My Other Wedding

November 14th, 2010 @ 4:30 pm by Mrs. Elephant

If we weren’t having the wedding that we are, I have a strong feeling that we would have gotten married in the city of sin. Vegas, baby!!

The funny thing is, when we got engaged, many of our friends asked if we would be getting married in Vegas.

This may be an odd question for most couples, but if you knew my family, you wouldn’t think twice about it. You see, my family LOVES Vegas!

Date night in Vegas with a gondola ride

Our first trip was back in 1994. I’ll always remember being in Vegas and watching the OJ Simpson car chase. Between ’94 and now, I’ve been to Vegas close to 50 times. Our family would go for any reason; spring break, Christmas, New Years, Brother E’s 21st birthday and (related to weddings) my parents’ 25th anniversary renewal. My parents renewed their vows in 2002 at the Rio in the Gardenia Chapel.

For my “other” wedding, I would have added Vegas touches to the DIY paper products.

While my parents had a lovely indoor ceremony for their vow renewal, I would probably still look for an outdoor location like Juno Garden at Caesar’s Palace.

I would want to play up the Vegas setting with photos taken on the strip:

And of course, we’d have a Vegas themed cake.

Maybe we could finish off our wedding day with a little luck at the roulette tables?

If you could plan a wedding different than your current wedding, where would it be?

I love the idea of a Vegas wedding with all the fun DIY details! If I had gotten married somewhere else it would have been in Charleston, SC at Founders Hall - http://www.foundershallcharleston.com/gallery.html

Vegas is awesome! I’m impressed by how many times you’ve been there, haha.

In an alternate universe, I think I’d get married at the church my parents/grandparents got married in, and have a big ballroom reception. Or I’d elope. Hmmm…

We totally were contemplating Vegas for the longest time! So much fun!

I think if it wasn’t for my strong desire for a church wedding that we may have thought about going to “Star Trek the Experience”. FI would have definitely tried to push that if we had considered destination weddings. lol
Other than that I think I may have liked a beach wedding maybe in Cuba or Hawaii.
I think we would think about on a cruise.

The most likely alternative though with our budget would have been city hall, and that’s not very romantic here.

Hmmm, I think a tropical island would be great. we had our honeymoon in the Maldives and saw their traditional weddings on the beach and we both fell in love with the idea. Just seemed so relaxing unlike our actual wedding - stress, stress, stress

That is exactly what I had originally planned to do! Right down to the same kind of cake, invitations, save the dates and photos on the strip. I still kind of miss that idea, although its all over now. The only reason we didn’t go through with that plan is because my husband’s mom has pulmonary hypertension and cannot fly, and there is no way we would want her to have to miss the wedding. It also was kind of costly to fly us, our kids, our parents and a couple of friends out there for a couple of days to be there. Since our total budget ended up less than $6000 it just wasn’t possible financially anyway.

But that is definitely what I will do for our vow renewal in maybe 5 years, lol, just not so extravagant.

We agreed immediately to get married in our current city (and where FI is from originally) because it’s where our church is. So, that limited our reception venue possibilities to a certain radius of the church.

But … I still look at my hometown’s wedding venues and venues that are further away from our church here once in a while … just to think about the other possibilities! (And to price-compare….I’m a budget shopper, I can’t help it!) Thankfully, I still love what we actually chose best.

I’m proud to say that I am a destination-Vegas bride! Getting married at the Wynn. It was such a perfect choice for us, although I wish our families were as supportive as your would have been about the idea. It’s been a rough road, but it’s still our choice and we can’t wait!

I would pick somewhere totally opposite of where we got married. Something outdoors in the midst of nature, and international…probably Italian villa style. :)

If it wasn’t for FH being an only child and a mama’s boy (in the best way possible), and me being the oldest child and only girl - we would have so done Vegas!! We are already planning a late honeymoon trip to Vegas.

We got married in Vegas!! We are like you, and will go for ANY reason. We love it there. Our friends and family are convinced we will move out there at some point. We’ve even thought about buying a second home out there. Our Vegas wedding wasnt too “Vegas” themed, but it was amazing. I totally support and encourage vegas weddings!!!

@smileyd: Haha, I’m not a Stra Trek fan (my cousin is) but I have been through it when we were in Vegas.

@aubrav: A vow renewal in Vegas would be something that I would want to do too!

@geniebean: I would LOVE to go to a wedding at the Wynn, it is so beautiful there! I hope you have a wonderful wedding, and that your family comes around with your decision.

@soontobekatieb: A second home would be so tempting (save on hotels). My parents joke that they will probably retire out there. My mom is all for a retirement job helping Vegas brides!

When my fiancee and I got engaged, his concerns were of two things: location and food. Location being Las Vegas. Being a transplant in Mississippi from California with family in Las Vegas I wasn’t really too fond of this idea. I only agreed to it because I knew most other details would be what I want and not him, so I let him have this decision. I really preferred a beautiful southern belle type wedding on an old plantation somewhere. The more I think about having our wedding in Las Vegas I like it because it allows more of my friends and family to join us. This not being his first rodeo, a larger part of his family does not care to join us. Everyone has asked if were getting married at the little white chapel, of which I am happy to announce that we will be saying “I DO” in a beautiful hotel.

The beach!!! Sea Isle City, Nj to be exact! Who doesn’t want to get married with no shoes! I love the idea of a non-tradtional wedding but when it came down to it, your parents had it right. Great idea for a re-commitment wedding : )

I’ve always joked about going to Vegas and getting married by Elvis… I’ve never been to Vegas, so maybe for a vow renewal?
