Twinkles Toes Jumped the Gun

November 23rd, 2010 @ 12:25 pm by Mrs. Panther

Oh, hello. It’s just me here, the Shoe Monster. Just hangin’ out, thinking about all the things I could own if I didn’t insist on being the Atlanta version of a broke Carrie Bradshaw.

Twinkles Toes Jumped the Gun : wedding shoes westport 12 1

(Cookie Monster, Studded pumps, Platform ankle boots, Platform oxford)

Now that I have (most of) my jewelry and a hairpiece, and they’ve been deemed fabulous by Monte, I can’t help wanting to keep on truckin’ in the Wedding Day Look saga. And I’ve been holding off on something very important: Duh, the shoes.

As I’ve mentioned, my dress is being made with a custom hem, so when I ordered the gown, I had to tell them what heel height I wanted to wear. It was a high-pressure moment, and the sales associates kept telling me I’d regret it if uncomfortable shoes ruined my wedding day, and…I folded.

This is very unlike me. I a) do not usually fold, and b) LOVE HIGH HEELS. But nonetheless, I told them 3.5″ and went on my merry way.

Fast-forward to now. After months of searching, I’ve made one valuable discovery: shoes I like rarely come in heel heights lower than 4″. And another valuable discovery: Because they are so rare (maybe), they sell out fast. And I also just learned today that my dress should be in “very, very soon.” After all this time waiting, am I really going to go try it on without shoes? How will I know what height will really work without trying?!

So, I bought some. Just a few pairs. Just so I can try them. I’m not going to keep them, really.

To fill the glitter quota: Jimmy Choo ‘Laser’ Sandal

At 3 1/4?, this is my safe heel height shoe. And … SPARKLY! I am a magpie. You should know this about me.

To fill the color option quota: Badgley Mischka ‘Xavier’ (White Satin)

Twinkles Toes Jumped the Gun : wedding shoes westport 31 3

The white satin can be dyed, so they could be turquoise, purple, blue … The white tulle, however, cannot be dyed, so that could potentially be a problem (my dress is NOT white). One site lists these as 3 3/4? heels, another lists them as 4? and yet another lists them at 4 1/4?. So we’ll see how the height works out.

To fill the fun embellishment quota: Badgley Mischka ‘Kiwi’ Sandal

Twinkles Toes Jumped the Gun : wedding shoes westport 41 4

OMG, feathers! These are allegedly 3 3/4?

The good news is that two of the pairs are from Nordstrom and one is from Zappos, so they all should be easy to return. Since the wedding is still nine months away, the chances of me finding something I like better are really, really good. So maybe this was a really, really bad idea. Only time will tell, eh?

What do you guys think? Is buying shoes this early a horrible idea, or is it good to have them picked out before your first fitting? Did you have to make tough choices based on heel height?

@Violet Violet: I thought about getting those, too, but I wasn’t sure if they’d be too light in person! Good luck finding them!
@Miss Jaguar: How can anyone resist sparklies?! Looooove.

I bought my 3.5 inch shoes about 6 months early…and then when I tried them on with my dress, I thought they were not “sparkly enough” so I went and ordered 2 more online 4 inch shoes…the 2nd two were not as comfortable as the first two, so I ended up keeping the first pair…plus my alterations lady had already hemmed my dress to accommodate a 3.5 inch heel, so the 4 inch heels threw off the look of the dress

Those feathers are amazing. I want to reach through the screen and touch them! All the shoes are beautiful but the feathers are my favorite by far.

Badgley Mischka! Well, try them all, see what looks best and then never look at another pair of shoes until after the wedding ;D

@kamiie: It’s so complicated, isn’t it? So many factors to consider!
@Mrs. Glasses: That’s my plan for EVERYTHING I do in advance! I don’t let myself look at dresses, or jewelry, or cake toppers, or photographers, or invitations … NO MORE!

@Megan: I’ve seen those!!! There’s a gold pair that’s really hard to find, too, but luckily the colorful ones don’t really fit my color scheme. Phew!

Cute shoes!! I think it’ll be smart to have some options to try on when your dress comes in!

LOVE all! um, I just ordered my shoes yesterday (Badgley Mischkas as well - the Randall in blue!) annnd my wedding is still like 11 months away, lol. I just bought my dress a week ago and I won’t even see it again for MONTHS but I couldn’t stop eyeing the shoes…and there were only 2 pair left in my size, so I bought them from Zappos. I figured, like you, they’ll be easy to return if they don’t work (or, more likely, I’ll decide to keep them anyway…shhh, don’t tell FI!)

Panther, I looove your posts, I can identify so much!!! =)

I bought my Jimmy Choo’s early as well - 8 mths early! I had the heels shaved almost 1/2 an inch. If you have a great cobbler who works on designer shoes often, this can be an option ;) The choices above are lovely x 2 :)

I had so many shoes issues, it’s good to try on sizes with your dress to get the correct heel height, I waited too long and was ordering and returning multiple pairs looking for the perfect height….up until a week before the wedding.
