Etsy - How Not To Get Burned

November 17th, 2010 @ 2:00 pm by Mrs. Meerkat

Recently I was burned on Etsy (as in never got my purchase), and let me tell you, it SUCKS! In an effort to help everyone else not get burned I thought I would write up a few guidelines about buying on Etsy. First, let’s start with the story of what happened so you can see where I went oh-so-wrong.

This summer I purchased a custom parasol from Michelle’s This and That on Etsy which was scheduled to be painted Mid-July. August came, and there was no parasol. I messaged the seller to find out where my parasol was and she told me she was just getting ready to start it. At this point my spidey senses were telling me there was danger ahead, but I brushed them aside.

September arrived and there was still no parasol. When I messaged her again I was assured she was sending it out right then and she sent me a delivery confirmation number. The package never got delivered no matter how many times I desperately clicked the refresh button on the USPS tracking page. When I inquired back to the seller she said it must have been “lost” in the mail. She then offered to make me a new one, and I once again ignored those darn spidey senses.

I spent most of October messaging the seller with no response. When I finally had had enough and asked for a refund she responded within 10 minutes of my message. She said she was waiting for me to respond to her message asking for address confirmation (a message I never got). At this point my brain was screaming at me: “Danger Will Robinson. Danger!” But once again I ignored it because I REALLY wanted this parasol. I confirmed my address and she sent another USPS delivery confirmation number. Two weeks later, and there was still no parasol.

At that point I decided to take a look at her feedback, only to see that two other brides within the past two weeks had left negative reviews for undelivered parasols. It is now the middle of November: I have no parasol and there is little chance I will ever see it or my money again.

So, let’s go over the mistakes I made so you can avoid getting burned:

1.) 45 days is the limit for PayPal disputes

If the seller quotes you a date that is more than 45 days from the date of purchase, ask to wait to pay until the seller is within 45 days from completing the project.

2.) Pay half down and half when the product ships

I wish I had asked to pay half down to cover supplies and half down at time of shipping. At least this way there was a chance that the second half of my payment would have been made within the 45 days, I could’ve disputed it.

3.) Keep an eye on the shop’s reviews

When I ordered my parasol I saw nothing in her reviews that worried me. Once I purchased the item, I never went back to look at her reviews. Had I kept my eyes open I would have seen her reviews slowly getting worse and worse.

4.) Report abuse to Etsy

If for any reason you think a seller is doing something wrong like this you can report the issue to abuse@etsy.com. I included full documentation of conversations with the seller and copies of her other negative reviews showing the same issues.

Are there any other tips I am forgetting about?

i’m really sorry about this episode. I cant imagine how annoyed you must be!

I felt compelled to add that paypal does not cover partial payments/deposits :( Your best bet is to ensure the item is delivered before the 45-day mark, or move on to another seller!

oh, and ALSO…you do have time after opening the dispute to wait until the item arrives- I believe its as much as 20 days.

The dispute process is simply an official means of communication. It is when you decide to ‘claim’ that communication stops. So even when your spidey senses were tingling, had you opened a dispute on day 45, you would still have been able to give your seller more time to send your item before escalating the case.

That is so terrible! I had three Etsy purchases and was always really worried that I was going to get burned. I hope you get your money back!

I’ve also been stuck with the paypal limit on refunds (but eBay not etsy). I think some people take advantage of that

Thanks guys. It sucks but after 32 purchases in the last year I was bound to get burned once before I learned.

@finlandfairy: I am afraid that is what that seller is doing as there were 4 different people in the first 3 pages of reviews all complaining of non-delivery of their parasols.

Oh wow, that’s awful! I’m sorry about your parasol. I’ll be sure to never order from her.

Today I decided to make my first purchase on Etsy and it is a custom order. I have recently been burned on another online purchase so I’m really nervous. The seller was quick to respond to my questions but asked if she could ship after Jan 3, which coincedently is 47 days from now. I checked her reviews and they are all positive but I’m not very trusting of reviews. I have a bad gut feeling about it but was trying to blame that on my other experience but this post might be a sign….

If you paid via credit card, let them know and submit a dispute. More likely than not they can credit your account.

Good luck!

@BunnyBunz: I would totally ask her if you could pay when whatever it is you are ordering is getting ready to be made. That way you have a way to dispute it.

That’s good advice! I’ll ask her if I can wait to pay until then.

@Mrs. French Bulldog: Actually thanks to Mrs. Sewing I am going to give it a shot on my own. So I am thinking it will all work out in the end but I would have loved to avoid the stress of all this.

I love when Etsy sellers (and other vendors, not just Etsy) do things to piss customers off and never respond to their emails or calls or texts or smoke signals etc but once you write about them on the bee or the boards, they come running up here to explain. I wonder if the Etsy seller will come on here. To the OP, I’m sorry about what happened to you and I’m glad you have put your stuff up here for us to know how to go about buying things from Etsy.

You can still complain to Paypal - you may not get your money back, but they are pretty good at revoking Paypal privileges from sellers when they don’t deliver. Might be worth a shot - if you and a few of the other brides were to do that, there’s a good chance you could have her shut down (still not getting your money back…but they would at least get what they deserve!)

So helpful, thanks for sharing! I’m sad about how many of us have been burned by our vendors!
