I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Getting Our Ducks in a Row

November 16th, 2010 @ 1:25 pm by Mrs. Brooch

There was a Federal holiday last week and I knew I needed to use every minute of my day off to push out some wedding projects. My mom stayed the night with me, and she knew the plan for the day: haul ass to get as much wedding-related stuff done as possible! She woke me up at 7:40 AM, which is what time I usually wake up for work, and it was go time!

Puzzled that I started off on the computer, which is my usual spot for wedding planning (mostly gathering inspiration or writing task lists), my mom made a suggestion: “Why don’t you stop preparing to start, and just start.”

HELLO!

Aren’t moms great? They really are! She was so right, and believe me,  I told her, “I’ve been so ready to start.”

We’re a little less than 5 months our and I can still remember that nagging feeling more than a year ago to do something! Anything!

It’s the perfect time too, because my grandmother just left for Florida and I’m in a big house all alone. This meant I could spread out my wedding junk all over the house, and it wouldn’t bother a single soul. It would only stand to inspire me, which is just what I need at this stage in the game! So, mom was right and it was time to stop thinking about starting, and get to it!

Our first order of business was to score more goodies from granny’s basement! I’m a stickler for that whole “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure” mantra. I get it from my mom, so she was ready to hit the dusty shelves with me.

Our fabulous find?

These beautiful vintage mirrors:

SCORE!

My thought? Use these as signage!

Our other signs will be recycled old frames that we’ve made into chalkboards. Perfect, no? I hope so! In order to accomplish any of this, though we had to pull out the stack of frames in my room and see what we had to work with.

Here’s what I had (plus the two mirrors):

Not too bad for stuff that would have otherwise ended up in the trash, right?

Well, truth be told, not all of them are usable, but that was sort of the purpose of pulling them out. We had to figure out was what we still needed! I wrote a list of all the places I thought we’d need signage: the welcome, photobooth, and cocktail hour signs.

We labeled each usable piece with a sticky note indicating what it would be used for, and what needed to be done so that it was ready on our wedding day. In this case (the photo below), we chose to put the more rustic frames outside (we’re going to paint them white), and use the fancy mirrors for signage inside!

I had such a sense of accomplishment when we finished sorting the frames and labeling them. I feel really good that we have an accurate list of the other frames we need (there are lots!) and that we know what we need to get and do to get the ones pictured here ready.

It might seem like a small task to all of you, but it was paramount for me! Half the battle is ALWAYS organization, so to have everything laid out and organized was GREAT NEWS.

In this case, I can’t afford to wait to the last minute and see how it turns out. I need to know what signs are needed, what work needs to be done, and/or what needs to be bought to get us there! These were all reasons that this little start to our day was so good.

Plus, it was only about 10AM when we finished, and I still had a whole day to do more! Yippee!

Next up: Find a use for our load of vases, and mantel decor!

Very impressive and motivating. I need to just ’start’ too.

And think my visit to my parent’s for christmas will consist of similar hunts.
