A Thing for My Ring: Redux

December 6th, 2010 @ 1:10 pm by Ms. Sloth

Months ago, I’d purchased a little teak ring holder on which to keep my ring when I wasn’t wearing it. That way, I wouldn’t lose it like Mr. S feared. It had cost five bucks and was doing its job.

And then I got a PM from hive member jordynrose. She’d found a little box on Anthropologie’s website and thought I could check it out.

You guys. It looks exactly like my ring!

I’ve never seen another ring exactly like mine before, and it was exciting to see its likeness on such a cute little box.

So, um, I bought it. I bought it even though I don’t need it and even though Mr. S and I are trying our damnedest to save every penny. It was only eighteen dollars, which is pretty cheap for Anthro, and I felt that it was kismet. I had to own this thing. And it’s fabulous.

Did you find yourself making unnecessary wedding-related purchases, just because they were too perfect?

Nice find! I think a splurge on something like that is totally justifiable!

I see things sometimes that I would really like to have - most of the time I take a step back and consider whether I really need it or if the money would be better spent somewhere else. Sometimes I end up getting it, other times I don’t.

I think if I was in your situation as you’ve described it in previous posts, I would have let this one go (or maybe sent a link to my husband with a *hint hint great Christmas gift* subject line).

I feel kind of bad posting that, but I think that it would be irresponsible to just say nothing, or “great purchase! Of course it’s ok!” based on what you’ve shared with us before.

@realeastcoaster:

I have to agree about stepping back from this one. Yes, it’s only $18, but you add that in with a few other things that are “only X,” and suddenly you’re out hundreds of dollars on impulse buys.

I probably would have done the same thing on impulse, but after a post about how you are having to scrounge for money to pay for the wedding, every bit counts!

I appreciate everyone’s input about this. This was the first non-necessary purchase I’d bought myself in a really long time, and I’m still glad that I did. Sometimes you need to indulge yourself a teensy bit, you know?

@bride123: It’s actually lacquered wood, not cardboard.

It’s so cute, and how serendipitous that is IS your ring on there! And I know from experience that when you’re on a budget, you HAVE to buy some “off-budget” items (and $18 it totally allowable) to stay sane.

Ahhh, the power of the hive. The ring box does look remarkably like your ring - too perfect not to buy!

I’m torn, on the one hand: cute box and $18 isn’t too much if you are going to use it for the next 20 years. BUT on the other hand I am with the bees who said that given your attempts to save cash for the wedding I might have let it go….

Yes, Ms Sloth could have constructed her own box out of paper she made from cotton she grew in her own garden, but… it really wouldn’t have saved much dough, and let’s be real, when something like that calls your name, you gotta get it. No high horses - it’s just fabulous. I love it!

Love the ring box- I think it was totally meant to be. And for $18- the perfect, very small splurge.

@snapdragon: I didn’t make my comment from a “high horse”, but from a place of concern. Sloth has posted more than once that they are having trouble finding the money to pay for the wedding, and are only managing to do it by saving every penny they can find. This post comes on the heels of one of those posts (and one of those previous posts discussed the possibility of getting a loan to pay for the wedding).

Maybe what I said is seen as being a wet blanket or condescending by some, but if this was me I would hope that someone would give me the same reality check. If Sloth hears that but wants to indulge in some impulse buys anyway that’s her prerogative. I won’t mention it again.

Oh, for Christ’s sake. Sloth’s LAST POST was about how much she kicked her budget’s ass and is now not in any danger of going into debt for her wedding. She’s obviously been working really hard to save and be cautious about spending, and if she wants to spend $18 on something, she’s an adult and has every right to do so.

I’m not sure why Miss Panther & Miss Snapdragon have taken such offense to people not jumping on the “oh how great” bandwagon. No one disputes that it’s cute, but after several posts on going into debt for their wedding, etc., you can’t jump on people for truthful responses to “So, um, I bought it. I bought it even though I don’t need it and even though Mr. S and I are trying our damnedest to save every penny.” Miss Sloth put it out there, I’m sure knowing that not every response would be “yay Sloth!”

Okay, I didn’t expect that this would turn into a “thing.” I just wanted to share my pretty little find with the hive.

I debated on whether or not to post about our budget ups and downs, but I did so for two reasons: because I wanted to share our wedding planning experience as honestly as possible, and because I knew that it was a common issue and I was hoping that some readers could relate.

But the budget is settled. We’ll be absolutely fine. We even came into a bit more money after I wrote the post that went up this past weekend. We’re good!

There will be a lot more posts going up featuring things that I’ve bought for the wedding. I’d hate to think that every time I blog about a purchase, someone will have an issue with the money we’ve spent.

I thank everyone for their concern and my fellow bees for their support, but we’re good on budget. We won’t go into debt. And the ring box wasn’t necessary, but it was very pretty, and I love it!
