Bridal Party Duds

November 17th, 2010 @ 11:38 am by Ms. Sloth

Let’s take a walk down Indecision Lane, shall we?

First I considered mismatched floral bridesmaid dresses. Then I wanted ivory. And then mismatched brights and then mismatched yellow. I shot down each idea. Florals would be too hard to coordinate. Ivory and yellow aren’t flattering on all skin tones. Mismatched brights weren’t cohesive enough.

And then, it finally came to me. Mismatched grey.

I emailed my bridesmaids and told them that they could wear any grey dress they wanted, any shade, as long as it was approximately knee-length and not sparkly or too tight or revealing. That’s it.

We’ve also made the final decision on what the groomsmen will be wearing as well. Grey pants. white shirts. Dark purple ties. Black shoes. Basically, the same thing as Mr. S, without the jacket.

Sounds like a lot of grey, right? I was worried about that, too. So I mocked something hypothetical up in Photoshop to see how it would look. And with some brightly colored shoes and accessories, I think it looks pretty fab:

All garments and shoes from Shopstyle.com, fans from AsianIdeas.com

(That’s my actual dress in the photo, but I blurred it out, because I want to keep it a surprise for the time being. That’s also my actual brooch bouquet, which is still in progress.)

I was so excited to tell the girls my final decision, and they were excited to start shopping! I feel good about my decision and I’m confident that I won’t change my mind again.

How long did it take you to decide on bridesmaid dresses?

Um, hello. I think we’re having the same wedding. Welllll almost. You may have convinced me to let my girls wear different colored shoes though- I was originally thinking of doing all plum in the same shoe to tie it all together… but yeah, grey ish/taupe dresses with mustard yellow, pale pink, plum and navy accents, and they guys in grey-ish taupe vests with a darker grey pant. Gotta find a way to make my man stand out though- he’s not up for wearing a jacket!
Love your dress choices btw, I’m going to have to head over to shopstyle and see if I can hunt them down!

I love how it all comes together! I think it is so cool when mismatched things can come together so well. I wish I was better at stuff like this, I don’t have quite the vision so I stuck with the same dresses for all the girls and just letting them “jazz” the dress up how they want with brooches and things. I decided on the dresses the first time looking because I am way too indecisive and if I kept looking I would overwhelm myself!

I told my girls to look for mistmatched grey dresses too! So far it has been a bit stressful - my girls don’t seem to understand that I don’t really care what they wear, i just want them to feel fabulous! They keep asking, “is this colour okay”, “what about this length”, “am I going to match with everyone else”. It has been hard to get the concept of intentionaly mismatched dresses accross to them. But, I’m sure they will look great when the day comes.

Love love the grey! I am also doing grey bridesmaids dresses, and my fi is going to wear a grey suit and the gm’s are going to do back with grey ties. After my MOH tried on a grey convertable dress I picked out as an option, she was like done, I love this one! So it was decided. Grey dresses w/ pop of green fugi mums for bouquets. I love how you are doing the brooch bouquet and bright accessories!

I love it! We decided to do different gray dresses too - except with yellow and green as accents. But, where did the groomsmen find their outfits? We want gray and casual, but don’t want the guys to have to buy a whole new suite.

My girls will have the same dresses, but I want them assert their personality in other ways. Their hair, jewelry, and shoes are completely up to them. I wan the bridal party to look like a group (which the matched dresses will achieve), but I don’t want them to feel like clones because they aren’t. I think some rings, broaches, bracelets, hair accessories, and interesting shoe choices will bring out their personalities wonderfully.

Sloth, I love your posts :) I’m so excited to see your wedding to come together!

I just wanted to say I love the grey, and I love the way you did your mock up with all the bits and pieces and the garden-esque background!

I love this idea! Mismatched bridesmaids are awesome and I am developing a whole new appreciation for the color gray.
