed pastel.

2. My idea of decorating is putting a bird or tree there.

3. I am vainly obsessed with my own initials.

4. I ran out of room for my books and started using them as decorations.

Did you try to pull inspiration from looking at things you already own?

I think that you are awesome for looking at your home for inspiration for your wedding. Why didn’t I do that? Oh yeah, because I don’t decorate. :p

Awesome commentary, btw… loved the “overflowing trashcan”

I love your house pics! Your place is soooo cute! And that’s serious a genius idea to find out what’s really you. It’s so easy to forget what you like when you have “wedding brain.” And, boy, do you like birds! No, really, they’re super cute! hehehe

Oh, and do you remember when you got that giant monogram E? I kind of super love it!

I definitely agree with this. I’m also a big decorate with books person.

Haha, great pics! I got frustrated and came to the same conclusion, just stick to what works–I have an obsession with history, books, text, and design, so that’s what I’m bringing into the wedding. Done and done!

I was going to buy that same exact shower curtain but talked myself out of it. Do you like it?

If I used my apartment as inspiration, my wedding theme would be “Broken Ikea Furniture and Dishes In Need of Washing.” Yours looks great though :)

Good idea.Wish I would have thought of it. I just let the season fall dictate my color choices.

I absolutely loved this post! I couldn’t stop laughing over how you described your consumption of trends - that is me, a million times over. And also, I love everything about your house. It’s absolutely perfect…. the kind of place I stalk MLS for, looking to renovate and decorate exactly like that! ;-)

Your house is really lovely!! But I must add a perhaps provocative comment: I think it’s wonderful to start by looking in your own house and surroundings for inspiration, before getting caught up with wedding trends. But… what if your house is also decorated according to what is trendy at the moment? Or at least I say that because I am often changing the decor items in my house so it’s challenging to find a theme which I will find timeless! (but of course seeing your decor and lifestyle, I doubt you’ll tire of books anytime soon ;-)

@Erica: you are right, of course! but i’ve had most of this stuff for at least two years, which is a small step up from looking at each new MSW and proclaiming everything PERFECT FOR ME, haha

Girl, I am the same way! Most of the inspiration photos I’ve saved are black and white, grey, and jewel tones…. and that’s EXACTLY what I see when I look around my house! If we love the look enough to live in it, we’re gonna love looking at our photos, too :)

Your home decor is awesome! Props for the TKMB poster! Ikea sells super cheap poster frames if you want to spruce it up a bit. :)

Books are definitely part of our decor - we have so many bookcases in our living room, you can’t tell what colour our walls are painted!
