The Dress, Tears Not Included

November 18th, 2010 @ 2:21 pm by Ms. Sloth

First I fell for a ruffly princess dress, but it was too fancy for our garden venue. Then I bought a prom dress for a steal, but I wasn’t 100% sure about if it was the one. Then, in a moment of frustration and weakness, I bought a wedding gown that I ended up regretting, big time.

And then, I finally found a dress that I actually love. But I was a tease, hive, and I didn’t show it to you right away. But it’s been a few months, and I’m still in love with the dress, so I think the time is right for the big reveal.

Introducing the Galina WG3165:

Okay, okay, it’s a terrible photo taken on a crappy camera phone by a senior citizen bridal shop employee at a strange angle that makes it look like the dress is ankle-length instead of tea-length. But you get the idea, right?

Okay, fine. Here’s the designer photo:

Yay! It’s flirty, it’s vintage-inspired, and it’s perfect for our fairly casual garden wedding. It will look adorable with my $15 shoes and the birdcage veil I plan on making. I won’t need anyone else to help me when I have to pee. It was very affordable. And the shape is perfect for my body!

However, even though I’m thrilled with my final choice, I have to say this as a public service for the hive: there was no moment. There were no tears. There was no choir of angels. There were no gasps of delight or giddy giggling fits. I was alone in the shop with nobody but a little old lady who told me that I looked beautiful in it, but she was trying to make a sale and she’d said the same thing about the other ten dresses I tried on that day. I had a good feeling when I tried the dress on, but it wasn’t a transcendent experience; it was more of a relief that my dress shopping ordeal was finally over.

So, here are some words of wisdom: you may never have the moment. There may not be “the one.” You may never try on a dress that makes your mother tear up, or that makes your friends’ jaws hit the floor. And it’s okay if that doesn’t happen. Just find something that fits. Fits your body, fits your personality, fits your venue, fits your budget.

Was your dress “the one?”

Aw man, say it ain’t so. I’ve tried on so many wedding dresses and have not had “THE” moment. A few I’ve really liked and I know will be perfectly lovely for the wedding. My friend was finally like you may not have the moment.

I curse you Say Yes to the Dress and the unrealistic expectations I now have.

I love it!! I’m so glad you found something you love, even if it didn’t give you the ever-elusive “moment.”

I’m so glad you wrote this! The dress looks great on you, but my dress shopping had no ‘the one’ moment either: it was practical and pretty and it worked. So happy I’m not the only one!

I had the exact same experience as you. No tears, no group hugs, no jaws dropping. No sense of “the one”. However, I did find a beautiful dress that flattered me and fit the budget and venue…and it’s a Galina as well!

It IS perfect! You look gorgeous, and you’ve got that “The Dress” glow! Even if you’re not crying. ;-)

I didn’t have a “moment” either. I know that I picked the right dress but there were definitely no tears or giggles. My sister and best friend were with me and they both loved the dress but didn’t cry either. At first I was a little disappointed, but I got over it quickly. I blamed it on a Say Yes to the Dress marathon I had seen the previous day.

I think that your dress looks beautiful on you!

Gorgeous dress. So perfect for u.

I didnt have the moment either. A lot of dresses actually looked good on me, and I felt amazing in them (yes in aware some people might kill me for saying that). And my mom, in law, and sister were no help either bc they liked them all. And it didn’t help that the dresses were all diff styles- ballgown a line mermaid etc. In the end- I went w the dress that I knew my Fi would love, and that I felt grgeous in. And now- one month later, waiting for it to come on- I’ve been thinking and dreaming ab it nonstop. Guess that’s a sign that I choose the right one :)
