About Mrs. Gloss

I really hated saying “fiance,” and it never went away but it was really nice to know I wasn’t the only one. Update: I love saying “husband.” :)

Best of the 'Bee - Dropping the F-Bomb… : wedding best of weddingbee maine relationships Finace.jpgimage

I have a hard time dropping the f-bomb (and obviously I mean fiancé)! I always thought I would relish in the days of fiancé-ness, but now that I’m here, I feel pretentious whenever I say it. Usually I can avoid it by simply saying ‘Mr. Gloss’ rather than ‘my fiance’, but for people who don’t know his name, it is hard to avoid! Mostly this happens in work/elevator conversations, when discussing weekend plans, etc. with coworkers who may not know my fiancé’s name.

Before, I would say, “Oh, my boyfriend and I are going to do so and so this weekend,” and now I have to replace that word with fiancé.

Or during introductions—I can’t say, “this is my boyfriend Mr. Gloss,” and I avoid the f-bomb like it’s the plague. So, instead I say, “This is… Mr. Gloss,” usually with an awkward pause to replace where I avoided saying ‘my fiance’.

It’s absolutely not a commitment issue, and I am very excited to be able to say ‘My husband’, I just have a huge problem saying fiancé.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I’m the same way. I keep referring to him as my boyfriend. Some people correct me–I think I’m going to go straight from “boyfriend” to “husband.” Maybe I can just refer to him as “my guy.”

Maybe it’s because it’s a French word??

Me too…I keep calling him my “boyfriend” to this date and we have been engaged for almost 5 months! LOL! It just sounds awkward. :)

I’m trying to enjoy it while I can, even though it is quite awkward to say!

You’ve had a “boyfriend” since forever, you’ll have a “husband” through eternity- this is the one time to call him your “Fiance”!

I find myself saying boyfriend alot too! Fiance just seems too formal or fancy a word.

Although there are some situations i like to drop it in to make myself seem more mature! People always think that im so much younger than i am and when i say something about “My fiance and i” they do a re-evaluation.

I get this! But I do like saying fiancé… it’s actually “husband” I’m weird about–I think I like partner or spouse better.

YES! omg i had the exact same issue, i felt weird or pretencious saying “fiance”! the entire time we were engaged i never got used to it. i would even do the awkward pause and just not classify him has anything, and just say his name ha! but once we were married saying “husband” was no problem at all. I even remember losing him at the cocktail hour and saying “oh no, i’ve lost my husband! has anyone seen my husband?” which of course my family thought was hilarious but to me felt totally natural.

I hated saying fiance too because then people bombarded us with questions about the wedding!

I definitely feel strange using the f word (as I call it) and people close to me know that. I still usually refer to him as my boyfriend if people don’t know his name. I thought I was the only one! Glad to know I’m not alone (actually, he hates the word too and told me when we got engaged that he would not be using the f word).

Wow…I thought I was the only one! I feel so weired saying it, I either avoid it or I exaggerate it because it feels wierd. So funny to find out I’m not the only one :-)

Yes! I hate saying fiance! I don’t know why, but like you mentioned, it just feels incredibly pretentious to me. I still accidentally find myself saying boyfriend and then getting awkward because I have to correct it.

It feels so weird to say fiance, it does sound so pretentious and unreal. I like to over exaggerate the pronounciation, just to lighten the conversation a bit :)

It always bothered me, too! I felt like I was asking someone to congratulate me or inquire about the wedding in some round-about way.

I HATE the word fiance! I usually just use his name if people already know him. He will either call me his gf or his wife, depending on the day. ha

I don’t mind writing it down.. but saying it out loud IS weird. I don’t know what it is. I’ve taken to calling Mr Jag my partner.. which is ridiculous, I know. Ah well, just a few more months before I can move on to hubby. Can’t wait for that!

@DoxieDoll:

Good point. Such a fleeting moment in time.

My *ahem* guy however has NO problem introducing me as his fiancé. Perhaps it’s because he doesn’t feel like he’s reminding all his sad single gfs that she I mean HE’s engaged. (did you catch that?)

Yep, my friends make fun of me because they know I hate saying it. I avoid labeling him as much as I can (and introduce him by name instead). Occasionally I say boyfriend, but that word took time to grow on me, too, because I’m in my mid-40s and it sounds kind of high-school at this point. There has to be a better word!
