Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.
About Mrs. Brooch

Miss Elephant’s post about her centerpieces inspired me to dig a little deeper into the notes I took during our meeting with the florist. When I created my inspiration file for bouquets, I had no idea what flowers exactly that would translate into. If you remember, I didn’t know what half the flowers in the bouquets I liked were!

The florist knew what all of them were, of course! She also knew if they would be in season, how expensive they would be, and whether they would work for my bouquet. After discussing my ideas, we decided my bouquet will be medium sized (I don’t like gigantic bouquets) and mostly green.

Remember me mentioning that my mom hated her all-white bouquet? She said she was jealous of all the pretty colors in her bridesmaids’ bouquets, which is why I opted for my bouquet to be my favorite color. :)

Here are the flowers I want, ranging in order of favorites, starting with pink ranunculus:

I didn’t know what they were called, but now I do—scabiosa pods! They’re not really in season, but the florist made a special note in floral-description packet that says, “bride loves scabiosa pods.” Yay!

Soft pink tulips (they’re scattered in this bouquet):

Green Cymbidium orchids:

The Cymbidium orchids have a question mark next to them in the description of my bouquet, probably because the florist is going to see if they work. They’re much more exotic than the other flowers mentioned, and sometimes the center can be purple in color, which may not work well with our color scheme. However, I’d love to have just one or two in my bouquet, simply because they are the flowers we’ll be using for boutonnieres!

Mr. B’s boutonniere will be a white Cymbidium orchid with green berry accents. Kind of like this, but with berries:

The groomsmen will have green Cymbidium orchids:

The corsages will be made using Cymbidium orchids, too (some green, others pink):

Pulling all of this together was really good therapy for me! It’s really helped me visualize our day. Flowers are such an important part of the decor, in my opinion, because they add color and visual interest. I’m thrilled with all the details we worked out with the florist and cannot wait to see all these blossoming beauties on our wedding day. It’s too bad they don’t last longer!

Oh, and reading all of your comments about how beautiful cherry blossoms will be made me feel really good. So thanks. :)

What kinds of flowers will be in your bouquet? What flowers will be used for the boutonnieres?

Such pretty combinations!

I’m not there yet in my planning, but even though they’ll be slightly out of season, I’d love to carry blue/purplish Hydrangeas. As for the men-folk, the only idea I have is for my groom and it would be to have him wear a bright orange rose with possibly a matching orange bow-tie. Still have some time, so we shall see. :)

What a great mix!

I love ranunculus and anemones so I’d like to think about using those, along with some garden roses. I love the dreamy, ethereal look of peonies, but since they are super expensive, I’m not sure.

I love those cymbidium orchids! They make such awesome bouts!

Those flowers sound like a winning combination! Ranunculas and sahara roses with tulips - dreamy!

I enjoy the cymbidium orchids as well. I believe that I will be using Turk’s Cap lilies or Red Spider Lilies in my bouquet. . .Still have yet to decide the accent flowers that I want. . .

I am using mostly beads with a few white roses. My mom was upset with her white bouquet also, so as part of our ceremony we are giving both the mom’s bouquets of flowers. My mom is getting the bouquet she always wanted, although it took me some finagling to get it out of her without her knowing what it was for.
