MOB Dress Shopping Part 1

November 16th, 2010 @ 5:45 pm by Mrs. Elephant

Mama Elephant (mother of the bride, MOB) has been absolutely amazing during all of this wedding planning. It has (and will continue) to be one of the most wonderful bonding experiences for the two of us.

No average dress would do for such an awesome MOB. Mom’s dress criteria included the fact that the dress could not be black and that it had to include some bling. Our first stop for the day was Stardust Celebrations, which you may have heard about from the WE reality show, Girl Meets Gown.

We had the sweetest associate helping us out, and although their prices were a little high, we did find a couple contenders.

Well, from the looks of this first dress, you must be thinking to yourself, “Miss Elephant, this doesn’t meet your mom’s criteria—that dress is black and has no bling,” and you are correct. We were looking into the one shoulder option, and this bridesmaid’s dress caught our eye. It comes in an array of colors and we were told that we could add bling to it, so mom tried it on. It fit well, but our imaginations couldn’t picture how it would be with some sparkle (or the cost to add that sparkle), so it was a no go.

Here was my personal favorite of our entire day, which happened to also be the most expensive. :(

It was a beautiful color and had just the right amount of bling. It also included a jeweled wrap that she could wear for the ceremony and leave off while she’s dancing the night a way.

After we left Stardust, we headed to the near by mall and checked out Macy’s, Dillard’s & Saks Fifth without any luck. We did find a couple of dresses on sale at Neiman Marcus that were pretty, but not winners.

This one looks blue in the flash, but was actually more of a purple color

We liked the back on this one.

So MOB shopping trip #1 wasn’t successful, but let’s hope for a better outcome next time!

Did you go dress shopping with your mom for her dress? What criteria did your mother have for her dress?

I missed out on MOB dress shopping! :( We’re 8 hours away from each other. She found a dress while visiting my grandmother. Requirements were summer color, not dowdy, not overly fussy and able to wear again. Can’t wait to see what your mom picks!

I love the last one your mum is wearing!

Mum wants something with sleeves, which is turning out to be hard to find. I don’t think she wants floor-length either. I think the ideal is a v-neck wrap with 3/4 length sleeves, and tea length skirt, in a blue dupioni silk type fabric.

When your ideas are that specific, it’s hard to find something!
We live in different cities, so I probably won’t go shopping with her.

Ahhhh, I love the black one! I just have a thing for black dresses. I also love the second one - any chance it’ll go on sale?

@Mrs. Glasses: I wish! But let’s just say mom has had some luck, so I’ll be excited to share her new “design” tastes ;)

Oh wow, I love the first and last dresses on her. If you could find a one-shoulder dress like the first one in another color with the bling, that’d be perfect.

I actually think the first dress is great, and she can dress it up with a jeweled wrap, bold brooches / a large flower etc?

I love the first one, however it should have been in a different color. But they all look stunning on her

Pretty Mama Elephant! I liked dress #2 the best. Too bad it’s a pricey one.

I went dress shopping with my Mom several times. She is pretty and has a great figure still, so we didn’t want to put her in anything too matronly. However, she didn’t want something so trendy that she looked like a bridesmaid either. Therefore, our dress shopping was kind of hard.

However, we ended up finding a stunning trumpet gown with delicate beading all over it. I love it, and my mom looks absolutely gorgeous in it!

I also agree that I liked dress #2 on your mom. It’s a shame that it is so expensive, but I’m sure you will find something that you both adore.
