I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

One Blinged Out Cake Topper

November 15th, 2010 @ 5:16 pm by Mrs. Hippo

I just finished up a DIY project, and I can’t wait to share. Just as a refresher, I bought a custom cake topper on Etsy using our wedding logo, and my plan was to bedazzle the crap out of it. Which I did. And it’s pretty freakin’ awesome…in my opinion. Wanna see?

My picture totally doesn’t do it justice, ’cause in real life those Swarovski crystals sparkle like you wouldn’t believe. I ended up using two colors of blue crystals (dark indigo and cobalt) and two colors of yellow crystals (citrine and light topaz) from Artbeads.com in various sizes. You can really tell that there are two different colors in the picture (particularly in the blue), but in real life it’s much more subtle and just gives the topper a little bit of dimension. Sweet!

What DIY projects are you blinging out?

@spitfire229: I did bedazzle both sides. I didn’t think I was going to originally, but since it’s acrylic, you could see backs of the rhinestone through the back, and it didn’t look great. Plus, my cake table is going to be in a middle of the room on a round table, so I realized people would see both sides. Even though it won’t be readily from the back and the initials will be backwards, I figured it would look better… which it does. The “sticks” are still there. They are just triangular shaped pieces of acrylic. Since they’re clear, it doesn’t show up in the picture so well, but that’s what I’m holding the cake topper from on the left side. You can see my fingers holding the acrylic piece.

@afuturemrsl: I did it in a couple of settings… maybe 3 hours total from beginning to end. I would literally bedazzle and watch tv at the same time. It was super easy… Just bought crystals in various sizes, used a beading glue that I got from Michael’s… spread about 3/4″ of glue at a time on the acrylic topper, and then used tweezers to place the crystals to fill up the space.

Good call to use two-tone for your colors. It adds so much more depth & dimension!
