Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.
About Mrs. Brooch

Remember my recent post on bouquet inspiration and our first meeting with our florist?  Well, we had our meeting, and it was bittersweet. Sweet because we finally got to talk about the flowers we wanted and finally began to see the vision of our day take form; bitter because making our dreams match our budget was a long stretch. Really long.

See, I had always imagined we’d have tall centerpieces that looked something like this:

We wouldn’t have all tall centerpieces, though. I KNEW that’d be too expensive. We’d mix the tall with shorter ones, like this wedding did:

Meeting Our Florist and Coming Back to Reality : wedding arlington flowers Coogan 011 Coogan-01

I even considered the idea of having clusters, like this:

Source

Well, it turns out everything we wanted would have cost a fortune, and we can’t get it all. The first thing to go were the tall centerpieces we envisioned. Ugh.

The thing is: I’m not picky. I don’t even care what kinds of flowers we have. I just wanted a few tall centerpieces because I think our venue needs that. Our venue is grand, and we needed something visually pleasing for the reception.

I guess the florist started to see the disappointment in my face, and we made a deal. It turns out the time of year we’re getting married (the spring) is my saving grace, because of cherry blossoms. They’re abundant in this area and she promised if they were in bloom, half of our tables would have tall, cherry blossom centerpieces. YAY!

It’s a good thing cherry blossoms are pink, because otherwise we might have a problem. Since they are one of our colors, and they stand tall, I don’t mind adjusting our vision to include this popular springtime flower. Who knows? Cherry blossoms might look BETTER than roses would have!

Of course, as soon as the meeting was over I ran home to Google “Cherry Blossom Centerpieces.” The result got me kind of excited, too! Let’s just hope they’re in bloom, because (I have to check with the florist, but) I think the alternative is curly willows.

As for the clusters—they’re doable. Yippee! Our florist, who also happens to own a farm, is going to pick fresh flowers from her garden and fill our vases with bouquets of the same flower! I CANNOT wait to see this come to life. I’ve been dreaming about it, for at least a year now!

And the buffet and escort table displays? Well, they’ll have to be DIY. The mantel flowers, outdoor flowers, and any others will have to be, too. Am I upset? Not in the least. I am extremely happy we can at least afford bouquets and centerpieces.

How did your first meeting with the florist go? Are you getting all the flowers you wanted for your wedding? If not, what kind of compromises did you make?

Yay for cherry blossom centerpieces!!! Sometimes our budget gets in the way of our overall vision, but with a little work, there is often a good compromise. May all your wedding dreams come true :)

Love it! I’m also a D.C. bride and using Growing Wild Florist. It sounds like you are too. I was very excited about transforming my venue using small clusters like the one you have an picture of after meeting with our florist. I hope that the cherry blossoms are in bloom for you. I know how temperamental they can be.

The cherry blossoms are unique and very pretty. I wanted tall centerpieces too so we used curly willow and dark red carnations. Pretty inexpensive!

Aaaah Cherry Blossoms for DC/Nova bride is just PERFECT! I love it!

Although if it doesn’t work out, have you considered maybe light pink or peach carnations? They look pretty all bunched up together.

@Miss Brooch because how many florists in the D.C. area really talk about picking flowers from their garden? I’m excited because of that aspect. :)

Miss Brooch - I used Growing Wild too and we absolutely LOVED IT. I have her a lot of free reign to do what she thought was best based on some loose guidelines I gave her (color, texture, etc.) and she came up with beautiful EVERYTHING. The flowers, somehow, looked even better in photos than they did in real life.

And, I also got married at Oxon Hill, so stop copying me! :)

I’m loving the look of the tall cherry blossoms! I had wanted tall centerpieces too, but as you may have notice we steered far from that. We couldn’t afford them :( I was hoping to use a bunch of different wild flowers but we all know how that went.

OMG stop stealing my thoughts! We JUST got a quote from a DC metro florist (based out of leesburg since that’s where our reception venue is) and I almost had a heart attack. It was triple what we had budgeted for, and my simple hand tied single type of flower bouquet was going to cost an amount that I’m flabergasted by.

I knew flowers would be nuts. I knew flowers in DC metro was going to be doubly nuts. But oh my. We also have a grand venue, and it needs bigger displays to fill the room so we are stuck. Stress or not DIY is looking better and better, but we aren’t flower people.

Cherry blossoms symbolize love & romance in Chinese culture, so they’re very apt.
