Mrs. Jellyfish's Picture
Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!
About Mrs. Jellyfish

This is the poem I wrote about being a two-dress bride. I know a lot of brides go through the experience of purchasing a dress and then having regrets, and some aren’t able to overcome that regret until they buy their 2nd (or 3rd) dress. I was a little embarrassed about my dress indecision and thought that a lighthearted poem would be the best way to address it while laughing at myself. And I gotta say, I’m pretty proud of my rhyming skillz, too. :)

~~~
Once upon a time, there was a newly engaged gal,
Who was so very excited, she called all her pals,
“I’m off to look at dresses!” she shrieked with glee
Her friends thought, “’wow that’s early,’ but couldn’t disagree.
So one Saturday morning, she went to the shop
Tried a handful of dresses – that’s where she should have stopped.
But she was so excited, she bought one on the spot
Her mother, aunt and bridesmaid all assured her she looked hot.
As soon as she got in the car, she felt a sense of panic:
“Did I just buy the wrong dress, or am I being manic?”
She tried to shrug off the feeling, hoping that it would fade
But as the months went on, her fears just weren’t allayed.
Then one fine day, while browsing on the ‘Bee
She saw a reader’s wedding gown and was filled with sudden envy
“I must know who makes this dress, it’s simply so divine”
The next day she drove to the salon to check out the design.
The dress was absolutely perfect, of that she was sure;
But she already had a dress, so she played it demure.
She went back home and called her mom, told her of the news.
Her mom was understanding, said “you should love the dress you choose.”
So back to the salon she went, this time with her mother,
And even she loved the dress, despite having paid for the other.
“If you love it, let’s get it,” said her understanding mom.
“I can’t, it feels impulsive,” she said, trying to stay calm.
Off they went, leaving the dream dress behind
But the indecisive bride just couldn’t get it off her mind.
After months spent thinking of the dress, the bride made one last plea
“Let’s bring dad to the store – if he loves it then it’s meant to be.”
Finally, in January, after months of indecision,
Her father confirmed it: in the dress, she was a vision.
She finally had that moment, the joy and the tears
She could picture her wedding day, could almost hear the cheers.
So she put aside her dignity, she put aside her pride,
And that’s how she became a “two-dress bride”.
Were you selling your first dress in the bee like last week or is just me? maybe it was someone else.
You looked beautiful in both dresses by the way;)
While you look beautiful in both dresses, I think you definitely made the right choice.
Aww!! :) I love this. I do a lot of storytelling, and love doing the little voices and whatnot. I have no shame in doing the faces, too. :P
I read this out loud and just love, love, love it. <3 I’m glad you got your dream dress!
Ohhhh If I were only a two dress bride ….
I’m more of a 22 dress bride!
It all started with a custom Chinese replica of a dress I thought was PERFECT for me and ended with a small business of paying it forward to brides on a limited budget.
I’ve gone through the wringer in the dress department, however the emails and happy brides from my obsession have really made the engagement process a LOT of fun!
Our wedding is on New Year’s Eve, but I think I’ll keep recycling dresses for brides who are in your dilemma. BTW … I LOVE your first dress!
I am so so glad you went with the second dress. It’s incredible, and so timeless. I don’t think your wedding would have felt the same without it. :-)
@TotallyPinkaholic: Yes! That was me. I’m still trying to sell it.
@soontobekatieb: Agreed on the supportive moms thing! I thought she was going to be angry, but she totally understood where I was coming from.
@Katie: Thanks so much for the sweet comment, you are so right: it wouldn’t have felt the same at all!
Thanks for sharing this! I also bought a dress and am having second thoughts. Now I found one I think may be the one, but it’s hard to know what to do! And you’re, right, you don’t want to be impulsive!
You can tell by the look on your face in the second dress that you just lit right up. It’s gorgeous on you, and it was the way to go! There are a million pretty dresses, but when you feel great, that’s what makes it beautiful!
I like this post too. Because I am totally with you on this one. I actually did something similar when I joined the 2 dress bride brigade. Should probably post that at some point. Ugh, I’m like ready to give up trying to sell it.
