Makeup Trial, Part Deux: DIY

November 30th, 2010 @ 1:46 pm by Ms. Sloth

After my first make-up trial left me wanting more, I started contacting local makeup artists to get some information. What I found out shocked me. Maybe I’m naive, but I can’t believe that these people were charging an average of $200 for wedding day makeup (especially when, if I’d liked the first MUA I’d had a trial with, she’d have charged only $50).

Furthermore, everyone I spoke to had a 3 person minimum, which meant that they wouldn’t travel to our site just to do my makeup. I could have them do my bridesmaids’ makeup, but I really can’t afford to pay for everyone, and I don’t want to ask the girls to pay for it themselves.

Feeling frustrated, I decided to see if I could do my makeup myself. Armed with my giant arsenal of rarely-used products and Miss Rainbow’s kick-ass tutorials, I set out to see if I could, as Rainbow says, ace my face. I knew that I probably wouldn’t get professional-caliber results, but I figured that I could look at least as good if not better than I did in my first trial, which, as a reminder, looked like this:

Not bad, but not GOOD. Very average.

So here is what I used:

And, finally, here is the result:

What do you think? I think it’s better than my first trial, and if I practice, maybe I’ll get it to where I’d like to be.

Would you do your own makeup on your wedding day, or would you rather leave it to the pros?

How much did you spend on all that makeup? I guess if you are planning on using it all up, it’s worth it, but if not you may as well go with the expensive makeup artist!

great job! the list of products alone made my head spin and I’m so impressed with how it came out. Very natural but definitely says I’m the bride!

I think it looks awesome! I did my own makeup and it turned out good :) I would go a touch heavier on the eyes though to make sure they pop in pictures!

@Betsy: This is all makeup that I already owned. I didn’t buy anything extra just for the wedding.

You look so fresh faced and young! That Nars Orgasm blush has been my every day blush for years, it looks good on everyone and gives that perfect healthy glow! I personally would go a little bit heavier on the eyes because of pictures, but other than that I think you look gorg!

I’m DIYing my makeup and my friend’s for her wedding (thank God she’s pale, too, lol, so I can just use stuff we already own). I love seeing makeup tutorials, you did a great job!

Your skin looks beautiful! I think you could maybe go with a little bolder color for lips? It looks nice the way it is, but it could really pop (if you wanted it to) Great job though!

you look so beautiful! I had planned on doing my own makeup, but when the morning came around, I just couldn’t make my hands be still enough to apply it, so I had a friend do it, no trial. Fortunately, it turned out great!! :P

WOW! great job, lady! ooh, and you’re using some of my favorite makeup bits - moonbeam and orgasm, to name a few!

i was 99% set to do my own makeup because of exactly what you went through…but at the last minute, a good friend, who’s also a makeup artist, offered to do it.

You look great! So much better than the trial. And now I’m super excited because I own most of those products so I’ll be able to try out the look for myself
