I’m not an artist. I’m not a DIY queen. I don’t know how to build furniture. I can’t give you makeup tips or relationship advice. I don’t have any particularly crafty or creative suggestions to bring to the hive, and sometimes that makes me sad.
But, I am damn good at bargain hunting.
And so, hive, I bring to you some fabulous wedding-day ensembles on a budget—any budget!
There’s a look for every kind of wedding here, from an intimate courthouse ceremony to a small garden fête with close friends and family, to a laid-back beach wedding to a formal, elegant affair.
Under $100:
Dress: Charlotte Russe $29.50, Shoes: $15 Store $15.00, Fascination: Modcloth $39.95, Earrings: Forever 21 $3.80, Grand total: $88.48

Early on in my planning, I had determined that somehow, some way, we would have a photo booth at our wedding. Whether we made room in our budget to rent one, or if we made it ourselves and appointed someone to man it with my MacBook, this was something that I really wanted. Mr. FF was slightly more reserved about the idea, however. (I’m sure it had something to do with rental fees…although at the time he claimed that it was an “unnecessary expense.” Hrmph.)

I love this post because I was a clueless, excited, panicked mess when I first got engaged. I made the mistake of reading magazines early on that gave advice for people that were much further along in the planning process, and I freaked out. I had no idea I needed to worry about something so complex when I barely even knew what colors I was thinking of using. Let’s be honest, being engaged is a ton of fun, but it can also be stressful. I hope some of these pointers will help brides as they plan their wedding, but if not, at least you get to look at some beautiful rings (and ring boxes) in the picture.

I’ve noticed on the boards that there are quite a few newly engaged girls. Congrats to you all!! It got me thinking about how I felt when I was first engaged and all the excitement that goes along with that newly acquired status. It was awesome. I seriously could not stop grinning! Along with all that excitement comes a lot of inspiration, ideas and panic about how to make this whole wedding thing come together.
I thought this might be the perfect time to share some dos and don’ts for the newly engaged girl. Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes and triumphs.

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
I consume a fair amount of low-brow media, so it doesn’t take me long to see a fashion trend fives times. Say, boyfriend jeans or oxfords. This is how my reactions to these trends go:
Style lemming. Or at least: easily confused by trends.
I really want my wedding to feel like me and Mr. PD, so I don’t look back and realize I did something because other brides were doing it. But how do you know what’s really you and what is a trend you’ve seen one too many times?

Let’s continue with the recaps, shall we?
After our rehearsal in the backyard, it was time to actually get ready for this thing. To be completely honest, I was sort of winging it at this point: I hadn’t really made a timeline beyond “Arrive at lodge around 9:30,” and the ceremony was set to start at 10. At some point I had a vision of all of our bridal brigade in our room with us, helping us get ready and drinking champagne or mimosas and toasting ourselves and each other… yeah, I may have already mentioned that some of my envisionings did not come to fruition. For one thing, 8:30 or even 9 AM really is too early for champagne; for another, our room was very spacious for two people, but was crowded with more than three. So everyone else bopped around the rest of the inn while we got ready.

An alternative title for this post might be: “Sew much help!”
A couple of months ago I started to feel a little anxious about our hometown party. What does one do at a “It’s NOT a Wedding” reception? I think I clearly documented what I didn’t want (bouquet toss, cake cutting, first dance) but what did that leave? Booze, food and dancing? Would that be enough? At first Mr Pretzel thought so.
Thankfully we knew another bee couple who were having a hometown reception a month before us. This couple happened to be our all time favorite bee couple (yes, I know it is not nice to have favorites), a couple we had never met but with whom we felt a strong connection. It all came together over the internets one night.
Mrs Pretzel: Babe, the Sewings invited us to their hometown reception in California. I wish we could go. It’s gonna be awesome.
Mr Pretzel: Why can’t we?
Mrs Pretzel: Seriously?

