About Ms. Sloth

Oh, Bolero!

December 9th, 2010 @ 11:18 am by Ms. Sloth

When I first started the long, arduous task of trying to find a wedding dress, I was 100% anti-strapless. I wanted a sleeveless v-neck dress or maybe something with cap sleeves. Unfortunately, the dresses that looked best on my body were strapless. I finally found a dress I loved, and that was that.

But it was still strapless. And I’m just not a fan of my arms. Even when I was at my healthiest weight, my upper arms looked thick and heavy. They’re not terrible, but I’m insecure about them, and I don’t like the idea of them being exposed throughout the entire day.

There’s also that pesky tattoo that I still haven’t dealt with. Sigh.

The solution seemed obvious: I needed to find something to cover my shoulders.

Originally, after seeing some photos of fabulous brides wearing cardigans, I wanted to do the same:

Adorable, no? Unfortunately, I have my heart set on wearing my bright pink shoes, and I think that a bright cardigan would look silly. What to do?

Luckily for me, Mrs. Thimble came to the rescue and inspired me. Check out some of the non-pro pics she posted here on the ’bee:

That’s it! I need a flirty, romantic, vintage-inspired bolero. And I could only imagine one place that I’d find it…

Etsy. Obvs.

Seller MaryAndAngelika had a gorgeous lace bolero for a great price, and they were willing to custom make it in my size!

Problem solved! My arms will be covered, and I’ve got a soft, vintage-inspired and romantic accessory to make my dress even more special.

Are you planning on wearing a bolero, shrug, or cardigan over your wedding dress?

I was in the *exact* same situation. The dress I bought comes with a lace bolero, but I love yours!

SO pretty, I’m very tempted to steal this idea from you :3. I’m also wearing a Galina; I love the one you ended up with! Wish it came in full length as well as tea length.

That is gorgeous! I’ve been struggling on what to wear to our winter wedding. I can’t stand outside in my strapless! Right now I have 4 different options (yes, I’ve purchased all four so I can try them on with my dress, I will have a lot of returns after the wedding!). A vintage fur stole, a fur bolero, a sequin jacket (found it at forever 21!) or a cardigan. Decisions, decisions!! I love your choice though! I will have to look her up on etsy :-)

Love that look!!

I am wearing a bolero also. It actually is a matching jacket for a different dress. I tried it on while I was in the store to get a ‘feel’ of what a bolero would look like, since I too did not want to be strapless. It ended up looking very nice with my dress so I decided to order it!

Lovely! My dress came with a lacey bolero, but mine looked too busy with my already busy dress so I never wore it (I got a large ivory pashmina to keep warm instead). I loved Thimble’s bolero, and can’t wait to see yours with your dress!

Beautiful choice!! I the look of a bolero (they’re pretty standard for Jewish weddings, since you’re supposed to have your shoulders covered.)

A lace bolero? Now that’s something you don’t see everyday. So pretty!

That is a beautiful bolero! Just gorgeous. I’m kinda wondering if your tattoo will show through?

BTW, that second mustard cardigan picture has been haunting me forever. It’s in in my inspiration board, but I just can’t tell what it is about it that inspires me so. Is it the pearls, the textured bouquet, the hair flower or the sweetheart neck (check, check, check and check!)? Thanks for helping me figure out that what is taking that look to another -oh, so very rocking- level is in fact the cardigan! How awesome would it be to AT LEAST wear it in my signature (raspberry!) color when leaving the party? Most work on this newly planned CHECK now!!!

So cute! I would love to wear one, but my dress is lace and I think it might detract from the pattern.

OMG!!! I was favorited that one and was going to buy it and then noticed it was gone! Now I know who did it! It was you! Ha. That’s ok. I found another one that they sell that I love.
