Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.
About Mrs. Brooch

Since we don’t live together, we decided we would have a traditional registry and ask our guests for household items as wedding gifts. I love interior design and I’m dying to feather our nest after the wedding (it will definitely be my new focus), but Mr. B on the other hand, couldn’t care less what was on our registry…

That is, until we finally stepped foot into a Bed Bath & Beyond this weekend.

Check him out examining the differences in these forks:

Who knew choosing flatware would be such a daunting task?

Well, we didn’t, and we went into this totally unaware of all the household items there are in the world. Who knew there was such a variety of serving bowls for entertaining, red and white wine glasses, and so many different types of things like toasters and coffee makers? Seriously?

Yes, seriously, and we were in the thick of it this weekend:

We started a registry at Target a long time ago when we first got engaged, but at the time we didn’t know what we needed. We had no clue where to begin and we just scanned whatever. I’ve been avoiding editing that list for awhile, because there’s so much random stuff on it!

This time around, we went in with a much difference attitude. We had a plan. We had a vision of what we wanted and more importantly, what we needed, and that made it a much more pleasant experience.

See, Mr. B’s place is a total bachelor pad. I’m talking no frills. None.

I guess his grandmother knows this because she’s been badgering us to pick out a comforter set (I love that she somehow knew—probably being a woman—that we would be replacing his current one), so that’s where we started: bedding.

Here’s the comforter set we picked (sorry for the picture quality):

I REALLY like it.

This gives you a better idea of the design:

I took his picture to carry around the store and match up our colors:

The apartment we’ll be living in is a two bedroom, so we also picked out bedding for our second room, too. Here is a picture of that set:

Feathering Our Nest: Bed Bath and Beyond : wedding arlington registry Imag00302 IMAG00302

Really, I had no idea there were so many different types of sheets…

There was three full walls, just like this one:

Feathering Our Nest: Bed Bath and Beyond : wedding arlington registry Imag003031 IMAG00303

Next up was the bathroom and by far my FAVORITE items on our registry.

I found a really nice set with the same color palette as our bedroom, but with much lighter tones. When we picked the dark chocolate comforter, I was worried the room would be really dark, but I think these bathroom accessories will give the space a nice balance.

I. LOVE. IT.

I don’t know why, but I just LOVE it.

We hit up kitchen items next, and while some women might get really excited about this part, I just felt mostly overwhelmed. There was SO. MUCH. STUFF. Too much. Look at all these different types of silverware.

Feathering Our Nest: Bed Bath and Beyond : wedding arlington registry Imag004011 IMAG00401

AHHHH!! It reminds me of that scene in Beauty in the Beast, “Be our guest”!

We figured out a good system for making decisions. We needed a system, trust me.

I would pick my favorite three (because I can’t pick just one), and Mr. B would make the final choice. That’s kind of how we pick everything, so it was only natural we implemented this tactic here when we’re faced with just so many tedious choices.

Here’s the flatware we picked, in case you were wondering:

There were a lot of everyday dishes to chose from, too, but this decision came a little easier. We knew we wanted something simple—something we wouldn’t mind looking at every single day. Mr. B has this wretched green set from college I won’t miss at all!

I was excited to finally pick out something I liked:

He may not look like it, but he was loving this set, too:

Our favorite item from the registry is definitely the Keurig coffee brewer! This was one of those things we didn’t have to think twice about. LOVE. IT.

Mr. B’s favorite item?

These knives:

Registering was REALLY fun and it got us really excited about life beyond the wedding. It was nice to take the focus off that one day and think more about all the days that will follow. For us, this experience wasn’t just about picking out gifts, but figuring out what we want to make our first-time house a home. :)

Did you register? What was the experience like? Any interior design bees around? How did I do?

We haven’t registered yet but I’m super excited to do so! It’s weird- I wouldn’t be too bummed if I didn’t get stuff off of the registry, I just like shopping for things!

Haha…I feel you on wanting to feather the nest! My fiance currently eats his meals off the coffee table (there’s no regular table at all), which drives me crazy. And sometimes there’s no TP in the house. At all. I’m not sure how he survives without me there. :P

Seriously though, it’s so exciting to start getting ready for our future home together. I love all the interior design stuff.

We registered at myregistry.com, which we’ve really enjoyed. It’s great being able to shop online or in person, at any store we like!

@PitBulLover: Wow! That’s so ironic! Actually, we were in Southern VA, in Williamsburg. @DoxieDoll: That’s kind of how we felt the first time around. We didn’t care whether we got the stuff. We still don’t really care (like we won’t be SUPER upset), but the second time around we actually picked stuff we REALLY want. Fun!!

@Minutiae: Hahaha @No TP in the house! FUNNY! Mr. B is the same way, and it is exciting to think about revamping the space! I’ll have to check out myregistry. Shopping online would be really convenient.

Your post just made me excited to register. And your reasons at the end were so sweet. My guy doesn’t see the sense in registering, but I think he’ll enjoy it once we actually do it. :)

regsitering at BB and beyond is so much fun! I didn’t even know before our wedding planning that you could register for china there! They are so helpful too. Our “must have” item was a dyson vacuum so I totally get where you are coming from!

Thanks so much for a post on Registries! My SI and I are doing this while he is in town over Christmas. We, like you, have not lived together - which has us slightly anxious about the registry process. It looks like so much fun - but combining lives and styles seems a bit daunting!

Kudos to you!

Just like LoriKay628…we’re getting ready to register too (probably sometime in Jan)- so this post could not have come at a better time!

I’m actually pretty nervous about the whole process. My fiance and I have TOTALLY different tastes! Seriously, if I say “white”…he’ll say “black”- not to spite me, but because we seriously have different visions on E-V-E-R-Y-thing!

Should be a blast! =)

Miss Brooch the BBB in Fairfax near Fair Oaks mall is a really big BBB. They stock fine china if you want to look at that. Registering was a lot of fun.

D’oh! Your BB&B has bedding patterns ours didn’t! I love the sets you picked!
And I hear you on being overwhelmed… wine glasses alone took waaaaaaaay longer to decide on than I’d expected. (What size? Which red? Which white? Stemless or stemmed? Cut crystal or plain? OMG!)

My best friend and her husband actually got into a HUGE fight when they registered. Over flatware. So I’m girding my loins for when the Mr. and I have a disagreement in registry picks. As long as I can get my immersion blender on there I’m aokay! :D

And I to was at the Tyson’s BB&B this weekend. Scary!

Great pics!! I was totally unpleasantly surprised to find our Mr TM had some strong opinions on things such as flatware, so annoying!

BB&B scares the crap out of me. It’s just too much good stuff, wall to wall and so high up… it’s intense! Looks like you picked out some good stuff!

I’m such an organized dork, we went on “pre-registering” trips to our registry stores. You know, to suss out their products in person! But BB&B’s wall of flatware did us in. We had to step away and resume an hour later. Too many choices!

Flatware was hard, because I kept going for looks, but Mr. CB (the more sensible one of us!) was going for how it felt in the hand. And really, if the knife handle is uncomfortable, it doesn’t matter how pretty it is!

You will love the Keurig. My mom bought me one before I started studying for the Bar and we use it all the time. We registered in a slightly untraditional way. We went to the store and looked at stuff in person like dishes, glassware, and silverware and then went home and did all the registering online. I definitely tweaked the list many times over as time went on, but it was way easier than walking around scanning. Being in the store was just too overwhelming for us.

Glad you had fun! Did you let him hold the scanning gun? That seems to be the thing my FI is most excited about.
