Mrs. Giraffe's Picture
Mrs. Giraffe, Chicago Age and Occupation: 23, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Music Student Teacher Engagement Date: October 23, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Trinity Lutheran Church & Idlewild Country Club About Me: Coming from the suburbs of the Windy City, you'll often find me with my foot in my mouth while laughing for no reason or telling bad knock knock jokes. I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!
About Mrs. Giraffe

We last left off here, where I had made a million magnet designs for our save the dates. My inability to make decision was biting me in the butt, ;) but we had finally made a decision to go with this guy.

DIY Save the Dates: A Magnet Decision : wedding chicago diy save the dates Std 1201

Mr. G liked it when I emailed it to him, but then when we were hanging out the next night and looking over all the previous designs, he stopped out of nowhere, and asked, “Why don’t we use one with my guitar?”

I reined in my inner crazy that was threatening to rear its ugly head because I had designed for six hours the day before and asked, “What?”

Mr. G just went on saying, “My guitar. It’s our thing.”

Okay, I guess it seems like my fiance, the classical guitarist, would have his guitar be his thing, but looking back, maybe it was both of our things. I mean, the night I met Mr. G was also the night I fell in love with him, and what was he doing? Well, he came up to the floor of my dorm and played his guitar for three hours. I mean, most nights in college were spent with me working on art projects while Mr. G practiced his music. I get that, and I actually thought it was pretty sweet of Mr. G to want to include it on our STD.

Knowing I wanted to use the pic of us with Mr. G’s guitar, I looked back over the other designs. Something wasn’t right with any of them so I went back and looked at the inspiration photos I posted. It was like a super bolt of inspiration. I loved STDs that include calendars! Whoo!

So, based a little off the STD at the top of this post, this STD came next.

DIY Save the Dates: A Magnet Decision : wedding chicago diy save the dates Std1 I think by looking at that one, you can definitely tell I didn’t know what direction I was going in. I tried to rein it in a little bit with the next one.

DIY Save the Dates: A Magnet Decision : wedding chicago diy save the dates Std2 I didn’t like the giant calendar in that one, so I broke it up a little bit.

DIY Save the Dates: A Magnet Decision : wedding chicago diy save the dates Std3 That was FINALLY starting to feel right! I just had to swap the position of some things.

DIY Save the Dates: A Magnet Decision : wedding chicago diy save the dates Std4 There! I kind of loved this one. The typefaces fit, the colors were right, the layout felt good! For some reason though, I decided to change the photo. I wanted one that looked a little more candid and a little less pose-y (although I do adore all our e pics!).

DIY Save the Dates: A Magnet Decision : wedding chicago diy save the dates Std6 Double there! One of my ultimate favorite epics? Check! See, I loved this design so much and I was so happy with it and it made me all warm in fuzzy inside. I was sure this was it…but, the more I looked at it, the more I was distracted by all the stuff going on in the background of our picture. No worries though, it was nothing a little Photoshop couldn’t fix.

DIY Save the Dates: A Magnet Decision : wedding chicago diy save the dates Std5 There it is folks (finally)! I love it! I am so happy with how it turned out, and it was totally worth all the time and effort.

But wait, there’s more! Up next: What to do with that magnet…

Anybody else’s fiances weigh in on their STD designs?

I like all of them! You are definitely a Photoshop pro–very cool!
My FI was actually way more vocal about our STDs than I would have thought–we eventually went w/ the design/colors I wanted and the picture of us that he liked best. It’s so fun to go to people’s houses and see your creation on their fridge!

oh i actually like the first one way better!! you never should have let him make you second guess, cuz that one is totally unique, the personalized shoes are awesome, and the tie in to “dancing shoes” is great!! go back to the original!

My fiance designed our STD postcards, after much agonizing by me of which pictures to use. He has a better eye for design than I do, so I let him take charge on this one.

He didn’t have too many comments on the STD but the invitations he has been surprisingly opinionated about. I’ve learned to stop asking him questions because he keeps saying the opposite of me lol

That is lovely! Including the guitar was a good choice. Same thing here re: FI and save-the-dates…I had ours all designed and was congratulating myself with much wine when FI called to weigh in…new wording, new font…AH! But, the end product was definitely an improvement, and even more so that is was a collaborative effort.
Also, I just realized we’re date twins! Holla!!

Love the way they turned out, you’re so talented!

And my FH does that ALL the time, taking one look at a finished project (that I’ve spent foreverrrr toiling over) and wanting something else. It’s SO frustrating… but admittedly he’s usually right and the revised project ends up being better. ;)

Awww, I love it! And you can see your faces much more clearly :D The guitar is so adorable, I form a little story around it about him serenading you on the beach.
