About Mrs. Prairie Dog

After hours of hunting the Internet, I had exactly zero light-bulb moments. No—a-ha!—that’s what I want. Since my taste in dresses is fairly…old fashioned, nothing that sells as a bridesmaids dress these days really sang to me. Except this one:

This dress, to me, is formal-gown perfection. Understated, elegant, timeless. I would love wearing this dress so much that I would pay $400. But there’s no way I could expect my girls to do that for a simple dress they didn’t even pick out.

When I floated the idea of pick-your-own dresses, my girls seemed to want some direction. So I waffled about like the annoying un-decider that I am.

First up, I tried to pick a color.

This One Is for My Fellow Indecisive Brides : wedding bridesmaid dress cincinnati Blackan blackan

I think the blue is dreamy—subdued, soft, spring-y. But the specific color I wanted—a slate gray-ish, cloudy kind of blue—is difficult to find. Also, since I have a best man on my side, he’d stick out in a black suit next to blue dresses. Plus, black is classic, flattering, and chic. But then I worried that long, black gowns would be too black-tie formal for my regular-formal wedding.

The weeks of indecision turned into months, and I was starting to feel the heat. The sooner I decided, the sooner the dresses would come in, the sooner alterations could be made. I started to stress. But then my MOH floated a brilliant idea. Pick a weekend in the next few weeks. On that Satuday, we will go to one of the larger dress shops in the area, and we WILL leave with a decision made.

And that, my friends, is exactly what we did. Any time I worried that the decision should have been made already, I simply said to myself—it WILL be done on the 9th. I don’t need to worry about it until then. This pick-a-date-and-do-it thing was really helpful and highly recommended for any tough decision.

OK, be honest. Would you have gone with black or blue?

I really like the blue but you can never go wrong with black! I am currently struggling with the bridesmaid dress decision, can’t wait to see what you decided.

I think black with a slate/blue accent would be gorgeous… of course, I don’t know how you feel about accents or how easy it would be to find said accents. :P Or maybe blue hydrangea BM bouquets… but it looks like you have pink ones picked already… so nevermind moot point lol.

I’m pretty indecisive too, so good luck on the 9th!! :D

my girls wore black, floor length gowns and they were BEAUTIFUL. i was so scared - because i’m extremely fair skinned - that i would look washed out in photos but it was PERFECT!

You’re speaking to my indecisive soul, which is why I’m forcing this decision on our bridesmaids. Either color would be killer, & that first dress you posted is CHIC to the max.

LOVE the blue… but black is nice if it’s going to be an evening wedding. Wait. No. Scratch that. No one follows wedding-rules any more ;o)

@Miss Jam: I think so too…although I’m sure some people would see it as “funeral processional chic” haha. I dig classic black, what can I say?

@Lauren: that’s so reassuring! (spoiler alert. haha.)

That blue is really pretty but black is so easy and classic. I love black BM dresses personally. I wanna see the dresses you chose! :D

If you’re letting them pick different dresses, I think you ought to go with black. Otherwise you’ll need to be okay with a wide range of blues. That blue is gorgeous but I don’t think you’ll find many styles in that color since its unique. Good luck! You can always do black with that dusty blue in the shoes and maybe a sash or necklace.

I would go for the blue, but I’m biased because I have to wear black for work, so black clothes = work for me.

If you go with the black you can always get a blue sash to tie around the waist or have the seamstress sew the blue sash to the back seem around the waist like a medium size band to add a bit of color and add a small broach to the middle and you can mix up the broaches so every one is a little bit different. Just an idea. Good luck on your decision!

I love the blue. I think it is a beautiful color.

I also really like the idea of having a drop dead date and a plan. I wish my bridesmaids were closer so I could use that method for my indecision.

The blue is beautiful but unless you’re picking the dresses or having them pick from a specific collection, you’ll have different blues. Even slate blue is different from one designer to the next. Black would ensure you have a cohesive look.

I struggled looking for the exact same color of blue. After hours looking online and in bridal shops, we ended up finding dresses at Lord & Taylor! (this dress, but without the weird flutter sleeves: http://www.dillards.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=301&productId=502432896&storeId=301

I think that black is classic. The slate blue sounds gorgeous, but if the color isn’t just right it could end up looking too baby blue.
