Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Digger’s Paradise

November 17th, 2010 @ 5:23 pm by Mrs. Brooch

The time has come to share one of my favorite places in the whole world with you.

Introducing Page Valley Flea Market (also known as a trash scavenger’s haven!):

Digger's Paradise : wedding arlington decor P101077 P101077

At first glance, this flea market looks like nothing but garages on the side of the road, but beware, looks can be deceiving! Dig a little deeper (literally), and you’ll find lots—and I mean lots—of wedding day goodies. You’ve got to be willing to hunt, though! They don’t call this place “Digger’s Paradise” for nothin’!

I know what you’re thinking: that’s just a whole lot of junk!

Think again!

We scored a load of awesome vases for the wedding, and plan on returning again very soon! Here’s a picture of my mom getting lost in the stacks:

Tea cups, anyone?

China?

This place has tons!

And what do we have here?

Green + Vintage = Bliss for Miss Brooch!

At first just a few vases caught our attention, but after a little digging, we were able to find more than 20 of varying shapes and sizes to use at the reception.

Since our venue is full of fireplace mantels that will need decorating, we hope these will come in handy. My grandmother is also a master at designing fake flower arrangements. I hope she’ll work with me to make these vases come to life for our wedding!

Guess how much our 20 vases cost?

At just 50 cents per vase, we paid about $12. Woo hoo!

Here’s a sneak peek of our mantel mock-ups:

Now imagine flowers and tea lights. Pretty, no?

Have you found anything for your wedding at a thrift store?

Would you even consider looking?

I would love to have a place like that to go in my city. Most of the ‘flee markets’ are over priced.

There is a warehouse called Art Junktion that was started by two teachers that is full of other people’s/companies’ ‘junk’ that could be used as craft/art supplies and everything is FREE. I plan on checking that out and crossing my fingers but I doubt I’ll get vases & china.

What an awesome find, those vases are perfect!! That looks like a barn sale where I found a lot of china. I love that yours is a regular flea market!

Great finds! I wouldn’t be any good in a place like that because I would want to spend all my time straightening the booths rather than looking for stuff. :)

I wish that place was around here. I did exactly what you did. I went to a local thrift store and found loads of pretty vases for cheap. :) It was budget saving bliss!

Pretty fireplace mantle mockup! It’ll look great with the assorted green glass vases. In fact, it kind of reminds me of Martha Stewart… they’re always doing matchy/mis-matchy collections for display and it’s so visually interesting.

I love the vintage looking green glass. I am also having green as my wedding color, and am also using vintage style green glass. I would maybe try the vases with just the tealights or tiny white lights and no flowers, as they may take away from the cool designs of the glass. Just a suggestion. Good Luck with your hunting adventures!

Wow, Shenandoah isn’t too far from me, I wish I knew about this place when we were planning our wedding! But the Goodwill came through enough for me…

Can’t wait to see how it looks complete!

I found mason jars on Craig’s list for free - really old vintage ones - not the new kind you can buy at the grocery store! I got about 100 that I’m using for centerpieces, candle holders, to hang from shepard hooks to decorate the aisle, etc. etc. I LOVE thrift store shopping and usually get my fix during the summer at yard sales! Good find miss B! Can’t wait to see what your grandmother comes up with!

Miss Brooch, if you need more items, check out Value Village on New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring. It’s a bit closer but the store is HUGEEEEEEE and you can find some great additional pieces there. :-)
