Mrs. Jam's Picture
Mrs. Jam, Chicago Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Associate Wedding Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Structural Engineer Engagement Date: December 23, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Hunter’s Ridge, Princeton, IL About Me: I’m a penny-pinching cat lady getting ready to marry the frugal dog lover of my dreams. Our ideal Saturday morning includes rummaging around people’s junk at garage and estate sales followed by an afternoon date to our favorite café, where we only eat sandwiches that include the word “salad.” We actually love it so much, it’s sort of our unofficial wedding theme: Look at our delicious finds, eat homemade ham salad, and celebrate our love…barndance style. When we’re not obsessing over our love-fest shindig, we’re planning themed parties for our best friends and jamming to '90s music.
About Mrs. Jam

The Jam story began in early 2006, when my college friend’s boyfriend was supposed to come visit her. Unfortunately, her roommate also planned on having an obscene number of visitors that same weekend, so my friend’s boyfriend decided to spend his weekend visiting his best friend (enter Mr. Jam into this insane mix) at a different college two hours away.

Are you confuzzled? I know, it’s so weird. But it gets better.

So with a mix of “Classes-are-killing-me-and-I-miss-my-dude-and-now-what-will-I-do-with-my-available-weekend?” running through her mind, my up-for-anything friend decided to take a road trip with me as her copilot. At the time, this included literally dragging me out of the confines of my room and not letting me say no. Also, at the time, I thought she was being a brat.

In a fit of rebellion, I wore a J.Lo-esque baby pink velour jumpsuit, refused to wear a stitch of makeup, and left for our road trip with soaking wet hair. Hindsight is clearly 20/20, people, and I preferred a comfy outfit over the prospect of a relationship. I know. This is killing me, too.

Upon arriving at our destination and spotting her boyfriend’s best friend—who we were going to be staying with—I realized my fashion faux pas. There I was, standing in front of a hunk of burning love, dressed like a wet-rat-slash-teenybopper sans concealer.

Oh. The. HORROR.

Long story short, I ditched the velour, and our long-distance relationship began that very night. Even cooler, we discovered that we were from rival towns 15 minutes away from each other, which makes going home for the holidays incredibly easy. We’re lucky, we know.

The Jams one week into dating:

And the Jams almost five years into dating, about six months ’til the wedding:

Oh, how I loves me some Mister Jam. And you know what’s so cool? Literally just days ago, we got an amazing call: the couple who inadvertently hooked us up is now engaged! Let the double wedding bells ring!

So what about you guys out there? Anybody else get dragged out of bed to meet their soulmate? Did friends introduce you without the intention of you falling in love? Spill your strange meet-up stories—I’m aching to hear the deets!

Totally unrelated, but I had to say that if I could make my curls even remotely as awesome as yours, I’d stop straightening them out every time I wash my hair. Curly girl power! Or something.

What a cute story! I seem to always meet hot guys when I look my worst… However, I was prepared when I met Mr Frenchie since we met online and I knew about our scheduled date ;-)

My fiance and I were both tricked into meeting eachother! We both had been in not so happy relationships and our best friends were engaged! One night they called us both up and invited us out to the “big city.” lol. We had no idea the wanted us to see that there were other fish in the sea. Lucky for us, we fell in love. And lived basically right next door. lol. :)

I LOVE good stories like that! This is the story of my fiance and I: I was living with my boyfriend at the time (unhappily). My friend Katy asked me to go with her to a music festival. She said her sister and brother in law were going and she had an extra ticket. I said absolutely!

Well two days later she called me and said she had made a mistake. While she was offering me the extra ticket, her brother in law was offering Mr. Fish the extra ticket. So we all decided to go and just be one ticket short. So Mr. Fish kindly offered for me to take the ticket to the festival when we were there and he just rolled with the punches and hung out till it was over.

We had such a fun night! I thought to myself how wonderful Mr. Fish was and figured that even if nothing ever happened with us, it restored my faith in finding wonderful men. Within a month I convinced a friend to move by me so I could move out of my boyfriends home. Months later we decided to give it a shot and over 5 years later, I’m so thankful I listened to my gut feeling about Mr. Fish!

My story is so similar to yours - my college floormate dragged me out after a really long day of Ultimate Frisbee (it was a 6 hour tournament 2 hours away) to go hang out with this cute guy she liked and his friends! Seven years later, said cute guy and I are married. But yeah, I was totally not in the mood to meet people and didn’t even think I might be meeting somebody. So I feel you. But then at least you know it’s real…

I too got dragged out of the house to meet my FH, but that’s where our similarities end. I had just been dumped by my best friend and the boy that I thought I was going to marry the week before and my friends were trying to cheer me up. To them cheering me up meant getting me wasted :) At the last bar of the night, I was standing next to a ‘table’ talking to my friend when I realized that I was standing insanely close to a person! I turned to apologize and there was Mr. Smith, who said “that’s ok, I’ve been trying to think of something to say to you all night”! And with that i was smitten and 7 years later I am the soon to be Mrs. Hyphensmith!

I met my hubby on match.com. He persisted in writing for four months before I finally agreed to meet him. When I did agree - it was just supposed to be for a drink so he’d finally go away….

love your story! I also was not looking my best when I met Mr. Charcole - we met playing kickball! needless to say, I was a sweaty, dirty, no makeup-and-hair in a ponytail mess - but I think the fact he still thought I was hot even looking like that is so great. =) I’m sure Mr. Jam loved your J.Lo velour sweats!

Loving the story and the curls! My fiance and I had an interesting beginning as well. You see for quite awhile, I simply refused to meet him. We had a mutual friend, who of course just knew we’d be perfect together. I had just graduated high school and was getting ready to move away for college, the last thing I wanted was to try and start dating anyone. After some severe arm twisting, I gave in, and am thankful everyday that I did. We were inseperable from that point forward!!!
