Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Fluffy Thoughts

My heart melts at the sight of this photo…

Check out that brooch! Isn’t she pretty? I love love love this cake. It’s gorgeous and it’s what I want ours to look like. Exactly. Well, except the flowers on top. I don’t think we need them.

If we can’t have that cake, I’ll settle for one like any of these:

I love intricate designs, swirls and pretty patterns.

They’re complex and beautiful…like I am. :) Haha.

I gathered a lot inspiration from Mrs. Button’s cake. It’s so perfectly gorgeous, no?

Now I know you’re probably wondering where the butterfly decor is, being that I’m a butterfly fanatic. I considered adding butterflies, but I’ve seen that design everywhere, and I want something different.

If we do use butterflies, I still want texture like this:

This one has pretty textures, too:

This one has the textured look, as well…

I don’t know why I love it so much, but I do!

Remember my first cake post?

I can’t leave out cakes with artwork, because I like these, too:

These are pretty, but I would probably opt for a different color palette. There’s no doubt black, white, and pink is beautiful, though. I’m sure the wedding these cakes belong to was show-stopping!

I’ll end it the way I started out with my very favorite design, the complex and beautiful:

I am excited to send these images over to our caterer and see what they can do! I hope they don’t say the intricate designs are impossible. Do you know if fancy designs can only be done with fondant (because we were really looking forward to buttercream!)?

I’ll keep you posted.

Which of these cakes do you love most?

If you have a good baker, they can work miracles with both. We fiund someone on Craigslist after I posted looking for someone to duplicate a design I saw and couldn’t afford ($1500. plus the cost to have it flown in from SanFrancisco). She said she’d hadn’t done blown sugar bubbles since pastry school, but would buy the equipment and practice. Ugh. We took a chance and the cake was marvelous! (Plus, it tasted great). Make sure you ask to see samples of things they’ve done…bakers don’t seem to be created equally. :)

Sorry for the typos….I like the last one! (It looks expensive. FYI…the more intricate and elaborate, the more it costs.)

The black and white one was the inspiration for our wedding cake. It really looked a lot like it (except with wider and shorter layers) and was done with buttercream. I can get you a pic if interested! Good luck, you have a tough decision with all this beautiful inspiration!

Interestingly, the last one you posted is buttercream and not fondant. Because fondant is so thick and dough-like, you can’t make it do sharp edges like that last cake. #3 and #5 are also buttercream (#5 just has fondant snakes; very easy to do… maybe not so easy to get them to stay put though). The first one though, the one your heart melts at, that one is fondant with what looks to be buttercream/royal icing stenciling. That might not be so expensive because it didn’t take too much skill to cover the cakes in fondant and then plop a stencil over the fondant and spread the icing on.

A good baker could make most of these designs from buttercream. Fondant is great for a smooth even look but smooth can be achieved with buttercream and skills. The only things that wouldn’t really be possible are butterflies and some of the chunkier designs.

I hope you end up using butterflies on your cake, I think that would be so beautiful and perfect for you!

I think it all depends on the baker…our cake was all buttercream (with the exception of fondant bands and gumpaste flowers) I think they ended up doing a really great job too.

I showed a very similar inspiration pic of cake#5 to our cake shop….with one major change in mind: no fondant! It can be done! Our baker is going to use buttercream to make similar texture, and do just the flowers with fondant. I can’t wait to see how it comes out!

What a great bunch of cake inspiration photos! I saved several for myself, and I like the third one followed by the last one the most.

These are absolutely gorgeous. The last one reminds me of the inspiration that Mrs Perfume had hoped her wedding cake would resemble!
