Secret Life of Bees: Gi to the raffe

December 2nd, 2010 @ 10:13 am by Mrs. Giraffe

At first, I was really excited about getting to do a Secret Life of Bees post, but then I realized, that I don’t have any good secrets. I’m pretty boring, white bread, granola… plain!

So you guys are all wondering what secret a plain Giraffe can share with you?

Well, it’s a doozie! Technically, it’s not my secret, but I kept it for 2 years so I kind of consider it mine. It’s actually Mr. Giraffe’s secret.

You see, when Mr. Giraffe and I were juniors in college, he decided he wanted to get a tattoo. It was the beginning of our junior year, and Mr. G had just turned 21. I mean, that seems a little young doesn’t it?

Especially if you break the number one tattoo rule. Y’know, that one about never getting someone’s name tattooed on you?

Well, Mr. G broke it.

We had been together for about two years, and Mr. G went out and got a big Miss Giraffe tattoo on his back. Scandal!

Secret Life of Bees: Gi to the raffe : wedding chicago Tat I mean, it really was kind of a scandal. I was 20, Mr. G was only 21, and we’d been together for only 2 years. A tattoo is kind of a huge deal, and I really hand it to Mr. G for doing it. Honestly, it kind of made me feel like a rock star. I mean, this was a year before we said the “L” word, but I mean, a guy doesn’t get your name tattooed on him, if he doesn’t “L” word you, right? Maybe that’s why I felt like a rock star. ;)

I always wanted a tattoo, by Daddy G told me when I was in school, that if I got one, he wouldn’t pay for my college. And he was totally serious.

Suffice it to say, my parents aren’t big fans of tattoos, and neither are Mr. G’s. I tell my parents everything, we’re BFFs, but I didn’t say a word about Mr. G’s tattoo…for two whole years. I really thought my ’rents would freak out, but aside from being surprised, they were kind of cool about it.

To this day, three years later, his family still doesn’t know. Our close friends know, but we don’t really go around telling people. People get really weird about name tattoos. I mean, I know it’s supposedly bad luck, but I don’t get why people freak out about it.

Either way, it’s totally our secret. Mr. G says he might want to get another tattoo one day, but for now, it’s the only one he has.

Anybody else, aside from Pengy, or anyone else’s fiance have a secret tattoo?

I have one! I got it when I was 18… I went with my parents on a Sunday afternoon, my mom held my hand and my dad paid for it. It’s an Irish claddaugh symbol on my right hip. I still love it several years later, although no one ever sees it except for me and FI.. so I bet there are a few people who don’t know It have it!

I got one when I was 21. My father has said on many occasions that he hates tattoos and wouldnt disown his kids if they got one, but would be incredibly dissapointed (as dissapointment is always worse). Needless to say, it’s been 7 years since I’ve had it and they still don’t know. I always thought on my wedding day maybe my mom would spot it (on my hip bone) but she didn’t…..it’s one of those things I’ll be keeping to myself until maybe it slips…. :) Love the font of Mr. G’s tattoo!!

I hid my tattoo from my parents for a long time. When my mom found out, she thought it was cool and wanted to get one. ;) My dad was pretty pissed off, but I was 23 and independent from my parents and he’d already tried the “you’re not my daughter” thing when I’d changed my major from pre-med, so he already knew that didn’t work! It was fine within a few weeks.

I got my first when I was 18, couldn’t decide what to get and didn’t want someone else’s name so I got my own name in fancy writing in the same spot as Mr. G. I am now in the process of getting it removed so it won’t show on my wedding day.

No tattoos here. I desperately wanted to get my nose pierced in college, but - like you - my dad said he would cut me off financially for the rest of my life, and, um…he was paying for college, soooo…yeah, that wasn’t an option.

While DH and I don’t have any tattoos of each other’s names, we do both have multiple tattoos, and he still wants to get more work done. He didn’t “hide” it from his parents after the first one, it was just in a place (his back) that they never really had occasion to view. But once they bought a lake house and now that we have parties there every summer, they’ve seen them all, both his and mine. His grandparents have too! And if any of them care to comment, then so be it. But usually they rib us for a moment then leave us alone. Because we don’t really want to have that conversation, and neither do they. Live and let live, people!

I can’t believe his parents haven’t seen it yet, does he never go swimming or take his shirt off around them then??? That’s crazy but also pretty cool!
I have two tattoos, one of which I managed to hide from my parents for almost a year and the other one was discovered by my grandfather about a week after I got it when I leaned forward to grab another cookie and he innocently asked me what was on my back…Busted!

My family is Mormon and totally against tattoos. When my mom saw mine for the first time I facetiously told her it was henna and she believed me. She figured it out the next time she saw me a few months later. At this point, I think she figured a tattoo was the least of my sins and not worth fighting about, so she let it slide. She hasn’t seen the more scandalous one I got, though, in a more scandalous place! And I hope she never will….

I got my first shortly after my 16th bday, my parents still don’t know about that one. They know about the other 4…but I don’t think my mom can handle knowing I have more than that..or the fact that I secretly got it while living under her roof ;P

Scandalous! I’ve always wanted a tattoo, but my family always threatens to disown me over it.
