Acne Update: The Vanishing Act

December 9th, 2010 @ 6:08 pm by Mrs. Earrings

There is less than a month to our wedding day now, and I can now say something that I never could have said over 3 months ago when I wrote this post: My skin is completely clear.

Before I go on, I want to say that obviously everyone’s skin is different and what worked for me may not work for you, but I want to share how I got my skin to clear up almost overnight anyway, in case there is someone else out there with skin like mine who will benefit from the same regime and products.

Anyway, after I wrote that post on my acne, I had my hair and makeup trial. The lovely lady who did my trial took one look at my skin and told me that what I was using for my acne at the time was much too harsh for my sensitive skin, and that it was actually getting worse in an attempt to self-correct itself. Eeek! But she had a solution:

Avene.

Ready to try anything at that point, I started off on a regime that involved cleansing day and night with Avene Soapless Gel Cleanser:

Applying their Cleanance K lotion during the day:

And using ordinary rosehip oil at night:

It was that simple. The difference was practically immediate, much to my shock (and relief). I can truthfully say that since I started my new regime almost 3 months ago I have had a total of ZERO major breakouts, and only two very tiny ones. When summer began here I also stopped using the rosehip oil, started using the Cleanance K lotion at night instead (because it makes your skin fairly sun-sensitive), and switched to Avene Hydrance Optimale Light moisturiser during the day (mine has SPF 20):

It is a huge confidence booster to know I don’t have to worry about my skin behaving badly as the wedding day approaches. The Avene products I have used are gentle, and I feel like I am giving my skin a healthy treat every time I apply them to my face. I kept waiting for them to fail me like all the other products I have used did, but day after day I wake up and I am happy with the way my skin looks. The only reminder I have of my acne are some very faint pink marks around my chin area.

Okay, enough gushing. Just so you know—I am in no way affiliated with Avene. I just happen to use their products and get results with them. :)

Anyone else out there with super-sensitive combination skin? Have you found a skin product that has worked miracles for you?

I can totally relate! I have combination skin. Oily yet dry. I dried my skin out the past few weeks and have been trying to moisturize, because I’m getting married next week! It’s taken me a while to figure out the proper balance.

That’s awesome! Having great skin on your wedding day is so important. That being said, I tried to do a skin care regime leading up to the wedding and my skin had an allergic reaction to the new products. So my skin looked red and chapped :(

I finally went to see the dermatologist and she told me I had sensitive skin (which is why putting creams and harsh cleansers was making my skin break out more). She gave a great facewash and a cream. The cream made my skin break out so I stopped using it and only use the face wash twice a day and my skin is completely clear now! I just need the minimal scaring to go away! So glad I finally found something to work before the wedding too!

Ugh, I have combo skin. Right now I am trying to figure out how to moisturize it while not breaking out. It’s a nightmare. I am glad you found something that works for you!

i’ve got the evil combo skin, too! i still haven’t found anything that keeps me completely clear, but i have had much better results when i only wash my face at night. i use a brand called acne free, which is like proactiv, and i just use the cleanser. i use it before bed, remove it with a wet microfiber towel (it is great for getting makeup off and does some light exfoiliating. you can get them in the auto section at super stores haha), then put on a layer or two of clean and clear oil free moisturizer. in the morning, i just splash cold water on my face and put on two layers of the moisturizer. my skin hasn’t been clear since i was in elementary school, but it’s a million times better than it was since i started doing this.

I hear your pain when it comes to the evil acne and the horrible blind pimples! I spent six months on Orutane medication when I was twenty and although it cleared the acne I was left with hyperpigmentation and brown patches all over my face from where my skin flaked off :-(

These days I have good success using Cetaphil cleanser and Sun Sense Daily Face Matt Skin moisturiser - it’s a sunscreen with a very slight tint. I find the Sun Sense cream really good cos it has awesome SPF but it’s really light and not gluggy at all. I really don’t put anything else on my skin apart from mineral foundation and a wee bit of BioOil on some scars.

I have a friend who uses Dermalogica products and I can’t believe how expensive they are!

@ Miss Earrings, are you getting married in NZ?

I’m googling these products as I type. I’ve really been struggling with my skin lately, and am desperate for some type of miracle. So far nothing has really worked, even after a couple different dermatologist :(

That’s wonderful that you’ve found something that works for you!
I’ve dealt with acne all my life and about three months ago I finally went to the dermatologist and said: fix it! He put me on some medication and my skin is getting a lot better. I wish I could have found a commercial product like you did, but I’m pretty okay with whatever lets me have clear skin on my wedding day!

That sounds amazing, maybe I’ll try your regimen too!! Miss Earrings, do you also still use the doxycyline that you mentioned in your previous post? I wonder if I might need both!

@LotusLove: Yes, I used that for 2 months :) I think it did help, tho I seem to be slightly resistant to doxycycline for some reason. I stopped using it a month ago because NZ’s summer sun is so harsh!

I found the doxy only worked while I took it and did you know that they also perscribe Doxy to deal with Malaria?!

Not super sensitive, but definitely combination, and I have tried everything out there that they say is supposed to be miracle stuff (I’ve never heard of this product and will def check it out!) but nothing EVER worked. By random chance, my bridesmaid gave me a spare bottle of this clinique moisture spray. All it is is aloe water! See, I found out my skin produces lots of oil because it’s overcompensating because my skin was super dry! It was so counterintuitive, but my skin felt super oily, so I never moisturized! But when I started using the clinique moisture spray (literally just a few spritzes morning and night) and washed my face normally in the shower with whatever products I usually use, just like you, I immediately noticed a difference. My skin is soft, NOT oily, and I haven’t had a major pimple in weeks!! Like you said, I am so relieved I found something, and in my case, a very simple something, that means I don’t have to worry about a breakout right before my wedding day!!

This is so funny, I’ve got a draft of a post going about how I switched to Avene after getting engaged, because I didn’t want red-and-angry forehead in wedding photos!
I’m a convert too!

Thanks for this! I will recommend them to my sister. She uses pretty harsh stuff for her acne that works but it’s too tough on her sensitive skin. Did you say that the rosehip oil made your skin sun sensitive? How?

I picked up Avene’s sensitive skin moisturizer while in France this summer, because I had forgotten mine, and I loved it! I am so happy to hear of other people having good luck with this line, because I am thinking about spending some serious cash getting a few other products from them. They are expensive here in the US compared to France, but at least there are places to get it, and I am probably going to bite the bullet and just spend the money. But next time I am in France (my girlfriend is French and has family there!) you better believe I’ll be stocking up! :)

I had acne problems too until I tried Burt’s Bee facial cleanser. It is much more gentle on my skin!
