Amid an Ice Storm, He Proposes

December 8th, 2010 @ 1:47 pm by Mrs. Jam

’Tis true, hive. Mr. Jam proposed on the coldest, rainiest, iciest, most miserable—and memorable—evening in recent Chicago-weather-related memory…outside.

Here’s a shocker: We weren’t dressed for the occasion.

Amid an Ice Storm, He Proposes : wedding chicago proposal Jam1

One hot second after he popped the question

Thank you, Chicago winter, for our soaking wet hair and clothes. Terrifying.

Let me explain…

Mr. Jam and I had been aching to go to the famed Christkindlmarket in Chicago with the sole intention of chugging hot chocolate and buying hoards of handmade Christmas ornaments. Living, oh, 15 minutes away from it, we stopped talking about going and finally made plans to meet there after work last December 23rd.

Yes, it was totally An Affair to Remember style.

Unfortunately, the weather decided that was a perfect night to throw ice, rain, wind gusts, sloppy snow, and various other unknown forms of precipitation straight into the faces of all who ventured outside. Lucky for us, the Christkindlmarket is outdoors.

I decided to call Mr. Jam before I left work and tell him that I’d make him instant hot chocolate in the comfort of our house whilst snuggled up to the pets IF it meant we didn’t have to go anymore. He bribed me with dinner. I was hungry.

After eating at one of my favorite restaurants and flying through the market, Mr. Jam thought it would be wise to brave the hideous weather and walk back to his car. I threw a fit and tried to hail a cab, but we were positively soaked to the core by that point…what’s a few more minutes?

And so we walked sloshed.

We found ourselves taking a detour through Grant Park, only to find it chillingly silent and gorgeous with the view of the beloved skyline and us surrounded by falling snow. I slipped on ice, Mr. Jam helped me up, and then he pulled out a ring…

Amid an Ice Storm, He Proposes : wedding chicago proposal 20937 601 And yes, his knee was so cold it was numb. What a trooper.

Both of us completely blacked out from that point forward and don’t remember a single sweet word that he said. I was a blubbering mess, he was a nervous wreck, and our warm fuzzies masked the freezing cold…it was just a completely perfect proposal in completely imperfect weather.

So let’s chat proposals! Did anyone else get smacked in the face with ice and rain during the big moment? I know there have to be some imperfect yet totally righteous proposal stories out there. Do share!

Mr. Grape proposed on 12.21.08. It was within the comfort of my grandma’s house, but it was still freezing cold outside! I knew the proposal was coming because we’d discussed it, but when he finally formally proposed, he looked and sounded so serious that I totally cracked up…and tipped over on the couch, smacking my head on the Xbox controller. So romantic! ;P

Chicago in winter is indeed dismal, but beautiful. Question: Why’s it so cold in the Midwest?!

ah, the magic and madness of the snow. imperfect proposals are the ones i always remember…and while we weren’t in the midst of an ice storm, i was sleepy, mildly hungover and in my jammies - in bed!

We got engaged outside, on the beach by a lighthouse where we had our first date, during a Nor’easter last year…. We barely got out of the car, walked 10 feet down the beach, I turned around, and he was on his knee, proposing while being pelted with rain. Luckily for him, I was pretty quick with my answer and we got back in the car to avoid being blown away!

aww, cute story. we had perfectly fine weather and no major mishaps, although apparently I forgot to, you know, actually say “yes”! about 3 minutes after the shrieking, kissing and hugging, he stops, looks at me, and goes - “wait, did you say yes?” haha.

mr. doxie had planned a perfectly planned romantic proposal, but admist a series of unfortunate events (like me accidentally locking him out of our house), he changed things at the last minute.

he ended up proposing to me at a park, overlooking the lake at sunset. we were standing outside a bike path tunnel that has a beautiful mosaic on it. the silly events continued when as he was telling me how much he loved me and was JUST about to get down on one knee…

…literally like 35 bikers came speeding through the tunnel directly between us. we both lost it giggling for like 2 minutes when he finally got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife! it was so cute and i’ll never forget the look on his face.

sounds awfully similar to my proposal story which also took place in Grant Park! But instead of being ridiculously cold it was insanely HOT- gotta love Midwest weather! All of my fiance’s plans fell through even is last ditch effort of purposing in front of the fountain (The park closed and the fountain turned off within seconds of us walking up to it) so he just did it in the dark in the park anyway! We joke about how boring our story would be if the Navy Pier fireworks hadn’t been canceled and he had gotten to do plan one!

I love a cute story like yours that doesn’t appear perfect but turns out to be absolutely perfectly you!

The weather didn’t hinder my fiance from proposing, my family actually did! He went over to their house to ask my parents for my hand in marriage (which I thought was so cute!), and ended up being over there for over 3 hours helping them fix the TV while I was waiting at home not knowing any of this!

Love it. The christmaskind… however you spell it is my and my future FI’s tradition every year that we visit. We were there thanksgiving weekend and I briefly thought how cute it would be for him to propse there! So fun and festive.
I know your bridge though and love your story. Sounds romantic and just like something that would happen to me (aka falling and being mad that I was walking in the rain/snow)

@Mrs Grape @doxie
@Violachap: Ladies, a big ol’ THANK YOU for sharing your stories & making me smile…there’s just something really sweet about the imperfect stories. And seriously, I don’t know how so many guys pull off PERFECT proposals when they’re all nervous and jittery leading up to the big moment!
@Charcole2011: Ahh, I forgot to say yes at first, too! Figured it was best to cut right to the screaming and dancing and celebrating, right?
@martL26: Oh glorious Midwestern weather…one minute it’s insta-burn heat, and the next it’s snow flung into your face. At least you had post-proposal fireworks ; )

What a cute proposal story. We actually had great weather, but the whole time prior I was wishing I was relaxing at home instead because I had no idea what he had planned.

What a great way to warm up. I bet you were blind to the cold after that! You two are cute!

I too was a victim of mid-west Chicago weather! It was just this past June when there were terrible storms and windows blew out of the Willis (eh hem, Sears) Tower. He had it all planned out — we were staying at a hotel on the River for my birthday. After dinner we were supposed to walk to the gorgeous Buckingham Fountain (where the proposal was supposed to happen). We tried to wait out the rain as long as possible so we could take our walk, but it never stopped. So we left the restaurant to head back to the hotel with the rain pouring, wind gusting, chairs blowing off terraces and he got down on one knee in the middle of all that and popped the question!
We are getting married outside in Michigan so I’m just hoping that the rain doesn’t follow with us!

My fiance proposed in front of Buckingham Fountain in Chicago (skyline= <3). He took me to my 1st Cubs game and the weather was perfect. Then we went to walk downtown and the 70 MPH winds and pouring rain came… if you remember, it was the storm that blew some windows out of Willis (Sears) Tower. But he insisted we keep heading to the fountain “since I wanted to see it.” We were soaking wet, but it couldn’t have been a more perfect proposal :)
