In Which Two Panthers Pick a Ring

November 30th, 2010 @ 5:25 pm by Mrs. Panther

I think it’s about time I share the engagement story, don’t you? Part one, coming at ya.

Mr. Panther and I knew quite a while ago that we wanted to get married in the summer of 2011. Because we wanted to have the ceremony outside, overlooking water of some sort, we knew the date needed to be in the summertime. Mr. Panther didn’t want to wait until 2012, because he thinks the world is going to end on December 21. He wanted to have a little more than five months to enjoy being married before we all die, I guess.

So, at some point around spring 2009, Mr. Panther started saving for a ring. I’m crazy, crazy picky, so he knew he’d be better off getting my input. And luckily for him, I already had one picked out:

But of course that’s not what I ended up with. Come on! We all know that I never end up going with my first instinct, right?

See, as it turns out, Tacori settings are just a little bit overpriced. Shocker, right? And round diamonds are also the most expensive cut. Between those two things, Mr. Panther wasn’t going to be able to afford very much in the stone department after buying the setting. One of my coworkers has a contact at AmericasMart, which is a big market in Atlanta where vendors sell things to stores. On the jewelry floor, you can buy rings and diamonds almost at-cost, without the price hikes you’d get in a jewelry store. When Mr. Panther went in, he realized that if he bought the setting and the diamond there, he could afford a much better quality center stone. Unfortunately, they don’t sell Tacori settings, so he asked me to reconsider my dream ring.

The idea of a nicer diamond was pretty enticing, so I joined him on another visit. Since I knew I wouldn’t find the unique Tacori setting there, I set my sights on a totally new style: the pavé halo. I brought in lots of photos, and AmericasMart had tons of options. After visiting a few different vendors, Mr. Panther pointed out a setting that had everything I wanted—white gold, a very thin pavé band and very low center stone placement. And that was it: The Ring! The setting was meant for a cushion cut diamond, but the brilliant ovals were more sparkly and a little cheaper, so that’s what we went with. Mr. Panther haggled a little bit, got a seriously great deal (it appraised for twice what he paid!), put down a deposit and that was that! Very romantic, isn’t it?

*Swoon* I love my ring. (I don’t know why it looks yellow in that second photo—it’s an F!) Even now, eight months later, I find myself staring at it. But after we bought it at AmericasMart, I couldn’t have it right away. The jewelers needed to set the stone and size the band, and uh, duh, Mr. Panther had to propose. I went home ringless, but so excited.

Next up, how Mr. Panther and I became affianced and I got that sucker on my finger.

Did anyone else pick out your own ring? Do you wish you’d let your man surprise you, or are you glad you sacrificed romance to get exactly what you wanted?

ahh, every one of your posts I can so relate to and now I find that your ring is “almost” the twin of mine (although I got the cushion cut)! =) I did sort of a “compromise” with the picking out of the ring because it was REALLY important to FI for the proposal and the actual ring to be a surprise. so we went shopping about 6 months before he proposed, tried on a whole bunch of styles, talked about our thoughts, and left it at that. I was pretty confident I was getting the dream ring because luckily he liked the same settings as I did during that trip, but he did an even better job than I could have dreamed!

LOVE your ring =)

I inherited my grandmother’s ring, so I always knew I was going to have some say in the process of resetting it. One has to do that type of thing justice. I was also in love with that Tacori setting, but when I tried it on it was WAY to blingy for my hand. Turns out the styles I like visually look weird on my hand, so I am SO glad we went shopping together.

We ended up going with a custom jeweler that a couple of my friends had been to. If you had told me a year ago that I’d be getting the setting I got I would have prob rolled my eyes at you.

We picked out my ring together and I love it! It was so overwhelming, we were both really glad we could do it as a team instead of the pressure of trying to do it alone. Going together also let us negotiate on budget, styles, etc. as we were actually there looking at the rings, instead of trying to do it abstractly some other time.

I picked out my own ring and I am so glad I did, my FH had picked out a engagement/wedding ring in one combo which meant that on the big day I would have to take my ring off give it to him to give back to me at the alter, Uh not happening, the engagement ring needs to have a personal meaning to it along with a separate wedding band to have its own meaning to it. Plus I have 3 girls and I would love to be able to pass my engagement ring on to at least one of them when it is there turn to get married.

My fiance proposed without a ring, so we actually went together to find one the day after we got engaged. For me, that was actually better since I would have not been able to first buy the ring and then patiently waited the proposal (you know, without the nagging part)…

Your setting looks a lot like mine! Except mine is square-shaped. But it has that delicate milgrain, and the teeny little pave diamonds. Yum. Your ring is the hotness!

Love, love, love pave halos, your ring is gorgeous! Tbh, I think that’s the ring I would’ve wanted if I would’ve had an e-ring.

Your ring is soo pretty!

My fiance proposed without a ring. Later on, we went ring shopping and my fiance let me pick the setting.

He chose the center stone…of course he knew I wanted a square cut.

Sometimes I wonder what he would have chosen for me on his own, but he wanted me to have something I really liked and would be happy wearing.

I keep finding that every post I read of yours makes me honestly think we should be friends in real life. Your ring is almost exactly what I have been coveting for myself besides the oval diamond. It is gorgeous and that is pretty much exactly how we are going through this same process.

Mine was a total surprise, but I had shown him pictures of rings I liked earlier (and emailed him the links just in case), so he knew what I wanted. He went so far above and beyond though, and I love the ring. And I loved that the proposal was a complete surprise, because I honestly have no idea when (if?) it would happen. But for a ring as gorgeous as yours, I totally understand forgoing the surprise! Can’t wait to hear about the proposal!

My fiance and I had always talked about how we wanted to get married! We both knew (atleast I knew) that it wouldn’t happen for some time since we were still in school, though. So, I would drag him into jewelry stores and look at engagement rings. Apparently, he payed close enough attention. The day he proposed he had the ring he said I had looked at multiple times! So, I got to pick my ring (unknowlingly) and get the benefit of surprise! :D

My fiance took me to a few local jewelry stores and had me pick a favorite from each store, with the understanding that he would select one of my choices when the time comes. He said I made it pretty easy, it was the only one I took a picture of and I asked to try it on… twice. After the proposal I later found out he went and bought it the very next day :)

Gorgeous ring! Love halos =)
My fiance proposed without a ring and we went ring shopping together. I ended up with one that is very similar to yours, but with a round center stone. We also got a great deal on it, which makes me even happier haha! 6 months later, I still stare at it every single day!

Love it! I also had an eye for the Tacori settings and fell in love with one too…..but the price was too steep for sure. In the end Mr. L did a great job at picking a beautiful ring and we were able to upgrade the stone to a better one. The funny thing is that I’ve had it mistaken for a Tacori a couple times because of the fancy setting.
