Whether the Weather

December 8th, 2010 @ 5:42 pm by Ms. Sloth

I always said that I’d never plan an outdoor wedding because I didn’t want to be at the mercy of Mother Nature.

And then, when we started researching venues online, none of the indoor ones felt right for our wedding. We didn’t want to get married in a hotel, or a country club, or a banquet hall. We wanted to get married on the grass, under the sky.

And so it shall be. We are getting married here:

And we’re partying it up here:

And we’re worried about rain, even though rain makes for some breathtaking wedding photos.

These photos are gorg, but I’d rather have sunny skies and miss out on the umbrella pics. But there ain’t nuthin’ we can do about it.

Luckily, our venue comes with a contingency plan, for the ceremony, at least: Bartram’s Garden has a barn. It’s not a real barn, but they call it the barn. Here’s the outside:

And the interior:

I actually freaking LOVE the barn. It’s so rustic and charming. If it were big enough, I’d want to hold the reception in there, but it’s too small for a sitdown dinner. Maybe we’ll do cocktails in there. Maybe we’ll have the guestbook and fauxtobooth in there. We’ve got to do something in there because it rocks. And if it rains, we’ll have the ceremony in there, and it’ll be just fine.

As far as the reception goes, we’ll be renting a tent from our venue’s rental company.

We were planning on doing this anyway. Unless the rains are a torrential downpour, I think we’ll be OK. And if the forecast calls for really heavy rains, we’ll just have the rental company put the sides on the tent. Easy peasy.

So there you go. We’ve got it covered, in case it rains.

(But it better not rain.)

Are you having an outdoor wedding? Do you have an inclement-weather contingency plan?

We’re getting married on the beach in January! :) Unfortunately we do not have a back-up plan, so we’ll either wait it our or it looks like umbrella’s are going to be our best friends!

That barn is awesome! Too bad it’s too small for the reception.

I am with Mrs. Glasses on this one: “Plan B is there is no plan B”. Don’t know why I’m not worried about my outdoor ceremony, living in a tropical island and all, right when summer is about to begin. Worst case scenario I guess we’ll take the guests into the cocktail area and get married there. No biggie (hopefully!).

We have a back-up plan, but it leaves a lot to be desired, depending on how many of the 78 invitees actually attend.

The wedding is at my mom’s house. If the weather’s nice, the ceremony will be in the backyard, and the reception will spill from the first floor of the house, out onto the deck, and down into the backyard. Basically, I envision the wedding as a summer evening garden party.

If the weather is NOT nice, we will all be crammed into the house, and we’ll get married in front of the fireplace. (The backyard is sloped in several places, making it impossible to set up a tent.) It will be…cozy. They have a fairly spacious first floor with an open layout, so it wouldn’t be toooo bad…but it wouldn’t be great.

I hope it doesn’t rain! From someone who planned an outdoor wedding and had torrential downpours all day, it really really sucks, to be honest…So fingers crossed for you that it will be a nice day!

I was gonna say, your reception space would look gorgeous with a marquee. And the interior of the barn is pretty awesome too. Always smart to have a back up plan ;D

No rain for outdoor June weddings! That’s my rule. Whoever is in charge of weather needs to take heed.

This past June, on our future wedding date, the weather was beautiful & 80 degrees. I looked up at the sky and pleaded, “Just like this please?” Norainnorainnorain!

Very, very pretty! We’re planning an outdoor ceremony & indoor reception, but if it’s raining, we’re just going to have the ceremony inside while guests are sitting at their reception tables. Clearly it wouldn’t be ideal, and clearly it’s not as cool as that barn (which is uber-charming), but at least everyone will be dry ; )

Like Miss Jam, we’re also doing outdoor ceremony and indoor reception, though the ceremony could easily be moved inside. My worry is less about rain (which would obviously require a move) and more about cold weather. I’ve wanted to get married outside in that very spot since forever, and if it’s 50 degrees, my guests will all think I’m a bridezilla for holding it out there. So here’s hoping for 70 and sunny!

Oh man I’m nervous about this too! We’re planning an outdoor wedding and reception in Vancouver, which as I’m sure you’ve heard, is a very rainy place. We’re getting a tent and hoping for the best. I just want my guests to be comfortable

That barn is adorable!! Too bad it isn’t big enough for the reception

oh yeah - fingers majorly crossed! we are planning an outdoor ceremony AND reception, but luckily our venue also has a country club/plantation house that we can use as a backup plan in case the weather is terrible. it’s fine, but I really really like the outdoor option a LOT better so fingers crossed!

Sloth, as an ol’ Philly girl myself, I love your delightful, charming garden venue. I can’t believe I have never been there (ok - the neighborhood is a bit off-putting) but you’d better believe that I’ll be heading over there on my next trip “home.” My daughter’s wedding was the last week in November. The ceremony & cocktail hour were planned for outside (while dinner & dancing were inside). We held our breath all month, but in the end, it was glorious & I wish you the same! <3

Yes, we are planning an outdoor ceremony too and I HATE the plan B, which I know is asking for trouble! REALLY just hoping for sunny skies, like you. Your venue ROCKS>I love plan A & B :)

I’m a Philly Bride too, except I’m not a bride yet. I’m not engaged yet, either…hmmm..but I check the Bartram’s Garden website at least once a week b/c I ‘d love to get married there. I worry about a rainy day constantly, but you made me feel better about a rainy day wedding should it happen…you know, once I’m engaged, and getting married ;)
