About Mrs. Pencils

Many bees have come before me, but I had to dive in. I have far too many embarrassing secrets to share, so I thought I’d go with two that I’m hoping some of you will relate to!

The first, and it should come as no surprise if you read my personal blog and know that Mr. Pencils manages nearly all of the domestic duties of the house, is that in my personal life, I’m incredibly messy and I have a hard time responding to emails in a timely manner. In my work life, I’m on the ball. Emails? Within hours, 48 at the most. My desk? Organized, color coded, file foldered. My Outlook? Every single email has its own folder and I have a task list with deadlines, reminders and flags. Uber Type A.

Yet, as soon as I get home, I seem to lose my focus and drive and I become quite messy—not dirty—just really, really messy. I’m ashamed to show you, but take a look at the image below for my proof:

My second secret is not such a secret if you knew me in high school (which would be odd if you did).

I had braces from age 15 to age 17—from sophomore year to my birthday in October of senior year. If you remember high school at all, you remember that having something like braces is pretty much social suicide. Yet, I didn’t need them until after most of my peers had straightened their teeth (when I was 13, my dentist told my parents I had perfect teeth and would never need orthodontics. Um, someone revoke his degree).

I could care less today that I was a metal mouth during a great deal of high school, and I think it helped me develop a resilience and love of difference. This is pretty clear below, given that during my years wearing braces, I also thought it was really cute to wear children’s shirts (I’m wearing a Ninja Turtles shirt below) and pile on as many bracelets as I could (how did I even type and write weighed down with the entire stock of Claire’s?!).

Anyone recognize my gorgeous friend Alison from my wedding? She’s currently in med school, kicking bootay!

I have far too many secrets I could share, but I’ll stop there. Thanks for letting me expose the skeletons for a bit, hive!

Yay, a post from Pencils :) I share your same messy at home problem! I don’t know what it is but as soon as work/school is over, my usually uber organized self does a 180 and turns into a super messy person, it’s so frustrating sometimes, especially for my fiance :)

I think you are my twin - I have the same messy problem!! In college, friends from class would come to my apartment and be so confused because I was hyperorganized in class and work, they didn’t understand how I was so messy!!

Ha! Aww Pencils… I’m a secretly (disastrously) messy person with clothes. Just. cannot. put laundry. away. Totally feel ya on the braces too, because in 6th grade I got glasses and braces within 2 weeks. Me = giant nerd. Also, I had to wear braces for 6 years, so I had them through to the middle of my senior year! :D

Aw, Pencils! I had to wear braces in middle school (and, actually, might have to get them AGAIN) so don’t feel bad! Also, this made me laugh — you are too funny: “how did I even type and write weighed down with the entire stock of Claire’s?” :)

PENCILS OMG! I also went through a phase where I thought it was really cute and funny in an ironic way to wear children’s shirts. I had this bright, bright, bright pink t-shirt that had glittery pictures of all the Disney princesses on it with a caption that read “I’m the prettiest princess of all.” I bought at the Disney store and LOVED it and wore it regularly throughout my freshman year OF COLLEGE. What the eff was I thinking?!?!?
