About Ms. Sloth

A Penny Saved

December 4th, 2010 @ 1:40 pm by Ms. Sloth

A few months back, Mr. S and I were really stressing out over the wedding. Specifically, we were stressing over paying for the wedding. What I didn’t disclose at the time was that, right after we got engaged, a relative promised us a certain amount of money. After we worked out our budget and paid deposits to all of our vendors, that relative told us that they’d be giving us much, much less. It was really rough. By that point, we were kind of stuck. Our options included drastically changing the wedding we were going to have, or going into debt by taking out a loan or paying for the wedding with credit cards.

Both options were really unattractive, and it was a hard decision, but in the end, we realized that we didn’t want to have a different wedding. We wanted the wedding that we’d been planning the whole time. So we chose to save as much money as we could, and go into as little debt as possible for the balance of the wedding.

Well, this week, Mr. S and I were going over the budget, and we came to the realization that we won’t have to go into debt for the wedding! We’re going to be able to afford it!

Here is how we’re doing it:

We got help from family. We’re not doing it alone. Our family is helping us out a bit, and their contributions will end up paying for about 20% of our wedding.

We cut the guest list. I shed a lot of tears over this, but we ended up cutting about 10 people from our guest list. It sounds terrible to quantify it like I’m about to, but that alone saved us about a thousand bucks.

We began to save, save, save. We decided to cut out a lot of things from our everyday budget:

  • Food - Right around the time we started trying to save money, we also started dieting. Almost immediately, it was apparent how much less money we were spending per month. We’re probably saving about $150-$200 a month just by eating healthy and cutting out fast food, and junk food, and cutting waaaaaaay down on restaurants and alcohol. We also stopped buying expensive coffee drinks every morning, and now I just drink some tea at work.
  • Clothing - I’ve admitted it before: I’m a shopper. Well, I’ve almost completely stopped buying clothes. I say almost completely, because there were a few necessities (my winter coat was falling apart and since I’ve lost weight, some of my old clothes are too big) but I was very frugal. I bought just the basics and got it all on sale.
  • Entertainment - We were on the 5 at a time Neflix plan and now we only get 2 DVDs at a time. We pretty much stopped going to movies or doing any expensive recreational activities.
  • Transportation - I was paying $80 a month for my monthly transit pass to get to and from work. But, we realized that my office was pretty much on the way to Mr. S’s office, so now he picks me up and drops me off.
  • Utilities - We turned our air conditioning off on September 1st and didn’t turn our central heat on until November 1st. We probably saved about $300 in those two months alone.

We used budgeting tools. We started using Mint.com to balance our budgets. It’s amazing how easy it is to control what you spend when you have a wonderful and free tool to help you balance your budget.

And that’s it! We’ve got a few months to go, but I’ve projected our budget out until Wedding Day and we’ll be okay! WAHOOOOOOO!!!! I’m so relieved that we’ll get to have the wedding we want without going into debt! We’ll even be able to afford our minimoon!

Did you need to save money for your wedding? How did you do it?

That is very good news! I am happy that you guys managed to save money but not by sacrificing some fun stuff. I am also super excited you even get to include a minimoon!

That’s great news! We’ve done pretty much all of that after the wedding to deal with the fact that we are now living on only one income. I’m totally a shopper also, and it’s really hard. I lost a lot of weight awhile ago, and found that thrift store shopping was a great way to fill in the in-between gaps in my wardrobe that were created by losing weight and not having any clothes.

Great news! Weddings are so expensive. I totally underestimated how much things would cost and then had to try to save more, and more money. I’m so glad the wedding is over and I can buy clothes!! Shopping was the first thing I had to forgo. Basically nothing new for a year will make you look raggity!

I am telling you…the clothes shopping is killer. I gotta leave Gilt and Rue La La behind for a lil bit.

This is a good lesson for every bride- don’t spend any promised money until the check is cleared!

We had a relative promise to pay for everything the brides family paid for, and this was offered to us, not asked for. Having been burned by said relative on a couple things before we planned the wedding we could afford if we were paying for everything ourselves. Lo and behold, said relative didn’t even pay for a 1/4 of the wedding. We’re very thankful he contributed, but things could have been very messy. How do you get in relative’s face and say “Hey, you promised me X, not Y. BOOOOO!”

I’m glad that the Sloth’s will still have the wedding they want!! Cheers to being frugal and not going into debt for the big day!

Yay!! SO awesome - what a huge relief, and these changes are all so easy and hopefully you can maintain them beyond the wedding, too (except for the clothes and restaurants… ;)! Congrats!!

Great job, Sloth! We’ve been in total cost saving mode too… It’s all worth it though to not rack up a ton of post-wedding debt.

Mint.com is so great. It’s a little scary to see where all your money is going at first (talk about a reality check!), but it ended up being a wonderful tool for me to budget when times were tight.

Haha, we are at Cosi right now discussing this exact thing! Mint’s been really helpful for us, too. I’ve become fanatical about coupons, and that’s helped some. Glad it’s all worked out for you! After talking to some friends, I’ve come to the realization there’s not a whole lot worse for a fledgling marriage than a boatload of debt.

That’s amazing!! Well done, Sloths! We were in a similiar situation and I will say, it’s soooo nice after the wedding not to be worried about every little penny and get that expensive coffee drink if you want it!

Good job! I’m so proud of you for making it happen.

We are very much in the budget wedding category as well even though both of us want a fancy shmancy wedding. We really lucked out with how much his dad is helping us and my parents ended up contributing more than we thought, but we’re still paying for almost a 1/3 of it ourselves when we barely have enough to live on as it is. It sucks, but, well, you (hopefully) only get married once.
