About Mrs. Cheeseburger

I love hearing about how people found Weddingbee. Here is my story!

A Bee's Life: Cheeseburger Edition : wedding becoming a bee pittsburgh Cheeseb

How did I find Weddingbee?

I found the ’Bee in the fall of 2007, almost a year before I was engaged (*blushes*). I think I’ve mentioned like 100 times that I hated the first two years of med school and started planning my (future) wedding as a sort of fun distraction. It was a running joke among my med school friends, and we often took long breaks from studying to browse my latest wedding inspiration. I had always wanted a Penn State wedding, but at one point I realized that I needed a backup plan in case it didn’t work out. I googled “Pittsburgh Wedding Venues” and I found this post by Mrs. Lollipop. I was intrigued by this cute wedding planning site, and started milling around, which is how I found Mrs. Bell Pepper and became a dedicated follower of the blog (3 years ago, my goodness!). I don’t know if it was because she was a physician or because her color scheme was similar to what I had in mind, but I was instantly hooked!

I kept my addiction a secret for about 6 months, until I finally started discussing the details of our future wedding freely with Burger. We knew we were getting engaged at some point soon, so this wasn’t really that weird, but he still laughed at all the time I spent “on that wedding website.” What can I say? I love it here. :)

My Application Story

When I applied, I had been engaged for one year and reading Weddingbee for two. I felt that I had a pretty good grasp on the type and tone of posts that the site used, and I wondered if writing about our wedding was something I would be good at. So, in July of 2009 (exactly 8 months from our wedding day - the earliest I could apply), I started my own planning blog. Originally, I kept it a secret from everyone but my mom and Burger. I was really only writing with the intention of applying to Weddingbee, anyway. After I had the requisite 15 posts, I filled out my application and sent it in; a few weeks later I was rejected. Initially, I laughed it off and figured that the whole blogging thing wasn’t for me. But then I realized that I had been enjoying it—a lot, actually! It gave me an outlet for planning and venting, and made it easy to share projects with my mom and sister. I kept writing and eventually showed my MIL, SIL and a few girlfriends. After I had a few more months of posts up (at the end of October), and I had told much more of our story (including quite a few DIY projects), I decided to reapply, fully expecting to be rejected again. I was completely shocked/excited/honored when I was accepted!

As many bees have said before me, never be discouraged if you have to reapply! I would also encourage you to have considerably more posts than the minimum and make sure you include lots of things that are unique to you: your DIY projects, your interesting point of view, what makes you and your significant other different.

What it’s Like Writing for Weddingbee

Writing for Weddingbee is fun and fulfilling! Documenting our wedding was something I really enjoyed, and sharing it publicly certainly gave it an interesting perspective. I cannot say enough how much the kind words, advice, and feedback provided by the wonderful readers (and fellow writers) of Weddingbee has meant to me during my time here! That being said, it can also be difficult at times—writing three or four posts each week (posts that are well-written and interesting to all of you) can be tough! Not only that, but laying it all out there can be scary sometimes. Overall, it has been quite an amazing experience, and I will be forever thankful for this wonderful opportunity.

If you are on the fence about applying to be a blogger, do it! And if you have any questions, feel free to comment below or send me a message!

I laughed out loud at the reference to “that wedding website,” since that is definitely what weddingbee is known as in our apartment!

I’m curious– when you have this great body of blog posts about DIY projects and choosing venues and such, did you reuse those posts on your official weddingbee blog when you were accepted?
And of course, congratulations on your marriage!

@dolphindoll: that’s pretty much how it works! the posts on your personal blog used as your weddingbee application are eventually re-published on the site. I think some bees start over from scratch though (Avocado I think?). Good luck!
