About Mrs. Prairie Dog

We met with a few photography teams pretty early on in our planning, after obsessively stalking their online portfolios. At first the cost of photography felt like a gut-punch, but I’ve since come to understand why they’re priced the way they are. However, it’s still a lot of money, and I wanted to be thorough with our decision. The questions we came up with yielded a ton of great responses and really helped us get to know each photographer.

Assuming that the photog’s website detailed the packages/prices/digital rights/etc., these were our questions:

  1. How long have you been practicing photography?
  2. How many weddings have you shot in the past year?
  3. Do you have any formal education? (Not a deal-breaker, but a plus.)
  4. How would you describe your style?
  5. Are your shots similar to or different from one another? (when interviewing a two-person team of photogs)
  6. What would you consider your greatest strength as a photographer?
  7. What happens if you fall ill? What is the back-up plan?
  8. Who are your personal favorite wedding photographers?
  9. How do you manage if the bride and groom are awkward and not photogenic? (Like us.)
  10. What’s the average turn-around post-wedding?
  11. Will you Photoshop every picture until we are much better looking? He would like to be edited until he is Christian Bale (in Batman), and I would like to be edited as Zooey Deschanel’s face on Christina Hendricks’ body. Thank you.

Admittedly, some of these questions might be a little much. (And the last one is a joke.) But it’s a lot of money! I wanted to get inside these peoples’ brains, figure out what they’re all about. We came up with a handful of wonderful options.

So…if you’re feeling a little intimidated by deciding where all that money goes, feel free to pick and choose from my list.

How did you make your photography decision?

we asked similar questions {Mr. Ostrich also has a major man-crush on Christian Bale, and I want to be Marion Cotillard!}….but seriously, I think what helped us the most was asking to see a few examples of a full day’s shooting. a lot of times, we only see a handful of great photos from photographers. But when we’re shelling out all that $$$, we want to have wayyy more than a handful of great shots that we want to purchase. best of luck!

Well, although I agree that photography is not a place to skrimp on…we just didn’t have a great deal of money to spend.

So we hit the pavement asking our friends, family, and other vendors who they had used. Word of mouth can be a bride’s best friend (good advice, I swear). Our DJ who is also a friend recommended our photographer. I would only consider people who had a portfolio…I mean come on, hiring a photographer without seeing their work is like choosing a menu without eating it, or better yet, telling your bridal consultant to suprise you w/ a wedding dress the day of.

Our photographer had an amazing portfolio and he was down to earth. Unfortunately (and this is the reasoning for my lack of comments lately…just a little down) although he was great at taking photos, he needed a lot of directing as to how to set us up…which I didn’t notice until we got our pictures back.

My husband and I hate being in front of the camera and requested candids…we got a lot of posed photos (which made us look uncomfortable). I was so in the “let it ride” moment that day that I convinced myself it would all work out…eesh; not so much.

So I would suggest (if you’re like us or not) to bring actual photos of what you want. I mean, us brides put together inspiration boards and color swatches…why not a collage of poses/candids that you love? We spoke w/ our photographer about everything…stressed every detail…but I think it’s important to bring a visual aid…which we didn’t.

I’m not furious because it is partially our fault and he is a great guy; just disappointed, espcially when all of these girls here have fantastic photos.

So long story short…advice: word of mouth = happiness (90% of the time)….SHOW inspiriation!

I wish I had this list when I questioned my photographers! We found one we like, but these questions would have been helpful.

I pretty much fell in love with my photographer after seeing some friend’s wedding pics on FB. I had already seen his work, but when I saw the album I went crazy over it. He was actually the first vendor i booked for the wedding. I didn’t even set the date until I made sure that he was available. So you see, he could have answered all those questions in arameic and it really wouldn’t have made any difference.

We chose our photog solely by reviewing blogs. We met with ours as a formality, but we knew we wanted to work with her as soon as we saw her work.
