Sometimes, People Surprise You

December 10th, 2010 @ 3:59 pm by Ms. Sloth

Mrs. Octopus had it right. People are weird about weddings.

I didn’t intend for this to be a negative or complaining post, so I’ll just say that I’ve been really surprised and disappointed in the attitudes we’ve gotten from a few people who are very close to us since we’ve gotten engaged. People are weird about weddings, indeed. And I’ll leave it at that.

But sometimes, people surprise you in a good way. And I was pleasantly surprised and touched over the weekend.

See, I had lunch with my little brother, who is thirteen years younger than I am. He’s actually my half-brother and was four years old when our dad died. Although he’s fairly local, I don’t see him as often as I wish, and while we get along great and love each other, we’re not super close.

He’s a senior in college and he’s a total bro, a dude. He likes partying, sports, and girls, and that’s it. He’s a good guy, but I think his Facebook photos sum up his personality perfectly:

This is not a serious kid.

So, when we were at lunch, he was telling me about how excited he was to graduate in May. And suddenly, I realized: crap. The wedding is in May.

I asked him when his graduation was because I’d be really bummed if he had to miss the wedding and if I had to miss his graduation. He said he didn’t know, but without skipping a beat, he said, “Well, if it’s the same day as your wedding, I’ll just skip graduation.”

Whoa. I was shocked and touched. I used my phone to look up his graduation date, and luckily, it’s the week before the wedding.

Then, a few minutes later, he asked me if he’d be invited with a date.

Uh oh. He’d just finished telling me about how he had a handful of girlfriends (he’s a player, my little bro), and I was going to have to tell him how we weren’t inviting anyone with a plus one unless it was a serious relationship. I opened my mouth to tell him this, and before I could get a word out he added, “Because I don’t really want to bring one. I’d rather just be there for you guys without having to babysit a date.”

AWW!

I can’t tell you how touched I am that my sometimes-insensitive little brother is so excited about the wedding. He really cheered me up during an emotional few days.

Did you have any friends or family members surprise you in a good way?

That’s so cute. My little brother and Dan’s little brothers were super sweet and supportive, too. Yes, people end up surprising you in both ways!

Awwww. :)
I’m sorry to hear that others haven’t been as supportive, though. :( I think a lot of people through that, and it hurts.

That is sweet of your brother. My sister got married the same year I graduated and I was a bit annoyed to be honest.

My little brother sounds just like your’s! He’s turning 21 in three days and is into sports, girls and is the president of his fraternity. I hope he’s as serious and excited about our wedding in April as your brother is! Very cute story!

That is super sweet! Also, we booked our May wedding date, and then remembered that the best man AND a groomsman will be graduating from college…but they both happened to be the week before. Phew!

Aww what a sweet guy. Your story actually brought back memories of a time when I actually had to chose between being a bridesmaid in my cousin’s wedding or going to my high school graduation. It was originally scheduled a week a part, but with snow days and graduation day weather, they happened to fall on the same day.

It sucked having to chose. And after a long long conversation with my cousin, I chose my graduation. Looking back on it now, I totally regret my decision. I felt at the time that I had worked very hard to graduate top in my class and I wanted to be there for the moment of “this is my accomplishment”.

Fortunately now, many many years later.. my cousin and I are very close. And I’m hoping we don’t have the reverse of our situation for our wedding!
