Going on a Venue Hunt

December 6th, 2010 @ 1:57 pm by Mrs. Waffle

There are a bazillion amazing venues in and around Austin. How were the Waffles going to narrow it down to just one?

Going on a Venue Hunt : wedding austin venues Venue Hunt venue-hunt

Well, Miss Waffle got out her monster stack of Austin wedding magazines, fired up the Google and kept the following guidelines in mind…

  1. Look for venues with outdoor capabilities. Mr Waffle made it very clear that he wanted to do as much outside as possible. Having come from, as he says, “grey, depressing England” he loves any excuse to be out of doors when the sun is shining no matter how hot it is. Bees, we live in Texas and it gets H-O-T hot here! The average temperature for early June is in the low 90s. AH! 90s!!! When he suggested this I had a tragic mental picture of our wedding guests fleeing the scene for air conditioning or passing out from heat stroke while he sunned on a rock like a lizard. Eek! I was hoping we could at least compromise and have an indoor/outdoor affair.
  2. Must be within a reasonable distance of downtown. This was important because not only do we have a lot of out of town guests, but we have a lot of out of country guests and making them travel 30 miles to a gorgeous location after flying across an entire ocean just didn’t seem fair. Several venues in the greater Austin area fit criterion number one, but were eventually ruled out due to distance.
  3. Must allow outside vendors of our choosing. I can become a pretty stubborn, cranky pants lil’ Wafflette when people tell me I can’t do certain things. Not being able to have the freedom to choose our own caterer, bartender, baker, etc just doesn’t sit well with me (no offense, of course, to those that would rather do all inclusive).
  4. Stay in budget! This is pretty self-explanatory. Luckily, when we went to look at venues, we were staying open to the possibility of having a Sunday wedding for extreme money saving purposes.
  5. Make sure the venue gives you a decent number of hours for what you are paying. Many venues I looked at would only let you have the space for 4 hours and charged a ton extra for every hour over. I knew that I wanted to be able to get to our venue early, set up, chill with friends and a mimosa and really enjoy the day. The last thing I want to feel on our wedding day is a horribly expensive time crunch.

Armed with those criteria in mind, online reviews and advice from Magic Alie, I was able to narrow my choices down to a final three which will be explored in our next episode of “Going on a Venue Hunt.”

Did you have a criteria list to help you on your venue hunt?

You’re lucky you have so many options! In my area there are about…two, haha. I can’t wait to see what you chose!

I don’t know if it would be too far for your guests to drive, but I got married out at Star Hill Ranch in Bee Cave (it’s about 25 minutes, give or take from downtown) and its *fabulous*. We got it from 8am-midnight on Saturday, plus the owner let us set up on Friday since there was no event that day. Talk about less stress for the wedding day!! You have to bring in all your vendors, but that allowed us to save some money being able to choose who we hired. Message me if you need any help for anything wedding in Austin! lol :)

I am getting married in Houston in July. Talk about HOT. I live in NYC and honestly, I’d rather do it here but anyhow, I found out that those venues that let you have only 4hrs, all you have to do is ask and they can throw in an extra hour for you. I asked my venue after seeing another bride on TK mention that they gave it to her as an incentive, you bet I was on the phone with them ASAP and they gave it to me :)

So I know you already have a venue picked out, but let me just say that our venue (Zilker Clubhouse) fits the bill perfectly for any future Austin brides - $1300 (300 is deposit) - not only outdoor and indoor space but the outdoor view is of downtown!

Allows for any vendors, and you have it for 10 hours…

It’s kind of awesome! We looooved it! The only drawback was that it was the end of May and so it was warm, but inside it was nice until the sun went down..

Hi! Have you tried Memory Lane Event Center? They allow outside vendors and they have a beautiful pavillion that has AC!!! Very well priced, and the bride and groom get to stay the night for free! I would def recommend that you check them out! Good Luck!

You Austin bees are amazing! The venues you each mentioned were in my top 5!
@Ms Cheetah: That outfit for real exists…as a costume I made for a production of Peter and the Wolf :)

Did we have a list? Um, must include chair covers! I know, I know, I’m crazy.

More importantly, I love your illustrations, Waf. They always make me smile.
