Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Then and Now: Brooch Edition

November 19th, 2010 @ 1:37 pm by Mrs. Brooch

Growing up, my mom always put me in the best outfits, complete with a hair bow and pearl bracelet. I loved it! Dressing up was my thing. :)

How cute am I?

Here I am in my annual Christmas Day outfit (I told you I am a Tennessee Vols fan):

There were also my dancing outfits to dress up in! I took jazz, ballet, and tap. More than dancing, I loved our outfits for the big shows!

So I might have started off a very stylish young gal, but I fell into an awkward stage (don’t we all?). This picture is the perfect example of this time in my life:

Then and Now: Brooch Edition : wedding arlington then and now Sara20003 Sara20003

I remember PUTTING STICKERS on this shirt to give it a little something (no, this wasn’t a fashion designer in the making, it was a poor kid trying to make something out of a plain tee shirt)! I also wrote “Sports” on the front with pen, because the stickers were baseballs, basketballs, etc. Really? Yes, really.

I also remember replacing the laces of my sneakers with the laces from my roller blades, hence the bright pink! Oh God! Check out those floral leggings, too! Who remembers ’em?

Here are a few more photos from my awkward stage:

I think that’s a sports bra under my spaghetti strap tank. Haha!

Then and Now: Brooch Edition : wedding arlington then and now Sara20005 Sara20005

This is classic! I loved, loved, loved this Pepe Le Pew shirt. Don’t ask me why. Maybe it was the pink glitter? Goodness! And what’s up with the scrunchy on my arm? Fashion statement? Eh. Not really.

You’d think looking back on graduation day from middle school, one might feel proud. How can I with such a hideous outfit?

Then and Now: Brooch Edition : wedding arlington then and now Sara20007 Sara20007

Wow. Fur with open toed shoes! What was I thinking? It’s pretty sad, because this was High School! Eek!

Eventually, my sense of style improved, but there’s no shortage of photos like these.

Oh, wait! You don’t believe me? I did get better, promise…

Here’s proof:

Actually, I have to be honest. Not much has changed about me between then and now. I’m still a pretty bad dresser. I need to get back that spunk I had as a kid—that, or have my mom buy all my clothes! Haha!

Have you always been a good/bad dresser? Or has your penchant for style changed over the years?

I’m a firm believer that every one has a phase of approximately three years that they wish they could burn ALL photos from.

And if people claim they don’t have this life phase… they’re lying to you. Right to your face.

I like the idea of being able to look back on what i wore and potentially laugh. there’s pictures of me doing my best punky brewster impression on family vacations, standing infront of some great european monument or something, and I’m really proud of that. embrace the stange fashion statements of the past.

i used to rock the sports bra over a v-neck baby tee (back when they were short-short) with overalls.

You had me cracking up throughout this entire post - I never had floral leggings, but I certainly had me some floral denim!

@Mrs. Starfish: Haha! How funny is it that we dressed better at 5! So sad! @Mrs.MedinaJr: Aw! Thank you :) @jacquelyn: I LOVED that costume! I had others, too! @JillBill: So true! @thequaintbride: I LOVED Punky!! @Mrs. Husky: Glad my terrible fashion sense could make you laugh! I get a kick out of these photos, too! The floral leggings are the WORST! Even funnier to me is that I wore that outfit on a day I had to do a presentation! What was I thinking?? HAHA!

This is hilarious! Oh floral print leggings. I definitely had some of those. Mine were super awesome because they had stirrups.

Hilarious post! Was and am a bad dresser. I thought I looked wonderful in all my old photos and all they do is make me laugh. I bet the same will happen in 10-20 years from now. Haha! :-)

Um, I’m almost positive I had those floral leggings when I was a kid.
I wish I could say I’ve improved… but I’m not so sure! Hahaha

That is really adorable that you put stickers on your shirt to spice it up, and wrote “sports” because they were sports stickers. That just says you were a creative and sweet little girl!
