DIY Words (Ring Exchange)

December 10th, 2010 @ 11:07 am by Mrs. Prairie Dog

I’ve searched the world over for wedding-day readings. I have read all umpteen pages over at Indie Bride. Most of the common wedding passages are just not our style, so…I wrote a few of my own.

I don’t know why I did this. Actually, I take that back. I know why I did it, but I don’t know why I’m sharing these on the Internet. I guess as a way to show you all that you can DIY your ceremony too. If there’s no reading that fits you…make one!

So, here is my first go at a reading for the ring exchange. I focused on what the ring meant to me—in one way, it means very little. It’s just a material object. But what it symbolizes means everything to me. Then I made it rhyme because I was feeling crazy.

the circle sonnet

this ring is just a metaphor,
[endlessness, infinity]
they’ll know my love belongs to you,
and yours belongs to me.

this ring is just a thing you see,
not magic or pine.
but this ring? it is your signature,
and my heart is the line.

this ring is just a symbol,
a way to leave your mark.
but this ring? it’s your initials,
and my heart is the bark.

it’s just a piece of metal,
to be stolen, lost or bent.
but this ring? it is your handprint.
my heart is wet cement.

Kindly note that my choice to not capitalize anything is not stylistic or a nod to ee cummings. It is what the French poets call lazy avec la shift key.

Do you think you’d try writing your own reading?

(Also…is this a lame thing to blog about? It’s OK if it is. Just tell me so I don’t keep doing it.)

Great job and what a great way to make the ceremony all your own. =)

I’ve been thinking about writing my own reading, but afraid of where to start. I have time to start playing with it!

At first I thought it would be really cheezy and lame… so I read it to my betrothed expecting we would laugh together.

When I got to the end, we both looked at each other and Awww-ed.

It’s beautiful and touching. Well done.