’Tis the season…already??? It is if you’re planning on sending out custom holiday cards!
Mrs. Penguin here! Mr. Penguin and I spent yesterday taking our holiday card photos over at the Embarcadero in San Francisco. This year, I’m forgoing the complete DIY route (what a disastrous 40+ hours I wasted last year high on spray glue fumes) and instead, we’re choosing Minted holiday cards.
Minted and Weddingbee want to share the holiday joy with you! Minted is giving away THREE sets of 100 holiday cards, complete with all the fun bells and whistles: liners, backers, and skinny wrap address labels. Holiday cards at Minted this year aren’t simply cards: They’re HUGE holiday suites, all with coordinating options for extras that make your holiday cards stand out from the crowd. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the cards in person—the printing and paper is luxe, and the little extras (my fave are the custom skinny wrap labels!) are incredible.
Here are some options I’m considering (and you could win)!
I’ve been wanting to write A Bee’s Life post pretty much since I became a bee, so it seems appropriate that I should finish my tenure here with my contribution to this series.
How did I find Weddingbee?
A few months after getting engaged, I started to think more about the cultural traditions that I hoped to incorporate into our wedding. You already know I had a non-traditional mehndi, but you have to know the rules to break them! So I did some Googling on mehndis and came across this archived post by Mrs. Jasmine. Jasmine and I go way back—to high school and college, so when I saw her picture on the blog, I got curious! (Fun fact: when I saw her picture and occupation on the side of the blog, I thought an impostor blogger was pretending to be Jasmine. Who knew I was so suspicious?!) I read through a few of her posts and some of the newer bloggers’ posts, and got hooked!
Before finding Weddingbee I garnered most of my wedding inspiration from sites like Style Me Pretty and Green Wedding Shoes, which I still love. Our wedding had a different aesthetic, though, and seeing the great variety of bloggers here made Weddingbee my go-to site pretty quickly.

With the day gone in a blur behind me, there I stood in the bridal suite, emotions awakened with a stomach full of butterflies and the heavy feeling of happy tears pushing on my eyes. I was just moments away from living out my little girl dream of walking down the aisle to marry the man I love.

Though my dreams weren’t quite my reality, I couldn’t help but think back and reflect on how much of that little girl still remained within.

Yesterday I blogged about alternative wedding activities that will keep our guests hanging out after dinner. Since caricatures might be expensive and would distract guests from dancing, our planner suggested we choose something more economical. How about lawn games?
After we were properly fed, everyone headed downstairs to play a game! BM Jess put together a game where Mr. Socks and I had to answer a series of questions about each other, and our guests had to guess whether we would answer each question about each other correctly.

Our status was tracked via a game board that BM Jess’s little brother made for us:

We’ve been meeting with photographers recently (it’s so hard to choose!), and everyone we’ve talked to includes an engagement session in their package. We both like this idea because it lets us get comfy being in front of the camera. (We might both work in theatre, but we’re backstage people!). And it gets us some images for save the dates, thank you cards, Christmas cards, etc. Now there are a few things to decide about engagement photos: what to wear (that’s a whole separate set of posts!!) and where to do them. Today we were thinking about where to do them.
Cinnamon Buns suggested the library—I like that idea, and it is very us…In fact, it is so us that I’d been thinking about doing wedding photos at the library! Related question: should we call the library ahead of time and ask, or just show up and start shooting so they can’t tell us “no” until we already have a few photos? Would a librarian really turn away a bride in a big white dress? I shared those thoughts (well, the ones about not wanting to repeat locations), and then Cinnamon Buns said, “Well, we could do it in front of our bookcases at home.” And that just got me rolling.
I’ve seen some lovely kitchen engagement photos, and our kitchen/living room/library is just one open space. Maybe we could get some lovely shots like these:
Like Miss Cardigan, I hate asking for help. I pride myself on being quite an independent person, the kind of person that as a little kid would refuse to let anyone help her, saying that “I can do it all by myself.”
Me. Age 6ish…wearing my trademark stubborn look. Pic taken by my mother
Well folks, the time has come to admit that I can’t do this wedding all by myself. It just isn’t going to happen if I stay on my high horse and refuse to admit that I just might possibly need some others to give me a hand. Or thirty hands…

So, we left off when I showed you some lovely details, and now it’s time to really kick off our wedding day!
I started the day with my bridesmaids waking me up early in the morning. Since we all spent the night at the ranch, we took turns using the four showers. I was one of the last to shower, because everyone insisted that I should get more sleep, and I’m so glad they let me sleep in!
I started putting on my makeup. My SIL was in charge of my hair (and all of the bridesmaids’ hair, too).
Since my hair took the most work (I have SO MUCH hair and it was pretty long), SIL Kristin had the help of my dear friend Katy, and both of them curled my massive amounts of hair.
