About Ms. Sloth

“It’s a Map!”

December 7th, 2010 @ 11:20 am by Ms. Sloth

I absolutely love our venue. LOVE IT. It’s beautiful, rustic, and unique, but it’s got one drawback. It is hard to find.

Please let there be someone who gets this reference!

It’s in a very weird and remote area of the city, away from most neighborhoods, hotels, and attractions. It doesn’t even have an official number and address, just an intersection. And most GPS devices just can’t find it.

So, I’ve been taking every action possible to make sure that our guests don’t get lost on their way to our wedding. I put detailed directions on our website, as well as a link to the venue on Google Maps. I am also planning to include those same detailed directions along with the invitations. But I feared that wasn’t enough.

What I wanted was a map. But an adorable customized one just wasn’t in the budget.

And I wanted something a bit more personalized than just a generic Google map.

I was stuck until I found my guardian angel, a.k.a. Mrs. Ballet Flat. Last year, she posted step-by-step instructions to create your own map. And the instructions were easy to follow and clear.

I settled in with PowerPoint and Photoshop, and a few hours later, I had this:

It’s not a delightful work of art like the map above. FAR from it. But it’s clear and understandable, and has more personality than a plain old generic map has. And most importantly, it’ll (I hope) help our guests find our venue without any problems.

And a huge THANK YOU to Mrs. Ballet Flat for the inspiration and instructions. You’re awesome!

Are you including a map with your wedding invitations?

Isn’t it amazing how much the ENTIRE Weddingbee community has depended on Mrs. Ballet Flat’s tutorial (myself included)? She’s amazing…

Your map looks great, nice job!

Your map looks great! I too needed a map to get people to our rehearsal dinner site. We were having the dinner on the Navy base here in town, so easy directions were a must. I even got them printed to hand out at the rehearsal. Two weeks before the rehearsal, the main road was closed and everybody had to detour around it, necessitating carpooling and eliminating my maps. :-( Oh well, best laid plans…

my advice is to add step by step driving directions on the back side of the map for your guests who are a bit shaky with their navigation skills.

Umm… not sure if you forgot or simply don’t mind the web seeing the info, but the date, venue, and names aren’t blurred out.

I LOVE the map, though :D

The Mr. is a geographer. (seriously he has a PhD and everything) We have a map. A fantastic crazy detailed map he made on professional map making software.

But I love your map more! :D

We are including one, originally we were looking to see how much it would cost… but it wasn’t budget friendly.

We are getting married in the park on a road called Emerson Loop (because it loops around the golfcourse) all of our most important moments happened around the loop… Even our proposal! The invite designer was so in love with my idea of including the spots in the invites that she only charged us 20 cents extra for invitation! Making it only a grand whopping total of $5 extra on our total!

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Mr. Octo has “IT’S A TRAP!” as a little soundbite on his cell phone and often attaches it when he text messages me. Then I open my phone unsuspectingly and get an earful of IT’S A TRAP!

Your map is lovely! You might want to get the word out that your map is actually helpful. Our ceremony was at a vineyard and if you use a GPS, it takes you down a dirt road. We included directions on our website, and created a map for the invitations and OOT bags. Most people still took the gravel road. *sigh*
