The Dog (And Cat) of Marriage

November 19th, 2010 @ 11:38 am by Mrs. Prairie Dog

(Title pilfered from one of my favorite short story collections…and if anyone knows it, we are instant beffies.)

In a weird way, our marriage began with this thing:

The Dog (And Cat) of Marriage : wedding cincinnati pets relationships Livingi livingi

A 10 year-old (now almost 13!), 3-legged cat named Hazel.

Parents of human babies will probably laugh at this…but adopting Hazel made us feel like a family instead of a couple. When we got her, we’d already been together almost 6 years, but something is different when you share the responsibility of a living creature…especially one who was still healing from a traumatic accident and surgery. Watching my long-beloved boyfriend pace the vet’s waiting room, doze off with the cat curled up on his stomach, coo at her in a baby voice when he thinks I’m asleep…well, I fell in love with him in a whole new way.

In the midst of our engagement, we adopted a dog of our very own.

Meet Winston Churchill: 4 years old, 26 pounds, 4 ounces.

The Dog (And Cat) of Marriage : wedding cincinnati pets relationships Summer summer+

Quiet as a mouse, paws two sizes too big for his body, and blinded by cloudy cataracts. He owned me, completely, from first glance. I felt like our love doubled, again, after he came to live with us. Even the occasional trials of having a pet help as grow as a couple.

I think you can learn a thing or two about marriage from owning a pet. As far as I can tell, our pets don’t understand promises or apologies or sweet nothings. They also doesn’t expect much: just to be loved and cared for, even in the simplest of ways. Maybe our relationships could be enriched by taking the approach we take with our furbabies. Forget intentions, complications, forget the words that we say: what do we do?

*I’d like to note that these two incredibly loving pets are adopted from shelters. If you are considering a new pet, please consider if a rescue pet could be right for you. They have so much love to give, and our little family is a testimony to that.

Did pets help you bond as a couple? Are you kind of obsessed with you furbabies like we are? Tell me about them!

It is strange to say, but I feel exactly the way you do. Our dogs united us. I do feel like a family now. AND I can actually tell what our parental roles will be since we raised 2 puppies. :)

We have a 3 legged cat as well and he is the biggest sweetie ever! As a kitten he was a barn cat but since he had such a great personality and his disability we adopted him to make sure he would have a great life.

Pets do make you feel like a real family with the responsibility, worrying about them if they are sick, etc.

This made me cry! You two are so sweet–I really respect people who save animals–all 3 of my cats are saved off the streets! Best of luck as you plan your wedding and begin your marriage!

OMG Totally obsessed with our dogs. The photo of Winston laying on top of you is every day life in our house. I think that is the only way our boys know how to sleep.

Seriously, our dogs don’t even know they are dogs anymore. I am pretty sure they think they are little kids. And it doesn’t help that Mr. M. carries them around like they are. ;)

I feel the same way. We adopted our dog almost 2 years ago as a puppy. We went from a couple that lived together to feeling like a family.

I love this story! We have two adopted cats and we love them like they were our own human babies. My fiance even calls himself daddy when talking to our cats.

We frequently joke that we love our dog more than we love each other. He’s had hip surgery and food allergies and destroyed more things than I care to remember but the way he loves to lick my ears still makes me melt every time. We’re such suckers!

We adopted a kitten together and he is our baby just like yours are! he has totally brought us closer together and we too feel more like a family with him :)
We also foster cats so our cat always has a friend around, if anyone is considering adopting but is worried about the cost or commitment please consider fostering, it’s great!

oh my gosh could they be any cuter? I feel totally the same - co-adopting kittens felt more solidifying than moving in together or getting engaged.

SO true! Although we didn’t rescue our puppy until about a month after our wedding, having her has definitely enriched both our lives and our relationship. I’m so proud that we’ve yet to have a single fight over the dog!

My husband had his dog before I came into the picture, and I think that my equal obsession with dogs definitely helped move the relationship along! He credits me for helping teach the dog to cuddle, and our dog is now a champion snuggle-bunny. It was also a great way to bond with his family, who all also treat their dogs like kids.

Its funny, but our dog definitely made us feel more like a family. Seeing my boy loving on Lando made me love him even more! It made our home feel more complete, and it was amazing. But, at the same time, it also made us realize we don’t want children! Training her was terrible, we were awful at it and had no patience. In the six years we’ve had her, we realize more every day that we are fine with our dogs, and that this is what we always want our family to look like. Adding a second one to the mix this year has been great!

We got our cat a year after living together. She’s definitely united us and made our apartment feel more like a home, and our relationship more like a family. We talk to her and for her all the time. (What, everyone doesn’t make up voices for their pets and converse with them through their SO? Just us, then? Ah well…)

I love it and I totally agree! I had a cat before we got together and my fiancee was kind of the “intruder” when he moved in. But then we adopted our dog, Shelby, and it def. feels like we are more of a family now, even with the cat. We even call each other “mom” and “dad”, lord help us, we’re that couple lol!

We got our first pup 2 years into our relationship and 6 months after moving in together. You are so right I fell for my FI all over again because of that puppy.

Now we’ve got three and we’ve learned so much about our relationship and ourselves because of those pups.

Yes, getting our dog and 2 cats definitely has united us. We love them so much and they show us what it is to love unconditionally. All 3 of them are strays so they know what its like not to be loved and it makes them all the more grateful. Also - I am going to advocate for shelter dogs/cats as well!!

It’s totally true! We got a ferret together and when he was out running on the floor we’d say things like “go get daddy” or “come to mommy” and that’s kind of when it hit that things were serious between us.

OMG your kitty looks just like our Lulu - she showed up at our front door when she was 8 months old and pregnant! We already had two cats but couldn’t turn her away. We found homes for all 6 of her babies and now cannot imagine our life without her. She is such a love. And I agree, seeing my fiance with the cats and how he treats them has definitely shown me a different side of him and it makes me love him more.
