Us Meerkats are just a couple fun lovin’ geeks from Michigan. We love anything having to do with movies, books, video games or technology and we hold a special place in our hearts for our two very spoiled shih-tzus, Wicket and Bravo. We also LOVE to travel. We love it so much it only took us 12 hours after we got engaged to decide to have a destination wedding. We are working our little Meerkat tails off planning a rustic-chic, travel themed destination wedding in the Riviera Maya with a semi-formal, vintage-turned-modern, outdoor at home reception back here in Michigan.
About Mrs. Meerkat

I in no way, shape or form am a party girl. On a typical Friday night you can find us Meerkats at dinner with friends and then out to a movie. We like the simple life. And that simple life doesn’t involve what most people would consider for a “typical” bachelorette party. I want nothing to do with bars, strippers or penis-shaped cakes.

Sorry MOH Meerkat. I know you were hoping for an all out flash-back-to-the-college-years style debacle, but I want to do something I will be able to remember the next morning.

Sister Meerkat kicked off the brainstorming process to find alternatives to the traditional party. Her first thought was to get dressed up all Sex and the City-style and head out to one of the local casinos.

I think that idea lasted about three weeks until it was replaced by the idea to hop the train and head into Chicago for the day. The only problem was that we would only be in Chicago from 11AM to 5PM and we couldn’t come up with a single thing that we could do in that time frame as a group, other than eat and shop. That would be fine, but I felt like something would be missing.

Recently, we found out that the musical Wicked was coming to Kalamazoo.

ZOMG, ZOMG, ZOMG! Mr. Meerkat and I have been DYING to see this but the tickets were ranging from $65-$150 each. Neither one of us felt right about spending that much with the wedding so close. Then I started thinking: what if instead of buying train tickets to Chicago, we got tickets to see Wicked? When I proposed the idea to everyone I got a resounding, “we have been dying to see that, too!”

Everyone loved the idea, so now are going to get all dressed up, go out to an awesome girls-only dinner in downtown Kalamazoo, and then meet up with our guys to go see Wicked. Done and done! While it felt kind of odd suggesting the idea for my own party, I am really glad I did.

I am dying to know if I am the only one out there who isn’t into the whole bar/stripper/penis cake scene? What did you end up doing for your bachelorette party?

That sounds like a great idea to me! I’m not much of a party girl anymore either, especially because any more than a few drinks during an entire night will have me out of commission the next day. I am thinking some kind of spa day/wine tasting/dinner kind of thing for mine.

BTW, Wicked is great, you’ll love it!

I love that idea! My bridesmaids have been asking me what I want to do for my bachelorette and I keep saying that I don’t really want to do anything. I’m not a party girl, I mostly just like to hang at home and with my family. And with the wedding so close, the idea of having another busy day is really just more exhausting for me. Maybe I’ll agree to a dinner out. Does anyone else feel like an ideal bachelorette would just be a day at home alone napping and watching movies?

I just got back from my Bachelorette weekend in Nashville where I specifically requested no trashy penis shaped anything.

We went to a really nice dinner and then out to the bars/”honky tonks” and stayed out til 3am. Which is not something I ever do anymore. I did wear a tiara with a veil and a sash that said “Bride to Be.” Since lets be honest, how often can you wear a tiara out? And they are awesome.

I’m really glad that I laid down the no penises rule though! Made for a fun and classy night!

Wicked definitely = amazing. Buy the soundtrack so you can sing along with it in your car and/or shower afterwards.

I’ve seen Wicket twice in Chicago…and will probably see it again when it’s in Kalamazoo. What a fantastic idea for a bachelorette party, that will be SO fun!

@AlejandraRamos: ROFL! YES! A couple weekends ago I curled up for a day and watched an entire season of supernatural. It was pure heaven!

I now know what I’m going to do for MY bachelorette party! XD Because I don’t like the drunken stripper scene either!

Fantastic alternative! :)

A few of my closests friends and I are planning a weekend in NYC for my ‘bachelorette’ party which is more a girls weekend away then anything to do with fake penises and ridiculous amounts of alcohol.

I had planned to see Wicked there but its coming to our city next spring so I will definitely be picking up tickets.

I’m so totally not into the getting-sloppy-drunk-and-going-to-strip-clubs thing.
One of my best friends is being a total angel and planning a girls’ weekend hiking in Big Sur. It will be SO amazing, I can’t wait!! :D

OMG, LOVE WICKED. Prepare to have your music-playing device of choice completely monopolized by the soundtrack for the weeks/months following your party. I love your bachelorette party idea, and now I’m inspired to see what shows are in my neck of the woods for my own party. Great idea!!

p.s. oh, we were TOTALLY into the whole stripper/bar scene bach party for mine lol! actually my girls surprised me with the stripper at our hotel room before we went out to the bars. i really should have seen it coming seeing as the idea was never even mentioned during the planning process. we went to Louisville KY which was central for everyone and a great city to party in, the bars are open til 4am! and we shut them down :) i remember everything tho. i’m a party girl but i also know how to NOT black out haha!

Wicked is AMAZING. You’re going to have a fantastic time!
I myself am more of a homebody so something simple appeals to me as well. The one caveat being that I love to dance. I’m guessing mine will be a day out either wine tasting or at a spa with my two bridesmaids and then maybe a dinner out and a club that night. But no penis shenanigans. Just dancing!

That’s awesome! I love your idea…I’m dying to see it too. lol

and I’m not into that kind of thing either. Not a party girl. A few drinks at a pub with some friends? Fine. But nothing crazy…and definitely no strippers. Nothing wrong with those who are, but I personally find it disrespectful. So that’s a big no for both my s/o and I. I probably won’t even have a bachlorette party.
