Mrs. Prairie Dog's Picture
Mrs. Prairie Dog, Cincinnati Age and Occupation: 24, Program Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, PhD/Biomedical Engineer Engagement Date: December 18, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Glendale Lyceum About Me: I'm a pilgrim soul of a girl with a house full of books and a coffee addiction that could slay Juan Valdez. My life is a whirl of grammar correction, good music, glue-gunning, and two pets named Hazel and Winston Churchill. About Mrs. Prairie Dog

Recap: Like a dress/lose a dress, find the dress again, and now the final installment: in which I road trip with my mother and great-aunt to Chambersburg, PA, home to the last store in the country that has this dress in my size.

J & B Bridals was bustling. The Saturday clientele was half prom-goers, half brides-to-be, and I worked my way past both to get to the front desk. Gun-shy from my last experience, I was already feeling a little overwhelmed.

There I met Jami, who had originally emailed me. When I told her I had an appointment, and then my name, she clapped in excitement. She said she had been excited all day for me to see the dress. Her enthusiasm was so genuine that it soothed my uneasiness right away. I don’t know about you, but I can smell falseness a mile away, and it is very off-putting. Let me tell you: there is nothing fake about Jami or her sweet parents, who run the store.

“It probably won’t fit,” I said, rambling. “It’s a bridal size 10, right? And that might be pushing it.”

I thought I would feel self-conscious in the fitting room, because I had both times before. And also, because Jami is, like, six-feet tall and blonde and gorgeous.

“Oh geez,” I said, examining the dress on the hanger. “Those arm holes look really small.”

Jami laughed. “I think you think you’re bigger than you are.”

That is when I knew that Jami was an angel sent from heaven, just for me.

So the dress went over my head, and I slid my hair to the side. I heard a soft whoosh, the zzzpp noise that you hope to hear.

“Wow,” Jami said. “I don’t think you would even have to get it altered except a hem.” I glanced at myself. This dress, the last of its kind, fit like it was made for me. Tight enough to support me, loose enough to be comfortable. For the first time in my bridal experience, I walked out of the fitting room smiling.

As much as I liked the dress, I still tried on two more. I wanted comparison, and also, there are so many gorgeous dresses at J & B, I couldn’t resist. My great-aunt, who has almost impossibly high standards for garments, was charmed by the selection. And get this: I liked the second and third dresses too! I was not a freak!

Afterward, I put the first dress back on. My dress. I studied myself in the mirror and realized that, while it was possible for me to find other dresses I would like, they were never going to be this dress. “I mean, I have to get it,” I said to my mom, who cried when Jami put a veil on me.

Done and done. Another mother of the bride waiting for her daughter whispered, “I was hoping you would pick that one.” The next girl that came in for her appointment appraised my dress. “That is so different,” she said. “But I like it. It suits you.” Three different people mentioned that they thought the dress somehow “matches” my engagement ring.

Everyone in that whole store was overwhelmingly kind that it was almost surreal. The experience was absolutely worth the discomforting prior experiences.

I guess the point is this: follow your gut, even if you have to follow it all the way to Chambersburg, PA. And if you have been disappointed by prior gown experiences, it might be worth the trek anyway. I don’t think I could ever say enough kind things about J & B Bridal, who absolutely made my dress shopping experience in a single afternoon.

One more thing (peace out, PDog)

You scrolled down to look for a picture, didn’t you? (I do it too.) I’m reluctant about showing it off pre-wedding, so I’ll pony up one picture. But not of the front or of me in it.

I Stalked My Dress All the Way to Pennsylvania. : wedding cincinnati wedding dress Backofd backofd

I love this dress, and I love that it carries a story now. Did you have a gown shopping experience that you loved?

I am soooo thrilled that you finally had a great experience. I had one HORRIBLE dress shopping experience that totally soured me and made me not want to look at dresses for a while. But ultimately where I bought my dress had the nicest, most sincere staff ever! People who really love their job! That makes such a huge difference!!

This dress looks sooo classy and elegant! Glad you found the perfect one for you! (Thanks for the pic too… I would have been so bummed not to see something, but just showing the back is like perfect suspense, but gives you a bit of an idea)

I love your dress. I had already gotten my dress when I saw a few in this type of style in a magazine (how the lace extends past the dress in the back), made me wish I would have waited!

We went on a family trip to Gettysburg ages ago and my niece got sick. We took her to the hospital in Chambersburg and the people there were so nice. I always think of that when I see Chambersburg mentioned anywhere.

@vtbride2011: i’m so glad you like the suspense! i feel bad not posting pictures of me in it (esp. since ms. panther has been regaling us with gorgeous photos of hers…)! and yes, having a good experience (with my mom and great-aunt there) was so special.

@paw: LOL…i wouldn’t hold out on you completely! but, i’m sure anyone could totally google “alita graham” and find it, haha

AMAZING! I’m glad you went after it!!

I carried mine through NYC, Penn Station and on a commuter train in an absolute MONSOON last March. Then I WON a pair of Christian Louboutins that matched perfectly in an absolutely ridiculous contest for Wedding Central.

I think the hard won items with a story are what make this a journey, an experience and super memorable!

Congrats on the BEAUTIFUL gown! Can’t wait to see you in it!

I love your story! I invisioned my parents and closest girlfriends with me on the day I went to try on dresses. However, that didn’t happen! I live 2,200 miles away and my wedding was 5 months out! So I made an appointment to just try on silhoutte’s and I intented to find my dress when I visited my parents a month later. Luckily my mother-in-law-to-be was able to come along. The second dress was the one, and she cried and told me she’s so thankful for me and thankful her son found me! Even though it wasn’t the plan, it ended up connecting my mother-in-law-to-be and I and made a sweet memory for us both!

I stalked my dress too. I found it online but started trying on other dresses because the brand was not sold at any stores near me. I almost bought a dress I tried on at a store. Then I went online and saw that one again and knew that I HAD to find a way to try it on. I called every store in 500 mile-radius from me, plus stores near my sister, plus stores near another friend my size, and finally found a store that had the sample…a 3.5 hour drive away. I carted myself there the next Saturday, put it on, knew it was for sure the ONE, and bought it. Quickest bridal appointment ever! :)
